“Charging renters for hosts repairs”

Annette S.
1/10/24

I had a horrible host experience and he dediced to replace ALL locks and linens at my expense. Airbnb allowed. How do you break TWO locks? I reported one broken BEFORE I left, owner 2 hours away didn't care to come or send local help. Airbnb told me I needed to take photos and videos upon checking in and when leaving to prove conditions! Really? The host/Airbnb client more important than a renter. When they run out of renters, what then? Good luck! My last time for sure

We've stayed in many Airbnb properties as guests over the years and have generally had good experiences, sometimes very good. We recently started hosting however and we've found it to be A LOT of work and people can be quite unreasonable, unhelpful or just unfair in their reviews and comments. One girl damaged our kitchen and left the gas oven on. One adult man and family were perfectly nice throughout the stay and then afterwards complained about the house not being tidy enough or not having space in the wardrobe, even though they got the place for an absolute bargain price. To be honest, after all the work it is to prepare the house, clean before and after and be kind, polite and responsive throughout with communications, this sort of thing is really disheartening and makes me feel quite sad and frustrated. I would say, overall, it's a good system for guests but not good for hosts unless you dedicate yourself to it professionally and full time. Airbnb also can be really slow in releasing payments to hosts, I find, which seems a bit unfair, if they are profiting off the interest they make in the meantime! I hope this review is helpful to some people.

I paid over 100 a night for this trashy Airbnb. They only refunded me 50 even though there were missing Amenities and the conditions were unacceptable. She even listed the wrong address causing me to be on someone else's property for 20 mins with dogs barking at me and my kids. They say Aircover would take care of this but won't explain why I should get $50 when I had to stay in another hotel instead of in this trap house.

I will be writing bad reviews about an experience i had with airbnb in every platform i can find. Because of covid my friends and i had to cancel a trip to brazil back in January. When we called to canceled we were promised $927 back and only received $200. After many calls and headaches showing them proof of what we were promised we didn't get anything. We called talk to a few representatives, some of them really rude and without my concern case was closed and lost a lot of money. For sure i wont be using airbnb after this horrible experience. If i would of know i was losing all this money we would of moved the dates instead but didn't get that option either. A business shouldn't be run like this and specially if the customer had the proof

With this review I would like to warn home owners who are renting out their accomodation through Airbnb.Over a decade I have listed my 2 houses on Airbnb. In my settings I always use the "first enquiry before official confirmation of the rental agreement". This weekend I suddenly got an instant booking on a period which was impossible for renting out. For some reason the settings were changed to "Instant" booking. So I had to cancel the booking. For this I got a € 188,- penalty from AIRBNB.

My first thought was that this for sure was a mistake by Airbnb. But...their final comment is that I am the only one able to change settings. And so I made the change... and have to pay this rather strange fine.

I did some investigation which shows that suddenly also my offline houses were all changed to "instant booking." As being not a real handy guy in changing settings. (It will take a day for me to find where to make such a change) I am quite sure that it was not me who made these changes. I can not prove it but with this the warning to all homeowners to check if their settings are suddenly changed and perhaps respond to this review as I have a strong impression Airbnb does change settings. The reason for it is obvious. Either to gain extra profit by rental fees or by giving penalties for cancellations.

Wrong access code for apartment complex given, host was not able to fix it during my 2 day stay. Unable to leave because of a risk of not able to get inside the apartment complex at night. Ended up leaving the place 1 day early. No refund. Airbnb refused to intervene. This is 2nd time this happened to me. No more airbnb, will use hotels from now on

I have tried to work with Airbnb after a host failed to make everything right after our visit. They did nothing and blamed it on their existing 'policies'. We have pictures, communication and everything. It got us nowhere and no return of any money, or at least housekeeping fee refunded. Beds were not made upon arrival, appliances not working, pool issues, and the list could go on.

Tip for consumers:
I am willing to give them another chance in the future if they improve their service.

Due to my experiences as a host, it is my opinion Air BNB is very derelict in creating a safe platform for Hosts.
I recently had a guest get booked without my usual radar. He arrived with 4 guests vs 2 and lied about the extra people not actually staying. Broke rules about staying up and partying in outside space until 5am. Then on day of checkout wouldnt leave- he finally did 1.5 hours late. I called Air BNB about the
Checkout as my cleaning people needed to get in and clean. They never responded to my call until 3 hours later. As I watched all four of them finally check out- the booking individual took a gun out of the trunk of the car and aimed it towards my property. I have pictures of him doing this. When I finally spoke with Air BNB about this their agent who handles mis conduct cases like this, took my information. I basically requested that the platform remove this individual from the platform so that other Hosts would not have to deal with his dangerous antics. This employee assured me he would protect my identity in this situation and process my complaint. Bear in mind he had a picture of this individual with the gun. He did not need testimony from this person as he had a picture! Dated and time stamped! This agent of Air BNB assured me he would protect my identity. With in hours of expressing my concern about this experience I received an angry text from this guest stating he was angry I told AIR BNB about his actions here with the gun. An Offense that is illegal on so many levels.
In my opinion Air BNB has now created a direct grudge with this individual against me and my family.
He knows where I live and the activities of this property. This agent assured me that he did not reveal
My name when he questioned this individual- which is all he is required to do. Well, this person had only ever booked once with Air BNB and that was with me!
This has unecessarily created a very dangerous situation for me and I have because of this left this platform. I do not recommend it.

Read all the rules and policies first or be willing to accept the outcome.

So many impositions and they have only brought us two bookings in three years! Like google, I don't even think they have a customer service department. Either bots or volunteer hosts answer any inquiries.
Like uber, it blows my mind how a business model based on other people's properties can make these people wealthy beyond recognition.
If you are booking, go directly through the property owners, save money, be respectful and aware of karma.

Tip for consumers:
Don't book through airbnb or any other such platform. You can do better going directly through the property owners.

If you're taking the risk of listing your property on airbnb, PLEASE be very careful and always TAKE deposit from guests especially if they don't have good reviews or a large group.
I've been listing properties on airbnb since 2016. Earlier, they used to take good care of hosts but lately, their TRUST and SAFETY assurance is of no use. They want you to make police complains and harass you so much for paperwork that its impossible to get them to settle any claims if the guest doesn't respond.

I used this service and found the listing for the property excellent and the reviews were nearly five stars. So, I booked. What I found in my experience was something less than five stars, and some improvements were needed like replacing a 13 year old worn out mattress and providing a kitchen with workable not rusty and etched pots and pans. There were other problems. When I contacted Airbnb and the host I was provided about an 80 percent refund. Even after I told them I was settled with the case, my 2 star review was removed by Airbnb because they felt is was retaliatory. I disagree. I provided constructive feedback to the host to improve his property. What I discovered from my experience is that the reviews overstate the property because Airbnb removes negative ones it finds in its words to be retaliatory. I was a new customer with naïve eyes. Beware folks the reviews are slanted strongly towards the positive, and Airbnb and the host are more in pecuniary alignment than with their customers. Beware too how pictures do not tell the full story. You might see a kitchen, but what is exactly in the cupboards.

We rented a property in Jacksonville it's the house hosted by Dexter. We paid $700 for the weekend stay we arrive to the property and there is an intoxicated man sitting on the stairway telling us that the lady of the house is not there at the moment and we could not go in. I called Airbnb immediately because we had children staying with us and was directed by Airbnb to get off the property and go to safety. We did exactly that we did not feel safe. I did an instant book on another property it looked very good went ahead and purchased it. I tried to get my money back from the other property and they said that because I didn't have video of the drunk man that I would not be refunded. Now they're asking me to video of someone on private property. I'm not an attorney but I believe that's illegal and no way were we going to antagonize a drunk man, And that was the reason they're not refunding me. Watch the news right now about what happened on a property at an Airbnb. Seriously it made national news. I cannot say all stays are bad, some of them were amazing. But not knowing the property before you go can cost you a lot of money if it's not a safe spot for you and your family. Because if there is a safety issue they will not, based on my experience, give you your money back. So you either pay for another place or you risk it and stay on the property. We weren't Taking that risk at that time with kids and after watching the news and seeing what happened to the guy at the Airbnb I'm glad we didn't.

Tip for consumers:
We want up using an instant book and luckily we found a better property with guidance from someone in Jacksonville that knew the area. So sorry no words of wisdom here kind of buyer beware thing.

I was given a gift card to use toward my expenses in visiting someone after I had already made the reservation. It turns out that Airbnb will only let you use a gift card at the time you make the reservation and it can't be used to pay any remaining balance. So, it is a gift card, but it isn't really a gift card. Not an honorable business practice.

The host Amy a registered nurse rented me her property and it had rats living inside the basement. One night I ran across the rat as I was coming home from work shortly after 8 p. M I asked for a refund and cancelation and the host said know because I didn't give her a chance to assess the situation. Please beware and do not rent from this property. The host Amy is a light skin African American and she does not believe in doing what's right in my opinion. Please do not be a victim she took $1771 from me.

Tip for consumers:

This modest room was falsely advertised as sleeping 2-3 people
They meant 1 single bed and two single camp beds, so that there was no reading light for the second bed, and no night table. Plenty of room for a double bed, but there wasn't one….
The coffee machine didn't work either because it was plugged into a dead outlet; no kettle for tea either….
Very clean and hostess very nice, just not for a couple and not totally equipped.

Tip for consumers:
That there was no double bed snd no nightstand or light for 2nd gurst

After using Airbnb for years with no problems, when a serious issue finally did occur with one of our bookings, they (Airbnb) were not only unhelpful but rude and disingenuous when contacting them about this issue. They took NO responsibility for this major problem we were having and wasted both my time and money... Would not recommend using their site

Airbnb has hidden fees. Cleaning fees can be huge. My wife and I were looking at one night in a one bedroom apt. $133 as a discounted rate (1 night), plus a $35 Airbnb service fee paid by me as the guest, $110 cleaning fee, and $30 taxes. Grand total for one night, nearly $325. Forget it, found a hotel without all the added expenses. But for long term, airbnb can offer some savings.

Rented a home in Kirkwood section of Georgia. Listed as 2 bedroom, 2 bath, sleeps 5. Complete kitchen to prepare meals. Fireplace. Close to shopping, dining. When we arrived found 3 bath towels in the master bath and 2 in the guest bedroom. Total of 3 renters, there for 4 days. No washer, dryer (which we knew up front) expectation is that we would have more than 5 towels for 3 people for 4 day stay. No hot water water in the kitchen sink... had to bowl water to wash the 2 dinner plates & 4 soup bowls. One medium size sauce pan, 1 small fry pan, and 2 small veg pans. Dishwasher with no cleaning products. 1 roll of paper towel. Fireplace with no wood, no fireplace screen. Day 2 of our stay, no HEAT - temps went down to 36 degrees. No extra blankets in the home. Host was contacted 3 times. Heat was never fixed. Front door handle on day 2 came off in our hands which controlled the access to the home. Contacted host -- sent his Admin person to "fix" never fixed. The purpose of our visit was to see our sons who were flipping a house in the neighborhood. Expected to be able to prepare meals for them during our stay. Thanks to Walmart we purchased additional towels, cookware and paper plates to eat from. Along with a case of paper towels, napkins, can opener. If not for the proximity to where our sons were working. We would have stayed with friends of ours in Roswell. Idea was to be across the street from the Flip property. This stay was horrendous and our refund on a 491.00 was a total of 125.00 NEVER AGAIN. FROM NOW ON VRBO. How this host and home qualified as a SUPERHOST is beyond comprehension. Who is vetting these properties? Renter beware with AirBnB!

I have always loved the Air B&B platform and concept. Almost all my experiences and stays go amazing. Although their customer service is awful. Robot chat online for 10 minutes before you get a phone number. They are in India and seem to be trained to escalate and make you angry so they can have recorded data that you are just an angry person for their lawyers. If you ask them if they are even in the USA they claim your being racist and make political remarks, once you are pissed off they professionally say "We are not allowed to disclose our location". Horrible experience. Bring customer service back to America! Why would I want to do service with a company that won't tell me their legal jurisdiction if they are lawyering up on me?

Refund policy is whatever they want it to be that day. You have to notify them you will harass their hosts in person for a refund.

We recently rented a home* in Ludlow, VT. It claimed to be 4 bedrooms but was only two. It had a $170 cleaning fee but had 30 bags of trash (i. E. weeks of trash) at the front door when we checked-in.
There was zero maintenance done to the front - only entry - walkway which was all ice.
When we tried to contact the owner/host we received no response. Then, prior to checkout we used "resolution center" to try to contact the owner/host. This was a waste of time as the response from Airbnb was, essentially, "too bad". They stated that its up to the owner to provide any refund. In other words, Airbnb offers zero assistance after you use their site to find a decent and clean place to sleep.
We have now opened a dispute via PayPal but that will take some time. And then we may have to dispute the charge through the credit card...
Anyway, I can only recommend you use this "service" if everything is completely up front and the owner/host is someone trustworthy.
*the home was 227 Preedom Hill Road S, Ludlow, VT. Suggest you stay away...

Tip for consumers:
Make sure the host/owner is reputable because Airbnb will not help you in any way.

5 of us stayed in an AirBnb rental a few weeks ago in Split. The add stated air conditioning, safety equipment, towels, soap & shampoo and a washer as part of their amenities. And a pool on premises, which there was. Otherwise, wrong. We received one bath towel per person, one hand soap for the entire apartment, no safety equipment (smoke alarm, CO detector), AC only in one of 3 bedrooms so the doors had to be left open. Awkward. With but one towel per person, you could not wash a towel or it would be wet when needed (scratchy like sandpaper, but towels), and could not have a towel at the pool or beach. The washer broke the first usage and the owners did not try to have it repaired, and told us to pay the entire cost of the washer. That did not happen, but AirBnb did assess a huge fee for the breakage even though it may not have been our fault. The owner Zan was kind, but his mother was responsible for on site issues and was a tyrant. Not having AirBnb stand by customers who have used the service multiple times and paid them lots of money, left us all feeling like we would prefer a hotel with towels, AC, safety equipment, soap and shampoo. Never again.

If someone made a party at your property or made a damage, firs you have to talk with 4-5 airbnb representative from different departments, than you have to proof any damage and then airbnb decline your request with the reason - not evidence of the price for the damaged item and it can take months. Basically Airbnb representative always on the side of the guests. Even the damage deposit doesn't work because Airbnb ALWAYS need the agreement from the guest for use the deposit to cover damage. If someone not fallowing the house rules for sure they doesn't want to pay for any damage. Terrible service.

It's been 2 months since Ive received a payout! I used to love airbnb. It's going downhill quickly!
Super host with a 5.0 rating for quite a while now.
The customer service for hosts is atrocious. I call daily. Same responses. We'll get back to you. Then nada.
Still waiting! About to pull my listing down and recommend other hosts do the same. There has to be a better way!

I used the app to book a weekend. When I received the confirmation and receipt emails, it only showed one night. Their solution to fix this was to re-book the second night. Now I'm getting charged all kinds of service fees and cleaning fees for two different stays. Over $400 for two nights in a $80 room. I know what I'm booking. The host knows what I'm booking. AirBNB claims to know what I'm booking, but they're charging me for way more and won't fix it. The AirBNB rep I spoke with on the phone then said it was my fault for using the app to book instead of using a desktop computer. He read me multiple scripts over and over. It seemed as if he didn't comprehend that he was supposed to get off the phone at some point and actually fix the problem. I don't have high hopes.

Tip for consumers:
