“2016 words learned in the paid version”

C.G W.
2/17/24

Duolingo is a blast as you work your way past he Diamond League - winning 1st place. Now I don't have the paid version anymore. So Duo stopped teaching and left me hanging with the same 5 words like a broken record. No real grammar but enough vocabulary for transitioning to another learning platform. So yes, the paid version is fun and effective up to 2000 words. That is why I recommend Duo and his friends.

“Passive aggressive emails”

J M.
2/15/24

I stopped practicing Duolingo for a few days and received ridiculously critical emails? Is this way of motivating people to participate? I found it aggressive and rude. The last message was 'how do you say quitter in Italian?' That's downright bullying. Do better … a lot better Duo Lingo because like others affected by this experience, you've lost me as a participant and I will not recommend as an effective language learning app.

I really like the app except on the speaking exercises with the blue microphone don't work 95%of the time. Duolingo customer service is really different to get a hold of. I have tried to use their automated help with this issue but it doesn't help. Other than that it's a good app.

I installed their app a few years ago and since then have been binge learning languages with duolingo from time to time. With them you don't feel too much pressure and can study at ur own pace. Their funny reminders and the chance to end 7 day streak on top of the chart and get a reward is really inspiring and makes you keep learning! Cool app!

Duolingo teaches me a lot and, in conjunction with my excellent French teacher, in class, I have progressed a lot since joining. I love the stories and most things about the language course but I have a strong complaint.

I think that the site has been updated well since you removed the "report a problem" section but I no longer have the opportunity to object when I write original English, exactly and grammatically as I would normally say it, only to be told that my answer is wrong! The most regular one that I am being corrected on now is when I am asked to translate, " J'ai seulement un centime" and I write, that I have only one centime which is entirely correct and also the way I speak. There are several similar similar phrases where this occurs. I am sure the translations in other languages which have variant gramnar, are not rejected, so why should mine be. I know how to speak my language better than you do just as a Japanese person does, so my answer, written in my mother tongue instead of in yours, should be accepted.

Great introduction to a large variety of languages, fun and easy to use. The service is constantly being improved. One slight drawback is that their scoring system, if you care about this, has become extremely muddled through constant tinkering. It's not a big deal, it doesn't affect the learning content, which is outstanding; but presumably Duolingo thinks it serves a motivational purpose since they offer it. It is therefore somewhat frustrating to be scored separately on different devices, and penalized hundreds of points if you use the wrong device on a particular day. I asked them about this once, and (unusually for Duolingo) got a reply: "We decided to do it like that." OK then. I still recommend it, it's my favorite app.

I work with French people at my work. I didn't understand a single word when they talked to me. But thanks to Duolingo I can communicate better. Duolingo is indeed a helpful tool to learn a new language. It's easy to use and the results are seen right away. I use the free version. The only thing I don't like is the ads, but they just pop when you finish a lesson.

Love Duolingo app on my iPhone. It's fast, interesting and quite simple in use. Learning Spanish language for me right now seems like a game.

I really like how easy to use this app and how entertaining learning is with Duolingo. However, sometimes it's hard to memorize the words because you pass the lesson and that's all.

As I am not a native English speaker, I was looking for a great English learning service. Now I am satisfied with exercises, topics, all other technical issues. Many thanks

I'm learning Norwegian.
The site is interesting, and the points and daily counter does add a game-like feel and makes you want to return.
I like that there's various types of practices and it's not just matching pictures with words. The little info portions of each lesson are good.

My only complain is that they ran some things too deeply into the ground.

I am not quite sure why Duolingo changed their format regarding the amount of
''skill points" from 10 to 3 for lessons already learned. Via E-mail Duolingo incites competition between users stating " X person has x amount of points, are you just going to sit there?" It seems incomprehensible to work so hard for so little! This sounds a little " Big Brother-ish " to me, where DL is monitoring what we do and how we do it. Why not raise the skill points for new lessons to 15 and leave the lessons learned@ 10? Too much work for just 3 SP's.

I am currently using Duolingo for Czech and Dutch. Mind you, I speak both languages and I've been looking for a program that would help me refresh what I know. So when I found Duolingo, I was pretty excited. I'll go over some of my points to highlight the pros and cons of Duolingo.

- Interface. Personally, I think Duolingo has a fun user interface that allows for easy navigation for new learners. This also brings me to the layout. Each language has a "tree" which contains all the lessons Duolingo has to offer. You start simple with greetings, but this progressively turns into forming full sentences.

- Price. Duolingo is totally free of charge.

- Language diversity. Duolingo has many languages that range from Spanish to Klingon. What's great about the site is that you can add as many courses as you like for free.

- Feedback. Duolingo has a great feedback system in that it shows you what you missed on the translation. It has you correct the sentence at the end of the lesson. The great thing about this is that if you don't do this, you're unable to move on to the next lesson.

- Teaching. Personally, I'm iffy on this point. Duolingo does introduce an extensive amount of vocabulary to new speakers, but what it doesn't do is teach you the grammar you need to know to use that vocabulary.

I can conclusively say that I recommend Duolingo. It's fun to learn from and is user friendly. However, I wouldn't solely rely on Duolingo to learn a language. Some great sites I've found over the past year are FluentU articles, IWillTeachYouALanguage and some other ones I'll list below for reference.

*The pictures below show the extensive amount of languages Duolingo has to offer. These are the results for courses specifically for English speakers.*

Duo lingo is a lot of fun! Learning languages can be hard, but with this website it makes it so much easier. I would recommend them, especially since it is FREE!
