The overall reputation of Covered California reflects significant dissatisfaction among customers, primarily due to a confusing enrollment process, unreliable website functionality, and inadequate support from customer service representatives. Many users express frustration over billing issues, lack of clear communication, and the challenges of navigating the health insurance landscape. While some customers acknowledge the importance of the service for tax purposes, the prevailing sentiment is one of disappointment with the quality of coverage and accessibility to healthcare providers. Improvements in user experience and customer support could enhance customer satisfaction and trust in the service.

This is the worse insurance on the market especially since California is one of the most expensive states in the Country. You might think that it is a good plan but once come tax season it will bite you because you are trying to make money. My Auntie got blasted with 11k that she needs to pay in taxes and the funny thing was she didn't make that much money either. It is around 60k in San Francisco and from what I heard from her that is not including 200 a month that she needs to pay in Premium. So what does this say about Obamacare in general? It is a scam (or legal scam) and the fact that Obama allowed this to pass makes him one of the worse Presidents in our history.
Share Zaker is the best representative in the world! She understood my situations! I have been with her for a few years now. I will not change.
Every time I need to get on the site to make changes, my account is blocked, username not correct. Why? I am very tech savvy and organized, like most of you out there, shop on line and do everything on line all the time. But if I try to sign in my accout with my correct username and password, it wouldn't let me after 3 tries. Who is there messing around with my username and password? I feel Cover CA just want me to make the call, but all I needed to do is to pay the bill since it claimed the check didn't arrive.
Everytime if I have to make some changes, it's another 2 or 3 hours of my time. Hello? People do know how to pay online okay? The insurance agent sounded like I'm so stupid that I messed it up, now he has to act like a hero to save me. Look, who doesn't know how to retrive password and username?
Long story short, I have very lousy experience and like some recomendation to purcahse insurance else where when looking for the next job. Thank you.
If you have no other choice for health coverage, at least now you know "what's in it". Thank's a lot!
My wife required joint replacement surgery, both hips and one ankle. Done and covered in about 18 months. She's doing great! Six months after the fact, we got a bill for $55k and a "revised approval", from Covered Cal, denying the entire ankle surgery. Got that? Pre approved as necessary, then reviewed and denied. We had to fight for 6 months to prevent this government clusterf@#%.
One of the worst insurance experiences. Would give zero stars if possible. Site and account errors, including an unauthorized adjustment by the county to my account that resulted in pricing errors and future tax implications. Covered Ca could not fix, and when county finally addressed, Covered Ca retroactively increased my payment amount. Absolute nightmare, hours on phone. Forget Covered California and either go to the insurance directly, or forgo altogether. Expensive, exhausting, and coverage is bottom level.
Biggest mistake ever getting this insurance! Don't do it!
They don't allow going out of state, even if an exception needs to be made because the nearest "in state specialist" is 5 hours each way (so it's an $$$ overnight trip) The Gastroenterologists who are in CA an hour away, won't accept new pts and/or won't accept covered CA! If I cross into the next state I only have a hour drive and can get an appt within days. So that's what I'll do- I'm going to have to pay out of pocket!
The way this health insurance works is completely unacceptable.
The customer support was also horrible- the woman kept looking up providers in counties I've never heard of- 6 hours away. She didn't seem to be using by zip code or town name. A nightmare all around.
Write your congressman/woman!
I enrolled in January and was told to pick a plan by 2/15/22. I went to pick a plan and my information would not properly input. I called to see what the problem was and I was told by a rep that I missed the deadline and now needed a "Qualifying Event" to enroll. I did not miss the 2/15/22 deadline as I am writing this on 2/14/22. I do not have a "Qualifying Event" and therefore cannot sign up. I am being told I will not have healthcare in the middle of a global health crisis even though I chose a plan prior to the deadline Covered California gave me. DO NOT GO THROUGH THEM. I would give negative stars if I could.
Initially when I filed with this company, even though I am low income, they could not offer me a program that actually addressed my medical needs. Then, after filing for insurance and paying out of pocket for my plan, they canceled my insurance without telling me due to a system glitch. When they tried to fix the issue, they misfiled my case and sent it to the wrong processing center. I had to delay a medically necessary appointment for two weeks now due to their incompetency, and there was ZERO compensation. I am beyond disgusted by this company and recommend to avoid using them at all cost.
I called CoveredCA just today to cancel my 2022 MediCal plan. I am highly grateful for the Department of Health Care Services - CoveredCA program helping people like me that are economically disadvantaged.
Since it is 2022 and COVID occurring, the phone call left me with an unpleasant experience. At the beginning of the call today, the lady was coughing and asked how she can help me. I let her know about canceling my MediCal plan for 2022. That was fine until I asked about my cousin getting MediCal since he recently quit his job.
Somehow, she became triggered or something... and responded rudely (in her voice) saying that is an individual case. She said my cousin will have to talk to her. I responded with okay then I understand. She asked if he wanted to speak with her and I responded with a no that is okay. A few moments of silence... Then she quickly said have a good day and hung up the phone. (Note that this description is different from actually experiencing it without the attitude and irritated voice).
In reflection, I could hear her tone of voice that sounded irritated. For me, I felt like, whoa, I am sorry for asking such a question. I understand it is an individual case but the way she responded made me feel bad for asking such a question. It just sounded like she hates her job and is having a bad or just feeling bad with the whole COVID thing. Note: I will have to be careful in speaking with people as people get so triggered during these rough times of high inflation/costs and mask mandates.
Again, I would say the whole organization and what they are providing is fine (kudos!). However, with the human interaction of speaking with a person on the phone, I would rather not experience that again and feel like a punching bag of some sort. COVID during these times and a few words make people so angry and triggered.
Want to give a big shout out to Antanae for her amazing customer service and dedication for going above and beyond to help me. She not only figured out the issue regarding Blue Shields but, updated my account and made sure everything is accurate going forward. Thank you so much for the amazing experience!
I don't even know why I need insurance when most won't take Covered California plans. Granted I'm paying a dollar a month so beggars can't be choosers but at least offer something that actually is useable. Don't go around parading health insurance for all if it's insurance in name only and no one accepts it. Done looking for doctors who will actually take this crap. I guess I'll keep it till I'm making enough money to afford real insurance so I can not get penalized for not having health insurance cause that's all this seems to be good for.
Im trying to get coverage for myself since medi-ca doesn't cover for anything. I was on a back and forth basis with covered ca and honestly they do not get on the same page. Some said i was good to go others found a problem. Made me upload documents and nothing was getting done. I kept getting different information from everyone and i was just in this overwhelming cycle. It ended up turning out Im not eligible because of my work permit. According to them, DACA recipients isn't a "legal" status.
Honestly, we jump through a lot of hoops to just get DACA alone. And now this?
Trying to get insurance that i need. Im doing everything right and I can't even get decent health coverage without paying more than $350 alone? How can I afford that? How can many afford that, specially with the difficulties this pandemic left?…. So unfair. They keep saying medical can help you, but with them if you aren't basically living off the government, it makes you ineligible?
Im just so frustrated at the outcome of all of this. I pay taxes just like anyone, i work hard for barely making it month, it is super overwhelming that given the circumstances there isn't anything remotely available for DACA recipients.
Covered CA... where you can also get toothpaste, deodorant, and laundry detergent out of someone's trunk. How the hell is this POS still being hired by our tax dollars to service customers? The idiots that work here are prime examples of what happens when you only take half the abortion pill.
No one knows their butthole from their mouth here. My account was deleted 6 times and every time I had to go back in and reenroll and go an entire month with no coverage. No one has any idea why my account keeps getting deleted either. A bunch of drool cup idiots!
Licensed agent Bob worked on my application. I gave him 5 stars for exceptional customer service. Management, you should increase salary him.
Thank you.
I caled on January 28 to cancel my plan. I was granted cancelation. I asked if I would be charged next time. I was told no. I was not informed of the 14 day cancelation policy. Yes I know it's on the website, but I did not know that at the time of the cal. And if I was already on the phone wi a representative, shouldn't they have informed me of their policy?
Anyway, I called again today asking for a refund. But my case couldn't be resolved because according to them I did not explicitly state the date by which I wanted to cancel my plan when I called to cancel it. I think it's pretty obvious that when I call to cancel my plan, that means I want it canceled immediately? Why would I leave it up to the company to decide when I want to stop paying them? I was not informed that I should expect a charge in February because of the 14 day rule, and THEN afterwards would I cease to be charged.
They don't actually give a $#*! about keeping you insured. They just want your money. I wasted hundreds of dollars on insurance this month when I couldn't even use it anymore!
After having insurance throughout 2020, which I later found I could have saved a lot more on, I applied for 2021, ended up with two accounts instead of one, both useless, both took over a month to sort out to make just into one. Then I log in to choose a plan and had to figure it out. So a few days later just a day prior to an expire date, I go to log in, and the page cannot be found! A 404 error, on the signin page! WTF?!? It's one thing after another and I'll probably get penalized for not having insurance when they were the ones that caused the foulups in the first place. Fx$k! Covered CA!
Covered California is a joke of an insurance company. You don't qualify for insurance help unless your already poor, like seriously poor. I submitted our information and knew we wouldn't get financial help but since we needed insurance and our jobs don't offer any we chose them. After submitting information we get several letters stating we make an absurd amount yearly, we don't make a lot for a couple, but we do decently okay. They pulled pay stubs that we haven't gotten in years or no longer have jobs at and they think we make $176,490.20 a year! We've never made $100K a year not even close! I've been on unemployment for almost a year, you think if we made that much I'd be off of unemployment. Not a hard concept to understand, they don't think about what they're putting in for you. They need to just stick to what is given to them, and take from your tax returns if they have questions. It's absurd that they aren't going by the information we gave them, they're taking what they think we still have incomes to. It's ridiculous and they need to do they're job better. What a F*ing joke. Not helpful at all, when you call to speak with someone they aren't helpful and don't speak English. They downloadable scans for documents aren't helpful either, since you can only choose from the menu they provide, one stating they need more information and the other menu that only lists whats available. Neither of them matched what I needed to submit. Next time we will look for a different company to get our insurance from. So lame.
I wish I could give zero stars. Covered ca sent me a letter in late Nov. Stating that they could not auto-enroll me for Jan/2021, stating they did not have enough info in regards to my employment. That had worked in my favor since my employment status had changed, & not for the better. I re-enrolled in mid Jan/2021 for a lower plan, one that I could afford, until I was back on me feet. Covered CA is now trying to STEAL $300 from me, someone who has no form of income, to pay for the month of Jan. The month that I was supposed to have no coverage, the month that I did not use any coverage, even when I got strep throat. I contacted them multiple times about this, 4 of their employees told me that I was fine & will be covered for Feb. But that I should contact Kaiser because are the the ones charging me the $300. Turns out Kaiser was not the issue & covered Ca re-enrolled me for Jan after stating that I was in fact, NOT eligible for auto-re-enrollment. Someone finally sent my issue up to management & I was told I would be contacted. I was NEVER contacted. 24hrs later, I received ONE email that said "we're sorry but your request has been denied, call customer service if you have any questions." I have the letter stating that I could not be auto enrolled in my possession but they refuse to acknowledge it. Their employees have zero idea what they are doing, their managers/supervisors are not helpful whatsoever & they are total thieves. What company that is supposed to provide AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE, lies & steals from people who don't have any money? COVERED CA does.
Trying to figure out how CC determines what's actually affordable for us plebs, so... I have been divorced for 3 years now and a month away from 62 yrs old. I purchased a condo (couldn't afford an actual house) with what money I was left with after the divorce so my mortgage is $2,000 a month (in California this is cheaper than rent, yes, seriously). So far I don't have a car payment but I will soon enough because my vehicle (Honda) has 147,000+ miles into it and not doing well. Continuing... auto insurance is about $450 a month. Home insurance is $250 a month. Utilities are roughly $200 a month. Gas to/from work is about $225 a month. So far that's $3,125 a month in expenses. Now keep in mind there's no mention of expenses for food here yet. State & federal taxes for me is 25%, removed from my pay check. After these lovely taxes my take home pay totals about $4,000 a month (give or take). Now, that leaves me with $875 a month for CC health insurance, food and other essentials but somehow Covered California thinks that I can afford $750 a month in health insurance. I know that others are worse off than I am but seriously how can you (corporate personal) in good conscience charge these outrageous rates to everyone and still consider them affordable? I attached only two of the "quotes" (they are a moving target once you actually press the button to sign up) which range from $649 (Kaiser) to over $1,000 (Blue Shield). This is very sad because my insurance (with my husband at the time) was only $289 a month (yes, total for both of us) in 2008. This current "affordable care act" and the (2) insurance companies (why only 2) are taking advantage of everyone :(
