I bought a book there and was signed up for some $9.95/month membership with out my permission. I did not agree to this fee and the confirmation email comes from an unrelated address so you don't see it (memberservices@bestbrandsvalue.com). They are purposly signing customers up for this membership without permission and When I called about the 4 months of charges they would only refund 2 months.
Do not make purchases from this company.and if you already did & got charged call to get the charges removed 866-707-5858 then make a complaint:

I purchased a book on Dec 20, 2010 for $19.53 which was charged to my card, but it did not stop there, my card was charged $9.95/mth for a period of 8 mths. This company is a total rip-off.
I just realized that discountbooksale has been billing me $9.95 per month since September 2010 when I ordered a book. I called the BBV customer service number and the rep said it was a monthly membership, which I would never had agreed to if it were obvious on the web site - the rep said the web site has been changed consequently, so I cannot view the original at the time I ordered. BBV has agreed to cancel my mebership and refund 2 months of charges. I have filed a complaint with the BBB of Southeast Florida and am persuing a complete refund. I have also notified my cc company and requested support. I wish I had "Googled" this company before dealing with them - there are numerous complaints regarding this situation I am in.
they billed you per month but didn't send you some kind of email confirmation every month saying it was billed? i would say that's pretty shady.
Thank you for this! I buy and sell a lot of books and I would have lost my mind to have found myself in this situation after making just one purchase. I will be sure I spread the word in the bookselling community. I do see all the other complaints on Google. Definetely follow up with the BBB, every time. Great post!
Never did business with this company, but somehow they stole my credit card information and started charging me $9.95 per month for some subscription. I am not even in their system. I filed a complaint with the BBB in Florida, here is the info about the BBB that handles this and the company info with owner and E-mail address:

File a complaint with the BBB, contact your bank and authorities if you have experienced the same.
did you change your credit card number? there are other places to report these guys, if you're mad enough. the FTC is doing their best to try to crack down on businesses like this: http://www.sitejabber.com/consumer-information/how-to-report-online-fraud-and-scams
To John and Tran
Has anyone contacted Amazon and Shopzilla about their doing business and promoting these scammers? If we all start complaining to those that help DBS promote their scam, it may have a better result than the BBB. Also, most local newspapers and many Attys General offices will post notice of scammers. Collectively, these crooks are making millions while all we do is complain to each other.
i tend to agree, though a lot of people still rely on the BBB.
Thank you for the good information. I also got ripped off for 8 months of membership purchasing a $4.00 book. They would only refund two months, so the ripped me for $59.60. We need to find a way of putting this company out of business. I will file a complaint with BBB, and will pursue this with the credit card company. They become co-conspirators-after-the-fact if they do nothing about it.-
I purchased a book for $11 and they have been billing me for the last six months around $10 every month! This is a scam. Do I call the BBB? An attorney? How do we shut this site down? Talk about deceit. I'm gonna pray...ask God to intervene...don't know what that looks like, but it will be just.
were you able to get your bank or credit card to reverse the charge?
Apparently not a scam, judging from the many, many reports about this one. The membership condition is somewhere in the tiny print, and people who purchase are automatically agreeing to the membership terms that they didn't read. This isn't the only business working the same way. And the technique works, especially targeting two groups: the elderly, who either can't or don't read the small print because they're too trusting, and impulse buyers who don't take that extra few hours to read the terms very carefully.
In both cases, it's implied that consumers can and will trust the company to put their customers' interests first, but the bottom line is that you can't trust a contract without reading it carefully first. Unless you see, specifically, that you are guaranteed no further charges ever and that your credit card details will not be kept or used, don't assume that's true. Look very carefully at any boxes that you are asked to tick or untick. Sometimes, just ignoring a tick box is bad enough; the accompanying condition may state that you agree to handing over your money if you DON'T tick the box, while most people expect the opposite so they don't tick the box. Not a scam, just clever retail psychology which tells the business that people don't read the small print and can be mislead by implication, without that being actually illegal.
The short answer: cancel the card you used. Any way you can. Report it lost or stolen if you like, or tell the bank what's happened, but cancel the card so that the number is no longer valid. If the company writes to you asking for a new number, ignore them. Companies which do this stuff don't usually bother any further, because it's costly for them and they don't need the publicity.
excellent advice, Chris!
Thanks Tran and Chris...the company credited two months back and said they sent an e-mail when I bought the book that I was now a member...when I told them I did not get an e-mail she said it was probably in my spam folder...that is when i figured out the e-mail they sent saying i was a member they knew would probably go to my spam folder and never be seen or read. I have made complaint to the BBB since they have a B rating with the BBB...looks like not too many people have filed a complaint. They are called Smart Savings Center...yep, they are saving a lot of money earned deceitfully. Will try to remember to let you two know what happens with the BBB...they have contacted them. Blessings!
I contacted the Florida BBB. They responded and kept me informed but in the end said that DiscountBookSale.com told them that I knew what I was getting into. This company makes their real money by tricking people into a monthly fee (typically $9.95.). They are dishonest but they must be good at what they do. They stay in business. I think the only way to put them out of business is through a class action suite. The problem is that no one person has a big enough loss to make it worth while to take on a significant project like that.
If I walk into Target to buy a bag of diapers and have a toddler screaming next to me, I do NOT have a few hours to read the contract terms before the cashier swipes my card. Anytime you use "retail psychology" to get people's money, it's sleazy. Discount Book Sales' tactics are much more than putting candy at the checkout lines. And just because it's legal doesn't mean it's not scammy. Business interactions should be based on trust, not some underhanded method to get your money without you knowing it. What kind of society would it if all businesses operated "legally" under this principle?

This is the biggest scam i have ever encountered in my life, a book that cost me $11.83 has now cost me $201.13, i just now found out that they have been charging my creadit card since 11 -24-09. one big lesson learned for me and my wife, read the REVIEWS. I can not believe in this great nation there could be such a horrible company, i would not even think of working for a company that would do this to people, and then go home to my family and say that i am providing for them by scaming people out of there money. hope this review helps people, if they read them before hand.
wow, $11 became $201??? that's awful. are you able to recover any of those funds?
i'm sure your review will help someone.
yes they were going to send me $39 dollars but it is not over yet.
good luck!
Chad...I filed a complaint with the BBB...if you have had any success at exposing this evil will you let me know please. Thanks!
the BBB is pretty useless, i think. you should try the FTC also. here are links: http://www.sitejabber.com/consumer-information/how-to-report-online-fraud-and-scams
Thanks y'all I will let u know it's going to take some time..
The same thing has been happening to me, and I just found out that they've been charging me for 5 months. They don't even send an email telling you that they're charging your account. I'm reporting them.
I wish I read the reviews first ,I to was played the fool. You get no help on the phone and they don't answer the tickets(which is a type of e-mail)..I will never order from another company again without checking the reviews.Live,Learn and lose money.
Please file a complaint with the BBB if you haven't already.
they charged my credit card for 9.95 after i ordered a book for 5.95. they enroll you in some kind of membership if you order anything from them. i called and told them to cancel and credit my card. waiting yo see what happens. stay away from them.
Please file a complaint with the BBB if you haven't already.
Please note, the following, all "dot com" are affiliated:
DiscountBookSale, SmartSavingsCenter, BestBrandValues, HotMovieSale, DiscountPosterSale, RebateGiant, USDirectory, and Inbox.
I, too found a book on DiscountBookSales DBS). When I entered my billing info, the next page displayed a special through Smart Savings Center (SSC). I exited the page without clicking. Today I got an email saying that my 3 day trial had 1 day to go. i did call to cancel and did receive a cancellation email back from SCC. I also received an email from DBS that my book wouldn't ship to the 20th and my card wouldn't be charged until then.
I also contacted Discovercard and was informed that my "secure card number" was already authorized for the books (no problem, as I did order the books). However, Discover agreed to immediately cancel that "secure card number" so no further charges could be placed by anyone. They also said that if the card wasn't charged in 10-days, the authorization would drop off and the charge could be cancelled.
Yes, I did email DBS to cancel the order
Please file a complaint with the BBB...others are being stolen from every day. Thanks so much for all the names they use!
I bought a used paperback book from www.DiscountBookSale.com. The charge to my credit card for that book was by DBS Books. Then I get an email, welcoming me to www.BestBrandValues.com. The second page tells me it costs $19.95 per month. I never signed up for this. Three days later, a $19.95 charge appears, payable to, guess who, DBS Books. Fraud!
Please file a complaint with the BBB...they are stealing from people everyday with this scam.
Be careful!!
They charging for membership EVERY MONTH without permission!
I will NEVER order anything from this store and never recommend anybody.
They don't deserve any star at all.
this compnay is a disgrace! I bought a book for my child in Dec. They have been charging by cc $19.95 for 6 months. I called and said they will cancel my membership and refund 2 months. I replied saying I know you have been reported to the BBB and demand full 6 month refund and to speak to the manager. he said 2 minute wait. After 15 min. of waiting I hung up and received 2 emails from them. One stopping my membership and 2nd refunding 2 months. i am also going to report them to BBB.
I got bit by these guys for $9,95. I bought a book from them and they signed me up to 3 "Clubs" Discount Book Sale, Rebate Giant and Best Brand Values. I called their number 888-228-5348 to Rebate Giant and was informed of the fine print by "Rem" who is in Manila. He told me he would refund my fee and cancel my membership. He also said there were no other memberships associated with the original book transaction
I called the bank to let them know and they found a second charge. Another $9,95 to Discount Books (1-866-707-5858) I called that company and believe it or not, I got the same guy "Rem" He swore up and down that he had not misled me about no more accounts. He cancelled the Discount Books account and said I would be getting a refund in 30 to 60 days.
Tomorrow I will be going in and cancelling the credit card I used to buy that book.
The thing people need to do when contacting the company is ask specifically:
What accounts were started by the original transaction? If you don't ask, he won't tell you.
Second, how many people have been charged without their knowledge, only to be hit with an overdraft fee because they were not expecting the fee.
Good luck
I've had the same experience as a number of the consumers that
have already complained. Its a shame because being an avid reader
they lost a possibly good customer with their scams.
I was looking for a book online, with little luck, and I ran across this website. They said they had it in stock, and it was at a very low price. Well, I was pretty skeptical at first, but then a good friend of mine (whom I had asked help for in finding this book) told me he found it on Discountbooksale.com, and ordered it. So naturally, I too ordered it, thinking little of the skepticism I had.
Little did I know (and thankfully I'm a compulsive snooper into fine print), I read deep into their membership garbage, and saw that they charge a 19.99/MONTH FEE! Automatically deducted from the credit card used. A TOTAL SCAM! I found an 800 number and called them up and canceled my membership, avoiding the fee. I instructed my friend to do the same, and we were both very outraged. The person who helped me on the phone was very courteous and prompt, but I couldn't help telling him how underhanded this was. He apologized for any inconvenience, and that was that.
And the worst part of the whole story; they sent me an email telling me my book was on back order, and that it's out of print. Wasted time, money, and effort. Avoid this website at all costs.
I too was taken with this website. I ordered a book and then FIVE months later was billed (without my knowledge or consent) a membership fee. I'm glad I check my statement on a weekly basis! I called and they said they would refund it. I'm waiting to see if it goes through. I e-mail the Florida BBB about them.
I bought 1 book from BBV Discount Booksale (Boca Raton, FL) 866 707 5858 through Amazon in April 2010. Once they got my c.c. # they started charging me $19.95 every mo. I did not notice it until today 3/30/11 when I was gathering tax info from the cc statement. I called them and they would only refund 2 mos. To get back my own money for an additional mo., he told me I had to write a box # atten disputes. I have to spend the time to write and probably never hear from them? I said you owe me for 10 more months but he refused to return the money they stole from me. I called my cc company and reported them. This is not an honest way of doing business and I will never deal with them again. I hope this helps someone else avoid this scam and these totally unauthorized charges. They acted like they owned my cc # and could charge whatever they wanted to it. I gave the man a good lecture and I hope he feels guilty.
you might want to get a new card issued.
You said "I gave the man a good lecture and I hope he feels guilty" : I'm not sure he felt guilty. Today 08/26/2011 this same company took from my cc $9.95 without my permission. They have been doing this since months after I bought 2 books from them using my cc. I did not notice that they were taking monthly from my card until today.. Knowingly these are organized people to still from millions of customers all over the world.. It is a concern and something should be done to protect customers from groups like this. Don't count on them to feel guilty or ashamed..
They don't feel guilty AT ALL. I just found a $19.95 charge on my AMX card and notified AMX right away. They will stop the charges. I then called the 866# and found out they've been charging me for the past 14 months. For a KEVIN TRUDEAU book ....WOW....and all because I didn't read the fine print (that started a monthly service I never asked for). These are very organized people.
With so many complaints, its obviuos that this site scams people. I'm afraid to use my actual credit card on any website. In the past, 've always used a gift card to make purchases. There's a site that uses the same tactic as discountbooksale. I did not know at the time of purchase they would try to stick me with a $100+ bill. The offer was only for 9.95. I had 16.04 left on my gift card after they took the 9.95. They took it all, and had nerve to send a bill stating I still owed money. I never responded because I knew what I the site said the product offer was. I complained to the company I bought the gift card with. They took afee of 3.00, and 13.04 was put back on my card.
these guys are the real deal at shady practices. i'm sorry to hear you were one of the victims. good thing you had one of those gift cards though!
they sign you up for a 9.995 monthly fee, that was suposed to give you that dicounted book
I bought a book worth $8.72 and ended up being billed for $379.05 over a period of
19 months.
When I called they were only willing to refund 2 months (each month they billed me $19.95 for discount membership I've never agreed to)
I contacted my credit card co. who was able to get an extra month out of it ,so I was credited $59.85
I'm still working on it to get the rest back with my credit card co.
I also contacted Amazon, because I went to them first looking for the book.
Never do business with DBS bookstores or BBV books (same company), they are frauds!!
I also contacted the Florida BBB.
Maria O.
I thought I went to this shady site from Amazon too, but actually it was probably an Amazon ad b/c the guy at BBV Book Sales said they are not affiliated with Amazon.
umm im kinda scared now i oredered like 4 or 3 manga books i think they will come in 5 days and now i hear about all this fraud and unknown charges stuff and i was wondering what i should do if they dont get here and or if they bill me for something i didnt legally accept to buy or pay for? p.s and i've herd a few good comments but what if ther're one of the websites agents or something help me im confused
There is a "lot of this going around." I recently purchased a book for 25 cents
and got slapped with some worthless "service" I did not -- did not -- sign up for.
They said I did and I was charged for months on this. Could get a portion back
through my credit card. A website has dozens of people who had the same thing happen to them. It was for some CLUB and all I ever got was monthly bills. THUS,
I shall never ever again buy ANYTHING ON LINE@@!!!!!
This has the makings of a BIG CLASS ACTION against this
company. Someone needs to put one together. They
are shysters (crooks).
I don't understand what the deal is. It states on the site about the membership, if some people would take the time to read what they are getting themselves into. Is this the only real concern or did I miss something..??
Has anybody ever gotten a promised refund?

Thanks for the info. I made a purchase for $9.00 on 12/24. Have been charged $9.95 a month since. Besides feeling like an idiot, I am quite angry. Hopefully everyone uses your BBB info. .
a s. Just had the SAME THING happen to me!
They said they credited the 9.95 they charged, but I'll have to go back and check that it really was credited. Actually, I'm quite sure we've probably been charged this 9.95 earlier and just didn't realize it. I told her I thought this probably was not obvious on the website that we were joining some membership, and she indicated it was very obvious. BUYERS BEWARE!!!!! Thanks for the previous comments!
Sandi B. Ditto for me...I was charged for 5 months and got credited back for 3. I work too hard for my money. I should pay better attn to who hands are in MY pockets. Live and Learn. Please God let me Learn.
Gitta B. Thanks for the information~ I too was part of this scam... I called immediately and canceled my 'membership" and I wasn't even aware that I was a member of anything until I saw their charges on my credit card statement. I will also report this to the BBB. This company needs to be held accountable!
Rick K. The BBB of Southeast Florida took on my issue with DiscountBookSale, otherwise know as BestBrandValue and a few other names . The BBB kept me up to date as they proceeded but My sense is that the BBB has no real authority. DiscountBookSale responded to the BBB, saying that customers are informed of the monthly charge (I bought a $9.00 book and was charged 6 monthly fees of $9.95 each). The BBB has closed my case, against the company, as unsolved. These guys are unethical but they are good at it.
Pam P. I filed with the BBB as well...anybody have another idea? If we don't do something, thousands of others will be stolen from like we were.
lyn y. Hi , I just bought a book but thanks to your comments I contacted them immediately and cancelled otherwise I would have paid $19.95 for best brand values membership and $9.95 for rebate giant.
deepa s. The visit was useful. Content was really very informative. From http://www.ahmedabadonnet.com

Linda S. Same experience...but 19.99 per month. Customer service rep was very rude once I tried to disenroll from the "membership" I had no idea I was automatically attached to as part of the "shipping terms" per the rep. VERY DISHONEST BUSINESS PRACTICE,
desa b. brought to my attention also...for months...never bought one from them!
