My husband heard about a service known as BuildZoom who partners consumers with local contractors for large and small scale home remodel projects. He placed a call and was connected with *. * asked several questions about the project scope and indicated he would locate three contractors with excellent references in our area and call us back within a week. He also stated he would make contact with the three companies on our behalf to set up appointments for them to come to our home and discuss our design ideas.
As promised within a week, we received a call from * with three company names. He reviewed the history of the three companies as well as provided reference information. We were comfortable with * contacting all three companies to schedule home appointments.
We only received a call from one of the contractors. We never heard from the other two. In the meantime, we located two other contractors from other resources and felt comfortable with the number of companies we had in line for estimates on the large scale kitchen remodel project.
We met with the one contractor and were extremely impressed with how they listened to our design ideas and offered excellent recommendations to meet our project goals. The next step was to select cabinets and countertop so a bid could be completed and presented to us. We did make our selections.
* called us shortly after the initial contractor visit and asked how we felt about the interaction. We expressed how pleased we were with the contractor as well as the BuildZoom service. Shortly after this communication, all contact with the contractor ceased. We attempted multiple times via phone, emails and texts to receive a status on our remodel project. We also made attempts to contact * and received no responses from him or another representative of the organization.
We have no indication as to where the disconnect occurred and we are extremely disheartened by the lack of communication from *. We can't imagine what type of organization of this nature would drop the ball like BuildZoom and * did.
We would never recommend BuildZoom.

Hi Debbie, I greatly apologize for the gap in communication. I would be happy to address your concerns and reconnect you with one of our project consultants to regain momentum on your project. Please email me at customersupport@buildzoom.com. Thank you.
Build zoom connected me with Solix who did a Great job on our electrical work. Easy and convenient..
We had a difference of opinion of services rendered:
As I gave an overview of my issue to Buildzoom and for them to indicate "premium payments are non-refundable after services are rendered" does lead me to believe that you had a better understanding of my "services" from BuildZoom. That is where we differ, because they did not fully deliver services as described in our project scope.
I had a choice of two other companies and chose your firm based on feedback, customer reviews, fact checking and my first interaction with *. After being punted from * to * team I still felt they understood my highest priority which was to get through the process in 45 days. They assured me that they could get that completed. Then they punted me to * and things didn't go so well with meeting with firms that your company recommended and provided. As stated before, Buildzoom did not do a good job of making sure those virtual meetings occurred on time and the quotes submitted for review and comparisons. I had the timeline of 45 days because I was very clear this was my top priority. Well we had reached 60 day at this point while she was trying to schedule firms and not showing up to begin those meetings and it was 1-2 weeks in-between those meetings being scheduled. I did complain to Trent several times about my timeline. At this point I went to the loan agent to extend my loan application. They agreed to give me 120 days but I told Buildzoom we have another 30 days. Which means you had a total of 90 days to get what we agree on earlier. Buildzoom did not meet that timeline either.
We only had one construction firm that submitted a legitimate proposal. We felt we had to go with that one just to get be able to meet the loan timeline. By the time we got that completed we had only 2 weeks left to complete the load paperwork and was told then that we needed to prequalify again; of which I could not produce paystubs because of my retirement. I would have redo a whole other process to get qualified again. We were so disappointed.

Hi Paul,
Our team was actively in touch with you over many emails back and forth with you over 6 months ago now. The last email we sent indicated on our end how we did complete all items in your project scope including sourcing contractors, bid revisions, and contract administration. We did not hear back from you after sending this email. For ease of access, I will outline again our response to you to try and clarify where we stand in your specific case.
One of our project managers thoroughly reviewed the calls we had with you and did not come across any specific instance of our reps providing a promise or guarantee that we would be able to complete this project on a 45,60, or 90 day timeline. We always hear out our customers and their specific requirements, and mention that we can always try to accommodate their preferences, however, this specifically is heavily reliant on the contractors we source and their timelines and availability. This also depends on where the property owner is at in their pre-construction process. In this case, we needed to get your plans completed for your specific lot.
Your payment for our premium service was for the work done to source and find you a contractor to complete your project, which we did. Our team reached out to 11 contractors in your area, with 1 ending up bidding. The contractors in BuildZoom's database are not employed by BuildZoom and therefore, we are unable to control how and when they conduct their own business practice. Looking back through some of our conversations throughout the project, the team clearly indicated to each other the timeline you were on. If there was no mention or no clear communication about this, I can see your side to this dispute. However, we showed consistency in our urge to get this project over the finish line. Our team was persistent in following up with unresponsive contractors in an attempt to speed things up. Furthermore, there were no stamped completed designs when we first began working on your project, which naturally added an additional layer of difficulty to accomplish this project by your deadline. To recap, this project in full, required designs to be curated and permitted, followed by our contractor bidding process.
All of this said, we did enjoy working with you, and again, if not already done, would recommend refreshing your lending with the institution you were previously working with. Also if you would like another recommendation, we suggest our clients contacting US Bank Home Mortgage (we provided you the contact info in the email).
I found my HVAC contractor on a BuildZoom and can't be happier with it.
Thank you for providing this great service.
Thank you for your feedback! We're thrilled to hear that you found your HVAC contractor through BuildZoom and are happy with the service. We appreciate your support!
I used buildzoom premium to manage contract bidding for an apartment renovation in a NYC co-op unit. The premium team's value proposition is that they will offer a specialized service that does a comprehensive bid review and estimate process. I gave this review a one star instead of a zero because they helped source contractors that I would not have found on my own and they had some generic pamphlets to help first time homeowners navigate the renovation process. These pamphlet pdfs and sourcing services can be found for free and this is where the benefit of the company ends. In my experience, the premium service and team offered neither a specialized nor comprehensive service.
Some premium team support members were not located in NYC so their understanding of NY co-ops was surface level in my opinion. An example was their lack of understanding regarding required involvement of the DOB for a proposed closet wall removal in my unit. The estimates that they worked on with my contractors never included references for a license architect to review demo and alteration plans for a single drywall removal in my bedroom closets. The inclusion of this process inflated my real dollar cost and timelines.
This and other items on my renovation list, such as required window subcontractors, should have been answered and explained with all my contracting bidders. However, it seems they had not contacted my super or the property management company in charge of my co-op leaving my contractor to source this information themselves.
Post contract and service support from the premium team is poor and borderline nonexistent. Once they help you sign a contract your premium team ceases contact with you. Instead you are rewarded and punted to a general customer service email. It has been 3 business days without a response from customer support for the items listed above.
I hope my experience with the premium team and this writeup helps you save your time and money. At the end of the day you need to be heavily involved in the renovation process anyway and no one can do a good of a job as yourself. Buildzoom with their marketing promises might make you think they are an essential piece for the process. They are not.
Hi Jim,
We are sorry to hear that this was your experience with BuildZoom premium.
Two of the contractors we sourced for you (including the winning contractors) included pricing from the SOW your provided to us to "replace and renovate all closet interiors, defer to CO designs/previous completed jobs." While I cannot speak to exactly what happened, the contractors could have assumed that there were already designs they were working off of, from the previous contractor, thus not including basic designs in their bid.
As outlined in your service agreement, BuildZoom does not currently offer post-hire support. It is unfortunately not feasible for us to successfully accomplish since our team is small and bandwidth is limited, although this is definitely something we'd like to be able to offer in years to come. There are certain cases, however, where our construction experts are able to provide advice on the build out of pure goodwill. As for your email to our support team, I am not able to locate anything you've sent to us.
In response to your last paragraph, it is true that property owners need to be involved in the renovation process. BuildZoom does the work behind the scenes in order to make decisions for the property owner easier to handle. Renovation projects, new home builds, and many other types of projects can be difficult to coordinate and many people don't know where to begin. That's where the BuildZoom service becomes the most valuable for the property owner as it does, in fact, save you time and money when seen through to the end.
