Spending money on bids and then losing the auction is pretty horrible. I have not tried other sites yet but it looks like BigDeal.com gives you credit for all bids that you used when you don't win the item. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/19/bigdeal-com-reinvents-and-legitimizes-swoopos-controversial-auction-bidding-model/
The website is definitely a waste of time, anyone who can do a little probability calculation will know the expecting profit is below zero, unless you don't know how to use your money wisely and are willing to put your time and energy in such a stupid slot game, I recommend those who are looking for a decent deal go for normal websites such as Ebay or Amazon.
Just do the math:
A bid costs between $0.55 and $0.75. Say on average users pay $0.6 per bid. Each bid is a $0.1 step.
A recent auction that ended was a $200 Apple Gift Card that went for $113.30. That are 1133 bids (at $0.1 per bid) they got for that card.
So 1133 bids times $0.6 per bid are $679.80, and then they get the $ 113.30 from the highest bidder. So the total "money in" for them is $793.10 - "Money out" is $200 for the gift card. So they made a nice $593.10 on a $200 gift card. They print money with that site, a lot of users all lose a little bid. Stay away.
This website is a scam.the items that are sold are put back up again for auction u are bidding against the website. I thank someone should step in and shut nthem down. Where is the consumer protection.
The problem here is you've got people set up side by side, or not, with the main focus of becoming the last two putting bids in - scares everyone else off - they both look like they are not giving up - then one lets the other get the win - sell the stuff and split the profit. Each gets twenty wins a month - between the two thats forty - or if three working together then sixty - the profit THEY are making is just as great as Haggles.
I think this site is an absolute scam. Really... an I Pod for. 90 cents, no way, a Kindle for $40, double no way. I see the same people all over the place bidding on everything and winning. What a rip off! Look we should just go the casino and gamble. What a shame someones making money this way. That's all from the wife.
Now from the Husband, who found the site and bought $52 worth of (useless) bids... he is very disappointed (Ithink wife told him so... LOL). They advertise low prices in this economy to sucker people in and then take advantage. They #$%^)^ suck.
I read negative reviews about Haggle prior to signing up and bidding on merchandise. I have won 32 items since signing up the first of November and have received all of the items which were exactly as described. I have had to email the company a few times concerning minor issues and they responded in a timely manner. I observed the site for two weeks before I started bidding to get a feel on when to bid and what time of the day gives the best chance of winning. I hope others stay off the site so I will have a better chance of winning!
I bought a small amount of bids to bid on one item for a gift. I soon realized that the looping that others described as people come in on the one second that adds time can go on for hours. I will use up the rest of my bids, doubt that I will win, and be done with this site. I want to use my time in a different way than watching bids and being charged for the opportunity to jack up the price and waste multiple hours of my time and other users to "win a great deal."
Haggle.com is a waste of time IMHO. I won't waste money on the bids, and found that the 13 free bids I got for signing up was just a way to frustrate the piss out of me.
I do know that the employees are forbidden from bidding themselves and the "Insiders" that I know, swear to me that it's not rigged, and I believe them. However, I do think that it's pretty much impossible to win a bid for the prices they are advertising, so if there's a scam anywhere, it's in the advertising.
I would expect, if I had the 5 hours to hang out and watch the bidding war, that the price of an item would be close (still a fraction however) to the retail price listed once it actually sells.
Waste of time in my opinion, the only one who wins here is Haggle (Infospace/Will Lansing)
It's a big scam and rip off site and a big pyramid scheme. Here is a simple calculation:
Lets say you are bidding on an ipod touch 32GB at 10 cent bids
Sale price is only $269 on Amazon
On haggle.com it is listed as $299
And someone wins the bid at say $100
That works out to $100/. 10 = 1000 bids
Each bid costs around 50 cents minimum.
So the total amount made by the site from bidding alone is 1000 * 50 cents equals $500
Total amount haggle makes from the sale - 500+ 100= $600
What a rip off!
But for the winner, it might be cheaper depending on his bidding. Say it cost about 50 bids ($25) to win the auction, total price would be $100+ $25 plus shipping.
But for the site, it's a windfall. Its even worse on a 1Cent auctions. You can do the math.
I also suspect a bot bidder by the site to increase the bid value and also stretch the time.
It is a waste of time... never win anything but spend money without getting anything for it. I am wondering if this site does not have people bidding when the bids are low because you never even get close. I think this is a joke... i spend alot of money and got nothing.
Totall scam... spent 40 dollars on bids... spent all day on it to win ps3, never got one and i noticed same bidders winning every ps3 for like 9.00 or 14.00 dollars. People get real you can't win or buy a ps3 for 9.00 or 14.00. You talk of all these winning bidders with savings of 93% or 97%. Ya. There in your haggle office collecting a check from haggle.com. Total bs won't be spending my cash there ever again... beware
This website is a SCAM! I was very excited at first and then realized that the SAME people are bidding 24 hours a day on the same items I am bidding on - I personally believe they are employees who are jacking up the price or the site itself has automated bidders to jack up the price. I got taken and have learned my lesson. I see a few people have said on here that they "won" several auctions however perhaps they also work for the site and need some "good" reviews. The overall majority of reviews of Haggle.com say SCAM so my guess is, if you have 90% saying SCAM and 10% saying "I won" - I would probably stick with the majority of reviews... Sorry to those that got taken like me, live and learn...
I see a lot of people saying that someone is outbidding their self and that people are bidding way to many times and that all of the bids they use will cost them more that they save on the item. I am no expert and i am not saying haggle is legit but i think what happens is that you can set up a price on an item and as soon as someone bids more than you haggle automatically bumps your price up until the price reaches the price you didnt wanna go above. Also their are auctions on bids which means that these people that buy bids for really cheap and building their bids up without spending much money, in other words when you see someone bidding to many times on a computer or other item its probably because they have built their bids up and are trying to scare other bidders away from that item. Again i am not saying haggle.com is a legit site, this is just my opinion
There are various version of these sites on the Internet. The concept is the same you are bidding with quantity not money. Its "supposely" the highest number of bids you make but there is no way to really know what is going on on these sites. The only person getting a good deal is the people running it ;) Don't waste your money or time.
I concur with the people here. I was bidding on a kindle and the same user kept bidding and it was immediately after the last bid which to me suggests automation. This person probably had like 100 bids which is more than the kindle was worth. Why would someone do that unless they werent paying for the bids. It is really fishy. Im also watching another bid with a christine99 who originally bid on a previous ipod and the final price was at 59 %. I would stay completey away from this site
I think this is just a waste of everyones money. There is nothing but a bunch of bullys that bid and try win everything and i am sure are re-selling it on ebay or something. Lets have this money waster shut down!
Watch the items for a little while before you bid see whos bidding and how often then you decide how you want to bid, I wouldnt bid on the things that the same people are continuously bidding on
I think it's fradulent. I don't think the user names are real. I think you are going up against the website itself. How do you know they are real people. The only real people are the ones like you and me that get taken for a ride. The rest of them are probably the website itself and what you see happening; is just o reel you in.
I have to agree with the other views. I used my free bid on a Wii Gaming System that was less than $20 with 2 seconds left as soon as I bid on it the time went back up to like 20-30 seconds. If you were the only one wanting the product it woud be an awesome deal, but I think they are getting your money throught you having to pay for bid, so the money you "save" on the great deal you are actually loosing through the bids you buy.
eXcite has a rating of 1.8 stars from 97 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with eXcite most frequently mention ipod touch, bidding war and good deals. eXcite ranks 106th among Penny Auction sites.
