I've had a membership off and on with Ancestry for over 10 years. And I've been very happy with them. They've helped me build a tree of over 2000. Their data base is far larger then any other family search site and with less useless gimmicks. My only complaint is how many ancestry members just copy other member's trees without doing the research. Any mistakes in those trees are then repeated over and over again. So be sure to back any info you may find on other member's trees with a reliable source.
As for the high cost of a subscription; well, Ancestry is a tool. Use it if you want your money's worth. As the volume of data in your tree grows, the quality of your hints and your search results will improve. That said however, it will eventually get harder and harder to find new available sources of info. There is only so much out there on your family. That's when it maybe time to take a break and cancel your subscription for awhile. Cancelations will cost you $25 unless you wait to cancel at the end of your subscription. Then it will cost you nothing. If you take the 2 week trial and want to cancel, be sure to do it prior to 2 days before the end of the trial. Otherwise you'll be charged the $25 cancelation fee and the 1st month's membership. That's in the terms of agreements.
My results randomly changed. Large percentage areas disappeared entirely. Other areas i didn't even have in my dna rests, now show. I don't know if i even trust these results anymore.
History should be free. There should not be such an expensive price tag on these items. It is absolutely disgusting. I would give this website 0 stars if possible. I don't leave reviews normally, and yes I understand I sound like a cliché. But I am so angry! I should NOT have to pay anything for history. THAT is what makes people ignorant.
Received a kit from my grand daughter for Christmas 2023. Took the test, registered it and sent it in. Waiting and waited and waited. Went on the site and logged in and nothing. Went to my grand daughters site where she purchased it for me and nothing. She got an email end of February 2023 saying to enter the code for resulte. There is no code except on the vile that was sent in. NO WHERE on the package states the code must be kept ONLY to activate it on their website which we did. This company is a joke. No way to contact them either.
Horrible site. I had all my photos set to private as well as my trees and someone was able to use them. What really has me upset they used my info to create a tree that has my deceased father and sister as another women's husband and child. Horrifying! Stay away or use code names for everyone in your tree. I have requested the removal of at least the pictures of my family members from that users tree (several times) and it's fallen on deaf ears.
I have been very active with my Ancestry profile and have experienced a sense of occasional excitement from newly discovered information, at times. Once the novelty of the site and my activity wore off, I felt like the victim of a "money grab". That being said, some of the information has been shared with me repeatedly has not enhanced my profile. The "supposed" research has not been validated and Ancestry suggests information that has been claimed by random individuals (without DNA match to me) to be relevant without any connection to me on their family trees. I should say also that I have had greater success with FamilySearch and the price of the subscription for the service simply did not offer consistent value.
I paid good money to have my son and daughter do ancestry, and when I went back into our account after a few months their results were no where to be found and our whole family tree was gone. And yes, I was signed into the right account. Waste of money and a scam!
They have a chatbot that does not work and zero support. I have a simple issue with an lost dna test kit but cannot get a hold of someone to discuss.
When signing up I specifically un-checked all memberships and fees. But three months later they take a fee anyway. No direct customer support, just a terrible chatbot. Recommend once you have your results go into you're account and check that ancestry have not added memberships to your account to scam you.
Takes forever to get results back ridculous it is no longer exciting for me to know where i came from
I clicked on a link that lead me to my grandma...my grandma that I've never met, only seen a pic or two of her my entire 51 years of life, and it says there's 33 pics. Gives me a "preview" of them. I click on it, it says LOLOL..."as these pics MIGHT be of (insert name here), we need more information to make sure. All it had was a sliding scale where it says "exact name, similar, broad" etc...I slid the scale on each of the different catagories and it WOULD NOT BRING UP her pics. At all. No matter what I did. Ok here's the long and the short of it. It showed the preview, so I know they exist, (and I know it's her)...but they're afraid to show me because they "might not" be here...but yet it comprises a list of a WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE THAT IT'S DEFINITELY NOT A PIC OF. FOR SURE IT'S NOT THEM AT ALL. But never pulled up the ones of her. WHY? YOU'RE AFRAID I'LL SEE UMMMMMMMM...HER? Because you couldn't possibly be worried about me seeing OTHER PEOPLE, YOU LET ME SEE ALL THEM I COULD POSSIBLY WANT TO, OR NOT WANT TO. So, what's the %^&*(*&^%$^&*( problem, Ancestry? OH I KNOW WHAT IT IS. THIS IS WHAT IT IS. I AM NOT A MEMBER. I DIDN'T PAY FOR THE SUBSCRIPTION. I DIDN'T PAY. YOU'RE BEING GREEDY AND NOT LETTING ME SEE THE GRANDMA I'VE NEVER EVEN MET BECAUSE YOU WANT A FEW DOLLARS IN YOUR POCKET. YOU, SIR/MA'AM ARE A PIECE OF^&*(! I WILL NEVER USE YOUR SITE. I WILL TELL ALL OF MY FRIENDS ABOUT THIS LITTLE TRANSACTION (OR THE LACK THEREOF) AND I'LL PROBABLY EVEN GET A LAWYER. YOU HAVE %^&*i( OFF THE WRONG y^ty&i&*!
Good DNA product, but when signing up I specifically un-checked all memberships and fees. 3 months later they take a fee anyway. No direct customer support, just a terrible chatbot.

They sign you up for auto renewal and take your money as long as they can. Use them at your own risk.
I signed up for a 14 day trial, cancelled, and they charged me two charges (one for a membership of $33) and one for $25 cancellation fee. They argued I signed up for 6 months. SCAM, SCAM. SCAM. AVOID.
I purchased a DNA kit for $100. I was told it would be received in 7-10 business days and never received if. I contacted them and asked that a lot be sent to me, this time with expedited shipping at no extra cost since I had already waited over 2 weeks. They refused and basically told me it was not their problem.
Too many irrelevant searches. Also Ancestry is great for selling your family photos to Google and Pinterest without your permission. Thumbs down.
Ancestry is just a complete unprofessional organization. I was charged on credit card when I had already canceled the membership. When I called to dispute the person on the line was very disrespectful and not helpful at all. -1/10 don't do anything with company. The service they provide is not worth it. It's not informational at all. DO NOT get the membership. Just a complete mess
Long wait time, tried to cancel a kit 5 hours after I ordered it. Told I need to wait for the kit to arrive, having paid a $10 shipping fee to receive it, and then return it for a $15 shipping fee.
Would give it a ZERO if I could.
I have been a customer since 2013 and have enjoyed the countless hours I have spent building my family tree from the information on Ancestry databases. However, my experience today has changed my view on this company. My husband purchased a DNA kit for me last year for Christmas, unknowingly signing up for a subscription when doing so. We have been double paying the subscription fees for almost a year ($344). Customer service discovered this extra account when I called to inquire by running our credit card. Once discovered, I asked about a refund or partial refund on the account that my husband mistakenly created but never used. I was told a flat "no refunds", not willing to meet half way on cost or even refund the 86.00 they just took in just last month! We now have an account until March that has NOTHING in it! My husband did not understand that he was signing up for the "service" and not just the kit. Ancestry.com can see there has never been any activity on that account. Most "service" companies have some exception leeway for instances such as this. Buyer beware/be careful. After reading the reviews on here...this seems more like a mistake by Ancestry design.
I had part of my tree removed twice. Almost 2 weeks worth of research. I complained to CS they didn't read my problem at first then said they didn't do it and couldn't help. The CS agent couldn't spell or type a full sentence. I do not recommend this site. I could do it cheaper using Google.
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
