I've been in school all my life and I've never had such a great teacher as Helena. She's patient, fun and keeps me challenged. I have loved learning from her the past year. It has been a transformative experience-not just being able to do my tones correctly now, but just being more confident as a person. Thank you Helena!
I was referred to eChineseLearning from a friend of a friend who's son was learning Mandarin. I was so impressed by how much they raved about it, I wanted to see what it was really like. My daughter and I took the first free lesson and she responded so well to it, we went ahead and did six months. She looks forward more to her Mandarin lessons than any school or dance classes. I'm thrilled with how she's improving and her performance outside of the classes--i can see she feels more confident in other academic areas because of her ability in this one. So worth it!
Learning at eChineseLearning is one of the best things that I have done in recent years.
I was transferred to Shanghai two years ago by my company. I completely freaked out at that time. I asked myself "How could I live in a city where there is no English?"
I figured that I'd take some Mandarin lessons prior to arriving in Shanghai. I also wanted to quickly improve my business Mandarin, and my Chinese speaking ability.
Fortunately, ECL fit all of my needs!
I am now living in Shanghai and speak Mandarin fluently. I really appreciate it!
I have had the best teacher for the past 3 months at echineselearning. I'm kinda shy and have been lagging in my chinese language course at university because of my inability to feel comfortable speaking in front of my peers. Jennifer has totally changed that. So pleased with my experience with this course--love that it was tailored to me every time. Thank you, Jennifer!
I signed up for this site after I didn't have time to attend my evening Chinese classes at the community college. I had a few lessons with a private tutor in New York but it was super expensive.
EChineseLearning was a great option and I liked their free trial lesson. I signed up for some summer course and decided to renew my subscription for another year as the lessons were going well.
It's more affordable than a private tutor in my city and more convenient and personal than an evening adult course. Can't go wrong!
I'd recommend also using a few apps and websites to help when you're not in class. These apps can't teach you Chinese though- they just help along the way.
Really cool thing! You can learn a lot more one-on-one than you can in the classroom, so I dropped my community college Chinese class and went with online courses. After some free trials with other groups, I went with ECL, as they're the most-established of the online Chinese language schools. So far, it's been great. I'm saving a lot of time by not driving to school and just staying in. I get immediate feedback with each lesson... that never happened in college!
My family is from Malaysia and we are currently living in Canada. It has been difficult to have family members teach our children Mandarin Chinese, mostly because we don't speak perfect Mandarin and the kids want to discuss other things or play, rather than get to work.
EChineseLearning has a special program for kids from families from Chinese heritage families. We did a free trial for both kids with them and then decided to sign up for the lessons due to convenience.
So far, so good! It's convenient and the kids stay focused on the friendly teachers and lessons. Much better than trying to teach them ourselves!
China has about 5000 years history, which means its culture and traditions are really complicated. I wanted to know more about Chinese history and culture, so I signed up for some Chinese culture classes with eChineseLearning. The teacher is patient and professional, which is essential for beginners, because we may ask some questions that sound "stupid" to natives.
The teacher is also able to explain some complex terminology used in Chinese culture by listing simple examples. She also gives me great recommendations for books about Chinese culture and history. I love this class because it has helped me realize how different Western countries and China really are! In the 21st century, it's definitely worth it to learn about this culture that has existed for so long! My lessons with eChineseLearning will help me do just that.
Five years ago, my daughter wanted to go to a high school in China to exchange for a year. I was very happy for her but also worried about whether she can adapt to life in China. Hence we decided to let her learn Chinese in advance. We lived in California and tried many local Chinese tutors. However, my daughter didn't show much interest in lessons. So I searched online and found eChineseLearning. After one free trial, Doris (my daughter's name) seemed to find her passion in this language. At the very beginning, she found Chinese difficult to learn as other children did. Rememering Chinese characters almost made her crazy. Luckily, she met a very patient and responsible teacher-Nora. She always encourages my daughter, helps her review in time and practices Chinese. Gradually, my daughter can understand simple Chinese conversations and speak short sentences. She told me she really enjoyed her Chinese lessons here. Although now she returned to America after the exchange, she still continues to learn Chinese at eChineseLearning. The teachers here are high-qualified and the products are cost-effective. My daughter always recommends the school to her friends, lol...
My wife and I had been planning to adopt a child from China for years, but we were always a little put off by cultural challenges. We didn't want to force our culture on a kid, you know? So we decided to learn about the culture first. For my part, that meant learning some Chinese. I took a class with eChineseLearning for one year, and it really did give me the kind of exposure to the culture I felt I should have before deciding to adopt. My teacher not only shared with me knowledge of Chinese language, but taught me a little bit about the culture, too. My wife and I are still deciding whether to adopt, but I can say that eChineseLearning definitely helped open my eyes. We're traveling to Beijing soon, maybe that will seal the deal!
English is not my native language, and its always an experience to learn a new language use a second language. The staff at echineselearning really go out of their way to make me feel supported. My primary teacher and other teachers are lovely and very helpful. Chinese is my 5th language and I enjoy learning languages online. I did a 6-month intensive course before signing up for classes and find it is a good way to keep improving month by month. If you are short on time and really want to get a good grasp of the language this is the route to go.
My husband and I have been in the process of adopting our daughter, yes--for the past two and a half years. I'm telling you, having these lessons has made the whole thing bearable! I am able to communicate better with all of the key stakeholders who participate in the process, and already know that once we have our daughter she will be taking lessons with Joyce, too. I am so grateful to Joyce for being there for me and my family and helping make this wait worthwhile!
My parents had been been pressuring me for years to learn Chinese but didn't really have the patience or qualifications to teach me, even though they are Chinese. I tried to learn on my own or with my Chinese-American friends, but it's tough to figure out where to start.
I decided to go with online classes and choose eChineseLearning for the quality of their free trial and good customer service. I made great progress online, then could practice with mom and dad at home!
I have had a great experience with eChineseLearning, from the enthusiastic teachers to multitude of the learning materials. I have tried self-study and some other programs and could never get the language to stick. Then, I tried the online classes and suddenly it started to make sense. Sometimes you just need a teacher in real-time to walk you through things, and importantly provide examples! It is so nice to be able to make sense of new words and grammar with the help of a great teacher.
I am an Asian Studies major with a minor in Japanese. When it came time to learn Chinese, I started from the beginning. Although Japanese was reasonable to learn amongst my classmates, I decided to focus on learning 1 on 1 with a native speaker for Chinese. Echineselearning seemed to be at the top of the pile for online Chinese programs, so I gave it a shot after my trial lesson. It worked out great, as my speaking progressed and I gained in confidence. If you're taking Chinese classes back home, this is a great supplement for speaking.
I started the classes because I've been working in finance over in China for sometime. I finally got sick of being the most inept and ignorant, culturally, in the meeting room. Their lessons for industry-specific Mandarin has been immensely helpful to me. I can now communicate better with partners and clients--and this has created stronger business relationships. I'm glad I went with it and have stuck to it. To my surprise, I'm actually learning the Mandarin.
The free trial surprised me--by how much time the team took to assess my level of mandarin and create a learning path that would fit where i'm at. I'm through my first month and really look forward to it in my weekly schedule. It's great to be able to schedule language classes at exact times that suit me. If you're on the fence, do the free trial.
If, like me, you can't just up and move to China, eChineseLearning is a pretty good language-learning substitute. Their one-on-one tutoring over Skype gave me better control over what I was learning (and the speed i was learning) than any classroom ever could. Plus it was great since I worked because I could schedule my hours whenever was most convenient for me--i could structure my lessons around my life instead of having to fit my life around them! The only reason this is 4 instead of 5 stars is the pricing is a little on the high side, but for the experience of the teachers and how easy it is to start learning immediately from it, I'd say it's more than worth the cost.
I had learned Spanish in high school (slowly) and French quite quickly (two years in Montreal).
I wanted to learn Chinese, but my job can't allow me to live in Asia. I signed up for lessons with this company and it worked extremely well. 1-on-1 face-to-face lessons at my convenience. Worked incredibly well and I continued into my second year this week.
In the future, I hope to go to China when I retire to practice with I've learn the ECL. Not only have they helped me with my language, they've also inspired me to learn more about Chinese culture. If you join them, your language skills will improve, but also your motivation.
Suddenly I found myself living in China. My job transferred me from NY to Shanghai. I was glad to make the move--it's only for a few years--but I felt under-prepared because of my language skills. I knew no Chinese before I arrived, and when I got here I was overwhelmed. Being that I'm busy with work, I signed up with eChineseLearning to improve my Chinese in my free time. I'm pleased to say it's worked. My Chinese is getting better each day, and I'm adjusting to this new environment easily as a result.
Answer: Not free. It is a Chinese school where only Chinese can be learned, not Japanese. I haven't studied Japanese and I don't know which Japanese language schools are good.

Reviewers satisfied with eChineseLearning most frequently mention free trial, online lessons and high school. eChineseLearning ranks 185th among Language Learning sites.
