“They helped me with my project”

Des R.
3/5/24

I had a project... Not me particularly, but my friend, but I was in the creative team, we were liable for different things like the scenario, decorations, and of course voice over. I checked the prices on voice overs of different projects and they stunned me for real. Here, at Voices, real professionals work and you don't need to pay much. I posted a job and a couple of voice over actors responded to me that they were ready to take the job. They got the job done perfectly! Our animations in the project looked very authentic, their intonations, emotional expressions...awesome.

“Don't use if you are from the US NO 1099 TAX form”

If you are from the US they do not allow 1099 tax forms. Just cost me money on my taxes. Go to a US company or get screwed on your taxes. They even have a tax ID on your reciept...but that means nothing. Deceptive practices.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for sharing this with us. We've spoken to the members of our finance team who helped you to get some more information.

We work with thousands of companies in the U.S., so we should be able to get this sorted out. We would recommend that you speak to your accountant about which tax forms are needed. A 1099 form is for U.S. companies only to report payments to independent contractors; as a Canadian company, it's something we receive but it's not something we can issue. The IRS number you've circled in your image is our EIN, Employer Identification Number, which we need in order to work with the U.S.

It's possible the better fit for your needs is the W-8BEN-E form, but again, your accountant would know best. Please feel free to reach back out to our finance department for more assistance once you have the information you need. We'd be happy to help you.

They charge you to simply apply for jobs. This website adds no value to anyone in this particular industry. At no point is this made clear in their ads or on their website that you must pay in order to apply for the jobs. Because this is a scam website, BEWARE: I assume they take the voice recordings that people provide then use the 'auditions' for profit based on their TOS.

Tip for consumers:
voices.com is a scam.

We’re sorry to hear that this is your assessment of Voices.

A few points to clarify. Our free guest membership gives you the opportunity to build up your profile on our website, upload unlimited demos, and receive private invites to jobs. The best way to maximize these opportunities is to fully fill out your profile and add high-quality demos so that clients can see what you're capable of. Both your profile and your demos are essential to success on Voices.

Once you feel you're ready to move to the next level, our premium membership, which does come with a cost, provides daily job opportunities that match a talent’s profile and skill set, sent to the talent directly. Talent on our platform find a great deal of value in what we provide and find this to be a highly efficient way to book work. The membership fee also ensures that the premium talent on Voices are at the professional level required to meet the needs of clients.

We encourage talent to diversify their income streams and offer Voices as one tool—there will be those who find it’s all they need and those who wish to use Voices in addition to other platforms or other opportunities they seek out on their own. Everything comes with a cost of money or time.

We have not and will never sell talent audition files. We do not have the right to use talent work without talent permission in any context or to sell any talent work created on our platform. This includes auditions and demos. Our Terms of Service states this clearly.

I was a member around 2005-06 and recently revisited their fees and rates. Some platforms charge you a flat one-time annual fee. Others charge you a fee only when they get you a job. Voices dot com does both, plus they handle all invoicing and charge a processing fee to the clients. This stops you from building a personal, ongoing relationship with clients. I don't know of any other platforms that impose so many different fees on the talent budget. Talent already have a tough enough time making a living and this seems excessive, especially for those trying to start in the business.

Hi Garth,

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that you’re no longer a Voices member. We’ve continued to make major improvements to the platform since you were last part of Voices, and it might be difficult to fully experience those without a membership.

As a business, we do charge a 20% platform fee to talent (calculated against their client-facing quote) and a 4% or 6% processing fee to clients depending on the client’s payment method (calculated against their job’s total cost pre-tax). We recently increased the processing fee by 1% after many years without an increase.

We make the platform fee clear to talent when they are responding to jobs or selling their projects, and the processing fee clear to clients when they are hiring talent.

Talent are able to adjust their quote when responding to jobs to see what their take-home earnings would be, and we show right there, based on the talent quote, the amount that the client will pay. We also show in this same spot what the platform fee would amount to, so that the talent has all the information.

We encourage talent to always quote what they feel is fair for the work involved. Our goal is to provide the highest possible value to both our clients and our talent to make the fees worthwhile. That being said, we continue to look at pricing and the ways we can improve this element of the customer experience.

The Job Agreement reflects the total amount the client will pay, as well as details about the job, and this agreement is signed off on by both parties before the talent begins work. This is a contract and it protects both the client and the talent. We've also added a feature to the client My Home dashboard, which makes it simpler to re-hire the same talent again, and we're continuing to improve this functionality to further encourage the building of relationships between clients and talent.

Payments are held in SurePay until the talent completes the work, and then payment is released to the talent. Talent are pleased to have this taken care of for them, so they can focus on auditioning and booking jobs, and clients have ease of billing and payments.

We encourage talent to diversify their income streams and offer Voices as one tool—there will be those who find it’s all they need and those who wish to use Voices in addition to other platforms or other opportunities they seek out on their own. Everything comes with a cost of money or time.

Our goal is to connect clients with the best talent, and talent with the best job opportunities. Reviews and feedback from our customers tell us we’re doing this well.

Thanks again for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. We wish you all the best in your voice over career.

A few things:
1.) Booking work on Voices.com can be quite challenging if you aren't among the top 100 talents or don't have rising star status, a new feature they introduced.

2.) Timing is critical when auditioning on Voices.com; if you don't submit your audition within the first 5 minutes of a job posting, it's unlikely you'll be considered. Once around 50 people have already auditioned, your chances diminish significantly.

3.) Voices.com has introduced a "Live Directed Session" feature, which they include in your quote, adding an extra cost to you. It's important to note that directed sessions are not a new concept in the industry; they have been standard practice for many years.

Here's my experience in more detail:
Over the course of four years on Voices, I've had some successes with job bookings and found transparency to be an issue initially. While the platform worked for a while, the dynamics changed, and now it seems like being in the top 100 is crucial for better opportunities. Most of the work leans towards corporate and explainer-type jobs, although there are occasional commercial opportunities too. However, a significant portion of the jobs, like in-perpetuity ads and eLearning narrations, offer relatively low pay.

Though I had a positive booking experience, I question the payment model, as there seems to be a 20% deduction for professional services without clarity on what those services entail. Voices' management can be elusive when asked about it. Additionally, the process can be frustrating, with roadblocks hindering progress just when momentum is building. This is likely driven by their desire to keep more money from talent.

Recently, budgets have shrunk, and commercial work has diminished or pays significantly lower with global usage buy-outs (See attached image). Many job invitations I receive now have meagre payments, making it challenging for experienced professionals. Unfortunately, Voices doesn't seem to prioritize higher-paying opportunities that would benefit talents and job managers. You are often limited within the confines or their corporate structure and have to play by their rules to achieve success. It would be beneficial if they stopped accepting jobs with small budgets, as this practice is negatively affecting the industry.

Regarding customer support, Voices' responses seem generic and don't provide actual solutions; it appears to be damage control for their declining online reputation.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We’re happy to hear that you have had many positive experiences on Voices, booked work, and felt that Voices was transparent and upfront, always ensuring payment.

We’re sorry to hear that your experience has not been as positive this last year, and we’ll pass your feedback along to our team. Voices certainly wants to attract a wide range of jobs with a wide range of budgets, including high-paying commercial opportunities, and we work hard to bring these types of opportunities to the platform.

Although we do allow for jobs with lower budgets to ensure that those Talent who wish to respond to smaller-budget jobs may do so, it’s definitely not our aim to make those the only kinds of jobs available. That would not serve our Talent well and would not serve us well as a business.

We are also working on updating our usage and licensing parameters to ensure that in-perpetuity is selected by clients only when it absolutely needs to be, as we know this has been an area of frustration for Talent.

We’d love to speak to you one-on-one to see what we can do to improve your experience. If that is of interest to you, please reach out to talent@voices.com and Evan Wiebe would be pleased to chat with you and look at the types of jobs you’re seeing to ensure everything is operating as it should be.

Thank you again for taking the time to write, and thank you for being such a valued member of Voices.

I was a Voices member since 2016. I worked the craft part-time, took a year off while working full time corporate because I did not have the time to devote to daily auditions. When I retired over 2 years ago, I had missed this little "hobby" of mine and signed up again. Mind you, I had attended voiceover classes for a couple of years, spent monies there as well as having a professional demo created. Most times, it felt like the monies we shelled out for premium yearly memberships were just draining the funds of struggling voice actors! There were occasional webinars that were helpful, but they expect us to shell out hundreds of dollars just to VIEW the available jobs. Quite often, jobs would go into "deciding" or "completed" status and your audition was never even listened to! I was only awarded one position, and while I did get paid and a nice review from the ad agency, the client opted for a male voice instead. I requested a 50% off membership since I have been loyal for several years, but I was turned down. Best they could do was $399. Sorry, but when you are retired and on a fixed income, it's very nervy and unfair to expect people to pay that much for a one-year membership! They are already getting paid by the clients to advertise their jobs--isn't that sufficient? Obviously not and very greedy. Now, I am downgraded to a "free guest" membership. NOTHING is ever free--this membership does not allow you to view ANY jobs, but the clients can "find you". Good luck with that. This was a huge disappointment. They would not work with me on price, and didn't care to lose a member. There was no damage control, and that is just poor customer service. Best to find another "pay to play" site and stay away from this group. They will just drain your bank account.

Hi Ann,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We’re sorry to hear that this is your assessment of Voices.

As you know, our premium membership, which does come with a cost, provides daily job opportunities that match a talent’s profile and skill set, sent to them directly. Our goal is to connect clients with the best talent, and talent with the best job opportunities to make any fees worthwhile. We do have many talent members making a successful full-time living on Voices.

The premium membership fee also ensures that the premium talent on Voices are at the professional skill level required to meet the needs of clients, which helps to ensure jobs are hired and to ensure that clients continue to come back to Voices to post more jobs. All this being said, we continue to look at pricing and the ways we can improve this element of the customer experience.

It’s true that sometimes clients do not listen to all the auditions that have been submitted for a job, particularly if a job has a very short turnaround time and they find the talent they’re looking for quickly. We know it can be discouraging when this happens. We encourage talent to recognize this as part of the overall auditioning process and to audition as often and as quickly as possible for opportunities.

The guest membership does allow clients to privately invite you to jobs, but you’re correct that this is a more challenging way to book work on Voices. For both the premium and the guest membership, ensuring that your profile and your demos are fully filled out and tagged properly maximizes the possibility of being invited to a job. Our team is here to support you and to provide any assistance.

Our talent success specialist has also reached out to you to let you know that our Black Friday sale is coming up and that will offer the premium membership at a reduced price.

We wish you all the best and hope that you continue in your voice over journey.

Hi Bhavya,
Yes, with a guest membership, which is free, you can create a profile, upload demos or portfolio samples, and be privately invited to jobs. The key to this is making sure you maximize your profile. In order to be matched to jobs, however, you do need a premium membership. A guest membership is a good place to start. More information on our memberships can be found here: https://www.voices.com/talent-memberships. We hope that helps - best of luck!

Auditioning for a VO part is the same as with any other acting role where you show up for the audition and you see 50 other people in the room with you going for the same part. The only difference with VO work is we don't get to see the other people, but they're there. Voices keeps sending the auditions your way. Lots of them. All day long. It's up to you to submit a great proposal and a killer demo.

Cameron was incredibly helpful and supportive in giving invaluable advice, tips and insights to better my audition submissions in order for me to be as successful on Voices.com as possible! I was impressed that her really went thoroughly through my profile to find out what I needed to modify to ensure I had everything I needed to present my best package to a client. In spite the fact that the "welcome" interview should have happened much earlier on when I first signed up for the site, Cameron was aware of that and made up for it 100%!

12/18/19 In one year as a member on the site, I booked about a dozen jobs and made nearly $6,000. So I clearly earned back my $500 membership fee and then some. I read for just over 800 jobs. Over 200 of those jobs never closed, meaning that for whatever reason, the clients never picked a winning candidate. That could have been because projects were canceled, they found voice talent elsewhere, etc. But voices.com really emphasizes that you should be booking between 2% and 7% of your auditions. Since roughly 25% of the jobs I read for never closed, my booking rate was negatively affected. I left voices.com after a year strictly and only because of this reason. Cameron Pocock? Yes, as many here have said, very nice guy. He indicated several times in our two conversations that my low booking rate was due to issues on MY end... audio quality, my ''announcerish'' voice, my cover letters, or my demo page. I never really bought any of that because I've always done really well in voiceovers (going back to 1976) Cameron did have several great suggestions, but ultimately, none of them could compel 25% of clients to pick a candidate and close their jobs out. Interestingly, while the site was insistent that my low booking rate was due to a number of factors, they also tried several times to upsell me on their $3,000 annual membership. ''Hey, you're not booking a whole lotta jobs, sir, but if you'll spend MORE money with us, maybe that'll help.'' I never quite believed that. Cameron, and most of the other folks, with whom I dealt on the site were really nice, but I have found voiceover income to be consistent and equally lucrative by doing business on a couple of similar sites AND with local radio/tv. Voices.com features some very strong VO talent, and I did feel honored to win a job for Budweiser while I was a member there. The site isn't perfect. You have to read for a sh**load of jobs in order to book work. While they really emphasize the importance of a demo page, I never booked ONE job as a result of having the page. Ultimately, you book jobs on the site by auditioning. Thankfully, when you do book a job on voices.com, it can pay extremely well. If voices.com can convince more clients to pick a VO talent for jobs, I'd certainly return as a member. Scott T

Hi Scott,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We’re sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with the number of jobs you auditioned for that failed to close. We understand how frustrating that can be. As a marketplace, we connect clients and talent, but sometimes things can change on the clients’ end including changing budgets, priorities, or needs.

We’d like to invite you to check out our newly rolled out Featured Jobs option, which is a new platform feature that gives our voice talent confidence that a client is ready to hire quickly and complete the job. I joined this company after 45 years in the business in four different countries working for some of the biggest accounts in the world. I had retired, so I joined this part it with my money and all I do is get audition after audition for very low, pay and no results, I also don't know if they are using what I've done and just not paying me so I'm going to give them a bit more of a chance, but I'm going to insert a tone into all my recordings so that they cannot use what I've done, so far, my experience has not been very good There are other good sites out there where they actually check you out for the suitability for the VoiceOver job if that job actually exists in the first place so what I can tell you before you part with your money is Look Around and don't believe everything you read, including this review. In case I'm from another opposition VoiceOver company, but you can find me quite easily and I'm just a VoiceoverGuy like you in many thousands of others. This is what I wrote on Reddit, so you can see I'm trying to find out if they are responsive or is it all just run by computer that spits out jobs and all years AND takes out money

Tip for consumers:
I think anyone wanted to enter into the industry should be wary of companies like voices.com voice123 etc they ask a lot of money and give very little back

Hi Robert,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Even for those who have been in the voice over industry, it can take some time to be successful on Voices.

An essential part of being connected to the best job opportunities for your skills is filling out your profile completely and recording and uploading quality demos. Tagging your demos appropriately helps our matching system connect you with the right opportunities. Auditioning quickly, regularly, and for jobs you can do well is also important. Clients do not have any right to use your auditions for any purpose other than determining the best person to hire for their job. They must hire you, both of you accept a job agreement, and then the client accepts your final uploaded files. Those are the files the client can use.

We offer resources on the website and webinars to provide tips on auditioning and how to find success on Voices. Make sure to check out our Help and Resources pages for tips on creating quality demos, responding to jobs, and more. Our Support team is also always happy to help if you have questions (support@voices.com).

We encourage talent to diversify their income streams and offer Voices as one tool—there will be those who find it’s all they need and those who wish to use Voices in addition to other platforms or other opportunities they seek out on their own. Everything comes with a cost of money or time.

We’d love to speak to you one-on-one to see what we can do to improve your experience. The layout of this website is easy to read and understand. Combine the layout with podcasts to help guide you through the process of recording and submitting auditions, then you've got a formula for success. Though there are no guarantees of success, having a quiet recording space, a good microphone, and acting skills-get coaching on this one... then you have set yourself up for success on this platform.

This site came recommended on someone's YouTube channel as a free site to make money from home so I had to check them out. Upon scrolling through their website, it screams SCAM on all levels whether you're either a client or a talent. (Trust me, in this day & age of doing so much online work, companies like these are easier to spot from a mile away.) They do offer "free" services, not unlike other sketchy online money-making websites, and their extortionate membership fees of $499 and $2,999 per year are immediate red flags.
You may claim I'm misjudging them but I don't want you to experience the unnecessary headaches of these online scams. When a business model is out there to help people, you can tell. When it is there to make money at all cost, you can also tell. Never mind whatever it is promising you, that is just the bait.

This website is being run by people who are in it to make money, period. From my years of working online, such people will take advantage of you whether you're a job seeker or job provider. Ethics are non-existent & you should only proceed to work with them if you do not mind getting ripped off.
Because of my experiences on several online platforms like voices.com, I am taking the time write this review because I am tired of dishonest people enriching themselves over job-seekers & the employers who are honestly trying to help them.
If you're looking for talent, post on a legitimate job-search website. If you're looking for work, do the same - post your services on freelance sites or find a legitimate agency to work with. Do the hard work yourself. Avoiding the hard work is what gives these "companies" the opportunity to take advantage of you. Stay away from sites that promise a bed of roses and throw out sketchy "clauses" or vague conditions instead of being upfront and transparent with you. You'll be better off.

We’d encourage you and anyone interested in other perspectives to check out the multiple 5-star reviews on this and other review sites from both clients and talent who have found success on Voices year after year and who speak to the way they’re supported in their endeavors by our staff, who genuinely care about the success of every person who uses our platform.

For clients, posting a job is always free on our site, and for talent, our free guest membership provides the opportunity to build up their profile, add demos/portfolio samples, and be privately invited to jobs. Once talent feel they’re ready to move to the next level, our premium membership provides daily job opportunities that match a talent’s profile and skill set, sent to them directly. Talent on our platform find a great deal of value in what we provide and find this to be a highly efficient way to book work.

We’re also always working to improve the experience of our members based on customer feedback, and talent memberships is an area of current focus.

I've been a talent there for over a decade so I can give you the good, bad, and ugly.

Good: IF you get hired, it's usually easy money.
Bad: You're competing with newbies/those with zero experience willing to take any job at any cutthroat price.
Ugly: their annual fees are not worth it at all anymore. $500US PLUS a 20% fee on each job, yikes. Also, tons and tons of "this has a run time of about ten hours of voice work, and our budget is $250." Rather than set those clients straight, Voices' replies are "well, just don't bid or bid what you think it's worth". Waste of time. You won't earn a living with this site at all. As a pro, I get maybe 5 contracts a year. MAYBE.

Hi Tara,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We’re sorry to hear that your experience on Voices has not been as positive as time has gone on.

We do know that Voices is a competitive marketplace and we do our best to ensure that experienced talent are getting good job opportunities while also making sure that new talent to the platform get a chance to audition. This is a fine balance, and we are always working on it.

In terms of new talent undercutting experienced talent, this is not what our data shows. There’s an audition process that involves clients selecting the best talent for their job. While there are clients who have smaller budgets, most clients on Voices are looking for high-quality voice over and want to hire talent who can provide that. This is why we work to provide resources, seminars, etc., to new talent - so that they can improve their chances of booking work.

As a business, we do charge a membership fee to premium members, a 20% platform fee to talent (calculated against their client-facing quote) and a 4% or 6% processing fee to clients depending on the client’s payment method (calculated against their job’s total cost pre-tax).

Talent are able to adjust their quote when responding to jobs to see what their take-home earnings would be, and we show right there, based on the talent quote, the amount that the client will pay. We also show in this same spot what the platform fee would amount to, so that the talent has all the information.

Our goal is to provide the highest possible value to both our clients and our talent to make the fees worthwhile. That being said, we continue to look at pricing and the ways we can improve this element of the customer experience.

You’re correct that we do encourage talent to always quote what they feel is fair for the work involved or to pass on jobs that they’re not interested in auditioning for. We also provide a budget calculator and recommended pricing to all clients. Talent are always encouraged to report jobs they see that are not properly priced so we can look into it. Our Support Team can then reach out to the client to let them know what a recommended budget would be for that job and that the client will receive better responses with a more appropriate budget. If you see a job that is not priced appropriately, please report it to us.

We do have many talent members making a very successful full-time living on Voices.

If you have any further feedback on your experience with Voices, we’d love to hear it at feedback@voices.com. This goes directly to our Product team.

Wishing you all the best in your voice over career.

Cameron had a chat with me this morning and he was very helpful and understanding about my studio, suggesting I add a pop filter, and fine tuning a couple of things to help the quality of my recording really shine. While I can't configure a full-time dedicated studio, he was helpful in telling me what also could be done to ultimately, book jobs!
Thanks, Cameron!

I've been able to find really good talent in the platform. Most of them are expert in their craft and have all the experience and equipment.
The service team (project managers, finance, etc) is terrible. Extremely poor communication, lack of coordination, just completely lost. Never go through them. Every time I requested their support to manage a large project, they just delayed it, confused the artists with, overcharged for their "management fees". Also it seems there's a large turn around and absenteeism, as usually I was bounced from project manager to project manager which just delayed everything as I needed to re-explain everything again.

Tip for consumers:
Just deal with the voice artists directly

I am a voice over artist for 26 years now, but since I'm a Voices.com talent, my career experienced a tremendous impulse. Working for unthinkable projects for an incredible diverse markets, and being guided, protected, by a warm and close professional team is priceless. I've been here for 6 years, and hopefully will stay as long as I have a voice.

I've dabbled with voices.com for a few months but have gotten more free time recently to do more auditions.
I also have a consult with Cameron, who was very helpful, supportive and encouraging to me in my efforts to make a couple bucks.
At this point I'd be happy to recoup my subscription fee and make a few bucks, just to prove that I can make money off my voice. If I can take it to another level of income, all the better!

British voice over uk seems to think they are one if the best voice overs in the Industry.
The simple truth is that they aren't as there are so much better.
A Google research will show you that unreasonable and unreliable is commonly used.

My experience with this VO is that it's a very fair comment.

The site allows clients to bid down industry standard rates to pitiful amounts.

The site is also incredibly convoluted especially on the client side.

The customer service management is a joke.

Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We have recently updated our Voice Over Rate Sheet which is backed by data on actual buying patterns and behaviors to inform clients on industry rates, which can be found here: https://www.voices.com/rates. In addition, we encourage talent to submit quotes that are reflective of the value of their services, even if it is in excess of a client's budget. It is then up to the client to make an informed hiring decision, balancing the quality of the performance against their budgetary requirements.

We're sorry to hear you found the site to be convoluted and we'd like to hear more about your experience. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us at feedback@voices.com. We want to make sure your voice is heard as we continue to improve.
