Skin Institute

I had my varicose veins treated by the Skin Institute over the course of 2020 - 2021. They were pretty bad and it was my first foray into the private health system. While they are much better in terms of how they look and feel, for my $9000 price tag, I was left underwhelmed at the level of service I received. I never doubted the vein specialist's professional knowledge and the ultrasound technician was consistently fabulous, both in manner and knowledge. However, the appointments often felt rushed as they flew down from Wellington to Nelson, something I wasn't expecting when paying this much. What was most disappointing though, was having to make a follow-up appointment to find out the information that my veins are sufficiently dysfunctional that, at the end of my treatment, new ones had already formed that fell outside the treatment time in the contract. I felt like I was being a hassle by requesting an appointment to ask about this after my treatment had officially finished (a kind of 'why are you here again?'), but was not told up-front through clear communication that I could expect to have ongoing issues with my legs. I found this lack of communication and transparency disappointing - not what I was expecting from a private health care provider such as the Skin Institute. Though the vein specialist confidently told me 'I'll be seeing you again', I'm not so sure about that.
