Management is absent
November 7, 2021

I reserved a car online. I went to pick it up at JFK. I got my contract. That's when the good experience ended.
I got my ticket to pick up a car at 5:53pm local time.
I left the parking lot at 7:15pm.
I will never, ever, use Thrifty again.
They truly do not care about their customers.
Sad.

I rented a car at Cork Airport, Ireland. I booked via Expedia and made sure to buy car rental insurance by a third party. When I picked up the car, I was asked if I had insurance which I did. The Thrifty representative said it doesn't suffice and I need to add 7 Euros a day. I tried to argue claiming I bought insurance but he insisted he won't give me the car unless I add their insurance. When I asked, he shared with me that this literally happens every day, and people get very annoyed.
I reluctantly agreed to the added insurance of 7 Euros a day only to learn that it is accompanied by a 5,000 Euro hold on my credit card! Seeing as I needed to pay for hotels and food, I could not afford to put a 5,000 Euro hold on the card. The agent told me he can reduce it to 3,000 Euros if I take Their 30 Euro/day insurance. Needless to say, this really annoyed me as it is outright extortion. When I voiced my concern, the agent suggested I can shop elsewhere, and he also said that if I don't "calm down" he has the right to refuse to give me a car. So not only is Thrifty engaged in extortion but also threatening patrons.
I have been traveling for business all over the globe for over 12 years and have never had such a bad rental experience. Sure, I've had holds on the card, usually $100-$400, never $5,000! Thirty Ireland company policy is detrimental to their business. Personally, I have no desire to ever book with them again.

NEVER use Thrifty. I prepaid for a THRIFTY rental car thru Priceline. I contacted Thrifty the day of the rental to confirm the car from Thrifty in Jacksonville was available. They confirmed the car was available. When I got to the Thrifty counter around 11:00 pm I was told "sorry all the cars were given away". No explanation. No apology. They offered no help or options. When I asked if cars they would have cars available tomorrow, they didn't know. NEVER use THRIFTY.

The car was okay - Service was a major rip-off
October 4, 2022

Using Orbitz, I rented a car from Thrifty out in California, Sacramento to be exact, in mid-August 2022. Orbitz quote was for $646.41, all in, for one week. After I turned the car in at the airport and was on the plane, after not a peep was mentioned while turning the car over to them, I received a text stating the final bill was -- ready? -- $1,180.14.
The largest gouge, not the only one, but the largest was for $400 for the 'clean fee – smoking'. Except. Nearly the entirety of Northern California was smoke laden because of all the fires in the Sierras, etc. You couldn't go anywhere without living and breathing smoke. With the daily temperatures up to 114 degrees the smoke was baked into the car. Which the folks at the Airport were well aware of, believe me.
When I got home I tried to call Thrifty to challenge this charge. No one answered, ever. After a dozen tries. Orbitz tried to call them, multiple times to challenge this. They said they finally got through and were (my phrasing) told to go pound sand. They could do nothing more.
When I received my credit card statement I called the credit card company and spoke with their Dispute Department. They took all the data and then put me on hold. Know what their answer was? Paraphrased: "Sorry, we can't do anything when it is a business practice."
I won't even get into the fact the lady at the counter ignored the Orbitz Confirmation number, and its specifications, and jacked the quoted weekly insurance rate.
Short version: if Thrifty Rent-A-Car rips you off there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about it. Stay as far away from them as possible.

Pre-paid for a rental through WiseCars plus an extra $60 for a damage waiver through their affiliate Rentalcars, in early May for the Memorial Day weekend in Boston. A few weeks later I spotted a charge of $139.96 from Thrifty for a "Damage Waiver." I did not accept nor did I approve of a Damage Waiver charge of $139.96. Why would I? I had already purchased protection through Wisecars (receipt attached). When my son and I showed up at the Rental Centre at Logan hundreds were lined up. We waited 20' or so to get to the desk. I presented my voucher from Wisecars to the Thrifty woman. All seemed well. She rattled off the types of cars we might get and I queried that because I understood from the original booking process it was to be a VW. She replied it could be a VW (turned out to be a Nissan). She did explain the gas replenishment options -- i.e. Fill up yourself or fill up at their pump. She explained the fee for the toll booths. All good. She did NOT offer a damage waiver. And if she had done, I would have truthfully and firmly informed her we'd already bought and paid for it through Rentalcars. Complaining to Thrifty later they finally presented the signed rental agreement which did have the Damage Waiver as an item (it was a very long, very detailed on "store-receipt" type flimsy paper with 5 or 6 separate items which I should have read carefully -- I just never imagined they'd add something I didn't agree to). So the Thrifty woman had added it without my knowledge -- essentially my word against hers. But again -- why would I agree to a DW charge when I'd already paid for it! This was sharp practice on the part of Thrifty. Thanks to Rentalcars for refunding the original $60 DW.

Made a reservation days in advance. Got to the ticket counter and she said they didn't have a car for me and said I'd need to wait. A bunch of people had already been waiting 3-4 hours for cars they had reservations for. They are obviously overselling reservations, and after a long day of travel, not notifying customers that they can't honor reservations. My only option to get to my event on time was to pay 3X the amount of my original reservation for what she called a "luxury" car and that she was giving me a ""discount". Once I got to the parking lot, my "luxury" car was really a tiny coupe (I had reserved a midsize). Upon looking at their websites, I realized that she wasn't giving me a discount at all and instead overcharged for the compact car I ended up with.

Stay away!
April 30, 2019

I rented a car with Thrifty on April 13 2019 from West Palm international airport. During the checkin process I told the attendant multiple times I need the 'pay by plates' since I would be driving to the florida keys and the drive is all toll roads. The car was fine, I returned and I thought all was good. Since then I have recieved two letters from Thrify stating that I owe $30 in tolls by a $180 'administrative fee'. I have a witness that I ordered the pay by plate option when I signed up for the car. I rent cars frequently in florida and always add this option. What gets me is the $180 administrative fee - This is just a ploy from Thrifty to get more money. I am not goint to stand for it. The confirmation number for my rental is H*******C2.

I am not going to get taken like this. Deceptive business practices.

DO NOT RENT FROM THEM! Rented a car through priceline thrifty and was charged. When picking up the car at the thrifty counter I was charged again and told it would be reimbursed at return. It has been 2 months, no return and no-one answers the phone when trying to contact them.

Only because negative stars are not an option yet.

Reserved with Thrifty (first & last time) Myrtle Beach airport location for pickup 11/1/21. Thrifty "service" rep said we owed over $100 more than reservation quote because we were 20 minutes early, which we weren't- we were right on time.

The agent told us "that's just how it is," which we disagreed with and asked for the manager, who happened to be the agent at the Dollar desk at her elbow.

The Dollar "manager" was quite rude, kept interrupting and was just ugly to us. They weren't going to budge until I remembered and produced a printed copy of the reservation. The Dollar manager immediately disappeared and the Thrifty agent sheepishly completed the transaction based on our printed quote.

I'm sure Thrifty saw two senior citizens and figured they could push us around, tack on additional charges and we would say nothing.

Nice try. Usurious and unethical trash. Thrifty and Dollar are owned by Hertz, so you might look to either Alamo (& National) or Enterprise for your rentals.

My firefly reservation was taken over by thrifty
Thrifty computers all have hertz asset tags on them and the pricing is the same

Of course they talked my husband into upgrading from intermediate to full size
For only 135
It turned out that our 307 reservation was charged at 507 when all of the fees were added
When we went to get the car there were no midsize available anyway
Always a scam
I could have rented a full size car for 357 for the week from Payless
When I called thrifty to ask about all of the additional charges she said your husband signed the contract - it's his fault
Use budget or dollar

My husband and I recently rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental from their Orlando Airport location. We loved the car we were given but that is where the satisfaction ended. We reserved and paid for our car months in advance but when we arrived at the airport, we were required to stand in line in in excess of two hours. They had too few people working the counter for the amount of people that they had rented cars to. Also, part of the reason for the long line was that each customer, when it was their turn, had to endure about 30 minutes of high pressure sales to add on to the cost of their rental. Well we finally got our car and were off for our vacation. While driving around Florida, we used the pay by plate option at the toll booths. We have done this with other car rentals from other companies and would get a bill for whatever the tolls were, so we expected the same to happen here. But when we got our bill, we were in for a huge surprise. For a total of $11 and change in tolls, we were sent a bill for $91 due to "administrative costs". So overall, their customer service is terrible and so is their integrity. We will never rent from them again. We did have a nice car though.

Hidden charges
July 22, 2022

Beware Renting a Car with Trifty. I rented a car via SOUTHWEST. When I booked it clearly states including taxes and everything for $628.19 which seems like is cheaper. However when I returned the car and printed the receipt trifty charged me $681.19 there's an extra charged. I asked the counter and she keep saying it the taxes. I showed her the reservations. She was rude and won't listened. NEVER EVER RENT A CAR WITH TRIFTY. Additional hidden charges are added and get away with it. I should have read reviews before renting a car with them that I'm not the only one got charged extra. READ REVIEWS FROM OTHER SITE ABOUT TRIFTY.

I reserved a mid-size SUV through Expedia. I was to pick up the vehicle at the airport in Phoenix. When I got to the counter, the agent tried to get me to upgrade to a larger SUV but I declined. When I got to the lot to pick up the vehicle, I was informed by another agent that they did not have ANY SUV's. The only vehicle they had available was a Ford Focus. Definitely not an SUV.

I reserved a B group vehicle months in advance. Get to the airport and Thirfty has no one working, so I had to go to Hertz. I understand it's the same parent company, but this was the start. So I get told I can go and choose any car in the certain row at the airport and my choices are a Nissan Versa and Ford Fiesta. Clearly, not B group vehicles. Whatever, no big deal at the time. I return the rental and get the receipt via email and notice that while It clearly says I reserved a B group rental and was charged for a B group, it says I received an A group car. So I reached out to customer service and have had 10+ email correspondences with them. Essentially their position is "oops our bad" and there's nothing we can do about you reserving and being charged for a B group and only receiving an A group car. No offer to refund the difference. After sending several more emails stating this was an unacceptable resolution I finally was offered a $50 car rental certificate. It has been over a month and I haven't received anything from them and they just told me that they would send me another one. But, it is only good until Dec. 31,2022. Their response to their garbage service is here is a coupon you might receive before it expires to use our garbage service again? No thanks. Avoid them at all costs.

I've been renting a car for business on a month to month basis. In an effort to save a little money I went through Priceline and was directed at Thrifty Car Rental. The rental price for a month was $734 BUT I was billed $1389. Now, I understand taxes and upcharges but to almost DOUBLE the rate is borderline robbery.

Oh - and the car was a 2015 VW that had clearly been smoked in, vomitted and possibly urinated in.

I'm very disappointed in Thrifty Car Rental and in Priceline for doing business and recommending this car rental to their loyal customers.
