For years id been taunted by my 5th grade teacher constantly mocking and yelling "common sense" at me in the middle of class. I've just recently found out i'm on the spectrum so i came online to say $#*! your you taylor swift hating sexist $#*!
I have tried to post honest positive and negative reviews of different professors. Most positive reviews got posted, but all negative reviews, albeit constructive, were taken down. I think they have some personal incentives to take them down, maybe due to connections with profs, bribes, etc. In any case, this is not an honest review site, heavily biased by moderating, don't believe the review stats.
The droves of disgruntled teachers and staff writing negative reviews are case in point, that criticism and feedback are critical in a system that regularly targets students and employs demeaning, intimidating educators.
Ratemyteacher is a decent service which allows the underrepresented student body to speak out and inform others of negative and positive experiences. My only complaint would be the lack of moderation, and how easy it is for offended teachers to take down reviews based on feelings alone.
As a student I loved going to this website to see silly reviews of kids who were A. Going after a teacher who is bad enough they should be fired or B. Unreasonably angry at a teacher whose class they failed. However I was very disappointed to see how much the site has changed due to enough teachers (either in denial of their failure or actually devastated) complaining and having the comments removed entirely.
Instead of creating comment guidelines that would ban all written reviews that cross the line, the site has now completely banned all written reviews. As someone with anxiety, I heavily relied on the written reviews to prepare for any teachers that are anything less than... let's just say "polite." Now it's all gone... makes you wonder if the teachers who were offended by their complaints DESERVED the complaints they got.
Used to be a necessity before each coming school year to read about the teachers that I will be spending the majority of the following year with, but censorship has now ruined a once beautiful thing.
Maybe creating guidelines as to what people can or can't write would be better than completely eliminating the REVIEW part of the review... Every factor that is rated is subjective and doesn't tell nearly as much as a well thought out review about both the objective and subjective parts of their teaching style.
Instead of knowing that this teacher goes off on tangents every five minutes about Love Island, we now know that this teacher has a five star rating about textbook use (whatever the hell that even means)...
It used to let teachers and parents write comments, but now they just allow students to comment. The majority of these students are the disgruntled ones, that don't do their homework, turn in late assignments, blame their teachers for bad grades, and complain if they are challenged. The site is public shaming wall and hurtful for the teaching profession.
Such a joke they are naming a field after this psycho (attacked students physically and verbally for years). The field should be named "Roger Reynolds field" - the coach of Senior Football team who actually won championships and was a patient and considerate teacher. Bruce "coached" the useless junior football team.
Fake website. They do not allow new users, new comments, or anything. I was abused by teachers in Portland, OR growing up, and it brings me sadness this website contributes to the abuse, removal of good information, and keeping kids from learning who their abusers are and what permanent may be done to them. School is NOT OPTIONAL for kids, teachers know this and set themselves up to abuse kids. Ratemyteachers plays their part in enabling this abuse by pretending to be a real website but you can see they have no users or reviews, nor did they ever send me an account confirmation link. Fake website. Take it down. Let a real team create a website here.
The old site was good, and allowed students to communicate honest opinions. The problem? Students were harassing teachers. What should have been the solution? Higher moderation and addressing flagged and reported comments. Their solution? Removing a student's ability to actually rate their teacher. It's useless now. I believe that there is a VERY large difference between being insulted because of your identity (such as homophobic and misogynistic comments) and being insulted because you are a terrible teacher. I remember seeing a teacher complain; I wish there was a site called ratemywhingystudents.com. Now, teachers like this who seriously believe it's the students that have an obligation to them, and not the other way around that have come out on top. If you are a teacher that thinks like this, and was glad the website changed because you no longer had to deal with criticism, I hope you lose you job, in complete and utter honesty.
They allow for unsubstantiated slander against teachers that may have been written by those with a hidden agenda and may not really be students. The site callously allows for detrimental statements to be made that can impede with a teacher's ability to earn a living. Shame on the owners of this site!
I used to be an avid user of ratemyteacher, but after they removed the comment part of the review, it is nothing but a disappointment. This truly is a tragedy, and shows what our world is becoming. This blatant censorship is not only unfortunate, it is also quite frightening to me.
This site died the day they took out to activity feed. (Teacher A rated 1 day ago, teacher B rated 2 days ago)
Killed all momentum it had and its never been the same. Combined with the censorship, its completely worthless these days.
Rate My Teacher used to be amazing. But now that they removed commenting, it doesn't make sense to even bother looking at the reviews of any of the teachers. Commenting allowed me to really understand what the teachers were like since comments were coming directly from the students. But now, it doesn't even help.
I loved looking at the funny comments but also liked reading the serious criticism of teachers who sucked. I had a lot of sucky teachers and many of the serious reviews were true and pointed out SERIOUS flaws in our education system. But many of the teachers are sensitive and can't take a joke so it changed and now there are like no reviews and it kinda sucks.
An emotionally disturbed student wrote disgusting, vile comments about me and they were on this website for six months before I discovered them and contacted the site. I was so shaken by these comments, that ended with the suggestion that someone rape me, that I felt unsafe in my classroom. I don't believe that our Constitution was ever intended to protect online bullies.
Once again you have a coward's site where students who usually are failing in a class, decide to cowardly attack some type of teacher or professor. Recently (I am an advocate against cyberbullying) the site did start monitoring posts a lot more and do not allow comments to immediately go out over the internet. However, the site is still destructive.
I am very disappointed that the new owners of "Rate my Teacher" (as of 2019) deleted all the previous students' reviews of their teachers which had accumulated during a period of over 10 years worth!
The correct option should have been to remove any rude, racist and threatening reviews. As well, the new owners could have instead made changes to their website to prevent any such inappropriate future reviews. Unfortunately, by deleting all of the students' reviews they have also removed the accurate and relevant reviews that would have benefited many other future students. Censorship is not a solution, and often backfires. We all know too well that there are some terrible teachers out there. Students had no other way of expressing their experiences with their teachers. Unfortunately, teachers are not subject to performance reviews, as they should be. Our government should immediately make performance reviews mandatory for all teachers across Canada/
Today, almost every working adult has an annual review. Teachers can have a profound affect on a student's emotional well-being and future success in their professional life. Why are teachers not being evaluated each year like most professional adults?
This site is an embarrassment to its founders and the education system. How can a site be granted the freedom to disrespect the teaching profession an all the men and women who work so hard, day in and out to educate students? The site contributes to a culture of devaluing education and teachers. What an absolute disgrace! I can't imagine this sort of disrespect of teachers in educationally advanced countries who put us to shame. Very very sad.
A site for disgruntled adolescents to badmouth teachers? Some say hateful things and it is not censored nor deleted. SHAME on this site. The well adjusted good students often dont post. They are doing their work... Imagine if teachers posted on RatemyStudents?... there would be outrage!
Answer: Scam - they are a site supposedly built around community comments, but they have no comments, no users, and do not allow new users. Just delete your site and stop lying like you have a website to lure in kids only to have them get lost scrolling through HORRIBLE website design they make you click through small windows of alphabetized town names for your state, rather than just having a search option for your school. It takes 10 minutes to even find your teacher on here with dozens and dozens of clicks, whereas say a Google search would accomplish this with one search. Take this website down for being mis-leading to kids who are tying to not be abused by abusive teachers.
