I only use an iPad and while the site allows pre fills for account number and password, the security question had to be typed in. The tiny keyboard is hard to use by touch. So I got locked out and have to wait more than 2 hours per phone to unlock my account (I'm still waiting). Why isn't there a secure email to unlock my account?. Especially since my password and account info was correct.
DO NOT BUY I-BONDS unless you want misery and frustration. Our $10K disappeared from our bank account but there's no proof of our purchase on the awful Treasury Direct web site. Have been trying to reach customer service for weeks, but can't wait two hours on hold. Just awful. Typical federal bureaucracy failure.
I have had an account for 5 years. It was difficult to set up in the beginning, but was finally working fine. I tried to log in in December to buy a gift bond. While logging in, my page crashed and a warning appeared that my account had been locked. I have been trying to get it unlocked for 5 months. If you contact them by email, they tell you to call. The number that is supposed to be customer service has a 1.5 hour wait to speak to someone. I have actually held for longer than that on several occasions. Assuming the Department of the Treasury wants to sell bonds, how on earth can they provide such terrible service. Bad website; hard to use; no support. Worse than the IRS!
I attempted to use Treasury Direct to purchase iBonds. I was swiftly locked out of my account after answering my security questions (They're case sensitive). Sadly, all the bad reviews are true. You may have a chance of using the website without a hitch, but they'll snag you eventually.
They gave me a number to call that's open 8 am - 5 pm eastern time to unlock my account. I called at 3pm, and they did not answer the phone. The next day, I called at 11pm eastern and the wait time was 1:30 hours, then 1:45 hours, then 2 hours. Somehow, the wait time increases...
I had a feeling the automated voice was lying and no one was answering the phone. The next day, I called at 7:59am eastern time, it said it's not normal business hours and the call ended. I then called at 8:00am eastern time, immediately it said the wait time was 2 hours. It continued to say the wait time was 2 hours for the next 2 hours! For me, this confirmed that no one answers the phone and the system is setup to lie.
After this experience, I've decided I will NOT buy or cash any bonds through the Treasury Direct website. I'm going only to purchase iBonds through my tax return and cash them at BOA. They definitely cannot be trusted, it's sad and disappointing because it would of been really convenient.
Good luck and keep your money safe.
Safe from Treasury Direct.
I got on this site to buy some i-bonds in late April. I misunderstood that in order to get the high rate i had to "buy now", in a big rush. I instead got the old rate and won't be seeing the 9 point whatever percent rate. You can also buy T-bills here also. The site has a security feature where they ask you questions to verify its you. I answered most of the questions when i was required to only answer 3 of the questions and remember which 3 questions i answered. I locked myself out of the site which necessitated a call to customer service. I was on hold 45 minutes but most redemptively the CSR was an American who spoke English YaY!
This site appears to be somewhat old school but there is a lot of financial education to be picked up there.
Trying to cash in my 30 year old Bonds. Treasury Direct giving me the run around. No, call back no nothing. You try to call them and you can't get thru. My money and I can't even get it
I held a number of $1K paper EE bonds for the full 30 yrs to maturity, then sent them in for redemption by certified mail late last month. An automated reply said it would take 4-6 weeks to process them! I then messaged them to inquire why a simple redemption with direct deposit should take so long, that I'm a retiree and they're holding a large amount of my money, and that I'm now losing earning potential. I also asked if they pay interest during THEIR delay period. I receive another automated message that it could take up to 5 days for them to even respond! They finally did send me an email that I'll only get the redemption value, and basically that I'll get it when I get it. This is government dysfunction at the maximum, and is even worse than the IRS (who paid interest for their refund delays last year). The US Treasury should be ASHAMED at how they handle people's hard earned money. If you're late paying the US Gov they penalize you and also charge you interest, but when they owe you money it's a completely different story - you get screwed. Perhaps it's part of a strategy by the US Treasury that by holding your money, interest free, it helps them with the huge national debt they've accumulated.
After calling the customer service number 6 times and putting on hold for over an hour but never getting to speak to anyone, I still do not have access to my account after they withdrew 10K 4 months later - DO NOT give them your money
I had a problem accessing my online account and waited hours on their customer service line - the wait time went fr 45 mins -then 60 mins and the 1 hour and 15 mins -the longer I waited the longer the wait time stretched out. Finally had to give up for the day...
My account became locked after I failed to remember which of the laundry list of security questions I previously set answers to. I am accustomed to remembering answers to such questions for log-in, but not remembering which questions I had selected years ago! Nowhere does TD warn you to 'write down your questions' as well as know your answers. Have been on hold all day waiting for a customer service agent. Message continually says 'wait time will be an hour.' Three hours later, up to an hour fifteen. How does that happen? And customer service only M-F daytime hours. Only the Federal govt can get away with this horrible, horrible service. I guess it is better than when they first set it up - back then, even the automated computer service was available M-F during working hours.
Use treasury direct if you want to use a website built in 1965 and probably not updated since. Only way to get information or support is to call. The hold time is hours long and there is no hold music, just a really annoying loud consistent ring and no call back option.
I submitted 5 savings bonds for reissue to a trust and opened a new Treasury Direct account in December 2021. It has been over six weeks and the transfer has still not been made. I inquired online as to the status, and to their credit, received a prompt response that the bonds have been received, but it takes 6-8 WEEKS to process a transaction. I couldn't believe it! I worked in the highly regulated securities industry, and we have very Strickland on the turn around times on processing transactions - many as quickly as 24 hours. I'm shocked Treasury Direct in this modern era can casually say that it takes up to 8 weeks to process a simple transaction. I have additional savings bonds with a surrender value of $250+ that I'm afraid to send them for transfer.
I do appreciated that Treasury direct does respond to my emails. I mailed physical bonds to them three months ago, expecting them to appear in my electronic account in a couple of weeks. It is now three months and still nothing. Not just annoying, but worrying.
I opened my TD account in 2003. The bank I used to link to the account closed and I have another account at another bank. I need to change (add) my present bank account to TD. I printed and filled out Form 5512 (Redemption and Bank Change Request) from the TD website to change the bank and brought it to Chase and Wells Fargo banks (I have accounts at both banks), and both say they do not have a seal or stamp and can't sign this form. Both banks said "do not provide this service" and "no one in my area offers medallion, stamp, or signature guarantee. I brought this form to 4 different bank branches with no success. I can't even access my Treasury Direct account or my money there. I've emailed, and their response is to fill out the form, which I did. Calling is impossible; I've tried several times and they cut me off. Today the outgoing message said, "We are closed today due to technical difficulties. I don't know what to do!
I have no idea what contractor the government hired to create their website but it's third world. It takes forever to open accounts and the security questions are insane if not impossible. If you get locked out, you're doomed. 45 minute to one-hour waits and then they hang up on you. You literally can't get to your money. There is hell on earth and it's Treasury Direct.
I was locked out on called the number, was on hold for an hour! Cannot reset on-line. Worst service ever!
I either mistyped of forgot my password. After 3 attempts it locked my account. It is tax time and I need my tax form. I have been sending emails, trying to call (up to 61 minutes on hold) to no avail. Any combination of numbers you try, will never get you a person to talk with. I was on hold and the recording kept giving me longer and longer estimates of my wait time. I will probably file my taxes without the form I need.
I've used Treasury Direct to cash in savings bonds, but the website is difficult to use. Login page uses a virtual keyboard to enter password and my clicks sometimes register nothing and sometimes duplicate entries. Site does not allow display of password to verify entries. Takes me multiple tries to get in. Once I'm in, an error (?) navigating from one page to another kicks me out my account & requires another login. Wish they would allow password display on login and kick me back to your account page instead of out the website completely. Worst website I've ever used.
I find it nearly impossible to access my account. Site cannot even be reached. Very frustrating and aggravating.
The website IMO was really straightforward and based on secure transactions. Not sure how it will hold up from here but i like the 7 percent current ii rate. Hope it stays high, as inflation likely will
