They aren't transparent about what you will need to file your taxes electronically and if you don't have all of that information like the amount of last year's AGI or PIN numbers or all sorts of other things then you spend the money and you really can't use the service... Also, they make it sound like they're recommended or approved by the IRS but they're not. If you go to the IRS website they have all sorts of free ways to file your taxes electronically and I used one and instead of getting $833 back as in what Tax Act was claiming they could get me, I got back $1,700! Don't use them! Go to the IRS website and use their free options.

Site ads say you can file ALL YOUR TAXES FOR FREE... When you get to try and print or file your State tax, they knock you with a $20.00 fee.

Customer service reads a script - "IF WE DIDN"T DO THAT, WE'D BE OUT OF BUSINESS".

1040.COM IS FREE...

I've been using TaxAct for years and it's not only affordable ($25) including federal and state tax filing, but I was able to use it for my complex tax situation! Highly recommend

Do NOT use TaxAct
June 16, 2021

We've used TaxAct for several years. This year, we owed over 7K on our Federal taxes and opted to pay by credit card, all of which is handled by the TaxAct site when you file your return. We completed the filing and the payment. When we printed our return and forms, they said we had submitted our payment. Nothing ever showed up on the credit card; it was never charged. Now the TaxAct site says we 'elected to pay at a later date.' This is absolutely NOT true. We will now have to pay a PENALTY because of this screwup, and TaxAct refuses to take any responsibility. And it is almost impossible to contact them to speak with a representative to try to fix the problem. In short, AVOID TAXACT!

I've been using this site to file my tax returns for six years and it keeps getting easier and easier to use Granted my taxes are pretty simple to begin with, but with TaxAct, I am able to reliably file both my federal and state taxes in under 30 minutes for just $18. There are no hidden charges and the interface is super easy to use.

Among the features I really like:
- automatic importing of information from your previous return, which basically fills out 90% of the return for you
- system of automated checks, flags, and alerts to catch any possible errors
- comparison of this year's returns with previous year's returns
- ability to print or save your forms via PDF
- ability to immediately file forms and pay taxes electronically

One thing to watch out for -- TaxAct partners with third parties to offer certain services, such as paying your taxes via credit card. If you choose to use those services, there are usually steep transaction costs which are not disclosed by either TaxAct or the partner. I find this borderline unethical, but believe it to be more the responsibility of the third party.

Overall, I've been very happy with TaxAct and will continue to use them in the future. I've actually seen the interface and features get better every year, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a convenient affordable online service to file their taxes.

Customer service
February 19, 2021

Customer service for TaxAct is horrible! They told me I was accepted for a call back because the hood and my wait time was an hour and ten minutes before I could speak to a representative, I waited two hours and twenty minutes for this so call accepted call back and never received anything. I definitely won't be going through TaxAct for next years tax returns. Everything is just horrible, I can't recover my account from last year because I have a different number so I can't recover my account and instead of sending a reset or verification code to my email they send it to my old number. ‍ And it doesn't give you the option to pick which one you would like to send it to. It's such a hassle it's ridiculous. I'm sure they have long hold/ wait times because that's what people are calling about and they probably don't know how to handle the situation so they refer you to IRS.GOV, which I did to save myself sometime instead of holding for an hour or waiting two hours for a phone call that never comes.

I've used TurboTax for all returns in the past, but due to the number of ad and addons, I switched to TaxAct. This is the second year in a row where I have learned my federal return was rejected due to an issue with my PIN. There isn't a place to add the 6 digit PIN, only a place to create the 5 digit PIN. I am paying penalties for late returns because this software can't submit a return in the correct format. I've tried resubmitting with last year's AGI and the return is still rejected. JUST SAY NO to TaxAct. You will pay through the nose in the end.

I will never do this with tax act again. First I never received my federal, which was apparently supposed to come on a serve card. Which off the bat is stupid, they charge extra to put it in your bank account. Even if you are a day late they take $100 from your taxes! Then I tried to get ahold of a human that can help me, they did nothing but send me on a goose chase calling 5 different numbers back to back. Just for someone to tell me to sign up yet ANOTHER separate account. When I was done it did not tell me how much money was on the card so I had no idea if i was even getting my taxes. Now I can't get into a single one of those accounts and I can't get ahold of a human at all. The robot told me I have no money on my card when I should have $190 and let's not forget they already took $100 dollars of my $#*!ing money. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY WITH THESE PEOPLE. They are very unprofessional, it is NOT simple at all.

I used TurboTax and TaxAct to compare and see what my full refund would be. TaxAct said I did not qualify for any of the child tax act credit even though I had a child in mid 2021 and the stimulus as well. TaxAct is a waste of time and money they WILL NOT get you your best refund.

Tax ACT. COM
January 7, 2009

Tax ACT. COM - I have been trying to use taxact.com to start my tax returns I used them in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 I used the free service. In 2007 I paid extra to have the availability to recall and import 2007 tax information and now for 2008 I can not get into my account. I have been filing the assistance need request and following the information while on the phone with the tech support and still I can not get the inforamtion or availability I paid for already in Jan. 2008. I have sent the request for the past two weeks and can not get a response from the owners of the site Tax act. Com I would advise to use the free service but not the paid service because you do not get the support and service promised after they receive your money. That part of the company is a fraud. The company is good with free only to set the consumer up for fraudualant guarentee in order to recieve a higher payment.

Very disappointed consumer DE mccutcheon

Do not use tax act to prepare your financial returns. They mislead self employed customers into believing that they have the capability to handle their financial reporting and then after you finish your tax return; tell you that you can't e-file because they don't have the necessary forms to complete the job if you have taken any distributions from a retirement account etc. So imagine, you've taken your time to prepare your return, paid the bill and realize there is nothing you can do with it if you print the return because the necessary tax forms never come in according to their timeline and they just keep saying they will get the forms any day; which never comes! Weeks later; you are struck with an incomplete return that you can not file because even the printed version requires you to have the appropriate retirement form prepared properly by a tax expert; TaxAct denies you a refund and you are left in a lurch to pay another tax preparation company to prepare the return. May I suggest TurboTax; no problems there! I have learned my lesson; I am done with TaxAct!

It shouldn't take much to log into an account on the road and download software, but TaxAct wouldn't let me do it. They couldn't correct the problems they had with my account and apparently didn't have my security questions synched withmy account. They didn't care that I was a customer for well over a decade,

I use CD's to load at home, but couldn't use them on tablet. So nothing better to do but flame at them for incompentency.

I have used TaxAct products since 1999. A couple years ago, after my Windows PC died, I went to an Apple with Mac OS and had to do tax returns online. It was just as easy to navigate between windows and easy to understand along the way as the software products I had downloaded in previous years.
Help pages helped with passages from latest "J. K. Lasser" tax prep guide as well as well written passages from the IRS own tax prep guide. Importing previous tax returns was a simple process that quickly updated current forms.
Costs were just as reasonable as working on Desktop, about $20 for complete 1040+ state and e-file federal form(s) on a Windows Desktop and about $18 to complete federal 1040 + state AND e-file of 1040, all in a secure online account accessible by most updated browsers.
One feature I like is the program's testing of a completed tax return prior to printing/ e-file to ensure no "red flags" will cause the IRS to question accuracy of the forms submitted. Any "red" or "yellow" lights in the testing mode indicate the user needs to make the appropriate adjustments in easy reach back to the forms in doubt.
A subsidiary of Second Story Software, TaxAct.com is affiliated with the IRS "Free File" program which make e-filing federal 1040s a snap. All in all TaxAct.com has been a very good choice for our family and our small business tax returns.

Much health and happiness to you and yours.

TaxAct user for many years, the desktop software was 'formerly' fairly priced and worked perfectly.
This year however (tax year end 12. 31. 17), the company under new leadership, has become a 100% disaster.
The software would not work on two different computers, both meeting the technology requirements including Internet Explorer 11. (This browser is REQUIRED for a desktop application.)
The technology Customer Support is useless and frustrating.
The product pricing has increased remarkably, even charging on a per-form-basis ($21 extra for Sch C)... unbelievable.
The Customer Support can't even deliver on such a simply and reasonable request to "provide a receipt/paid invoice for eFiling fees, which were paid to TaxAct." No receipt, complete incompetence.
Unless you want to endure constant buggy software which fails with multiple script errors, avoid TaxAct.
After many years, I am done with this vendor, and the person wholly responsible is the Sanjay Baskaran. Blucora Inc needs to fire him.
It really doesn't get any worse than this, stay away!
