“I'm in Love with Wine.com!”

5/16/20

I was skeptical of wine.com after seeing negative reviews but they have been my favorite thing about quarantine! I've made 4 large orders and even shipped a gift to a friend and it has always arrived within 72 hours. Selection and quality are awesome. I've never had a single problem and highly recommend this service to everyone when the topic of wine delivery comes up.

“Order never received for special occasion for my friend. Site did not care to help”

I ordered something months ago and did not receive it. A customer service rep. From Wine.com mentioned it was in the hands of Fedex, however, it was delivered SIGNIFICANTLY late and way past the occasion for my friend. Wine did not help issue a refund and the rep. Was unknowledgeable and had no clue what she was talking about. In order to get this issue resolved, i had to dispute it with my CREDIT CARD COMPANY, which should only be used as a last resort. What an embarrassing organization.

Placed order. Found out that they are a scam website. Tried to cancel order. They ignored me. Told them that I will simply contact credit card company to dispute charge since they refused to cancel order and they hung up on me.

I wrote earlier that the wine did not arrive, but eventually wine.com did replace the wine. They may it incumbent on me to wait until they recieved proof from their shipper that the wine was either lost or returned to them, which I think is unfair, but then they did replace the wine and eventually, I recieved it. It just seemed like I would have done better to go down to Kroger and buy wine and take it home, much less hassle. However, wine.com did make it right and I would like the record to reflect that.

Tip for consumers:
A lot of this review is due to the fact that Fedex steals packages in my area. If your delivery person is more honest than mine you may not have a problem at all using this vendor. I think this issue is pervasive and wine.com has protected themselves from loss by making it the buyers responsibility to wait until the issues are resolved. But ultimately, THE PROBLEM IS WITH FEDEX.

UPDATE: I have ordered from them a few times since, without issue. I found that it's best to place small orders of just a few bottles at a time so that if one bottle is out of stock it doesn't cause your entire order to be delayed for no apparent reason. I am updating my previous review of 2 stars to 4.

I placed a couple of orders in the spring of this year, and all went well (except for issues with FedEx, but that's a different story). But now, I have placed an order that was supposed to be delivered two days ago and according to their website it hasn't even been shipped yet. I see now that there are tons of negative reviews for them in recent months. I tried to contact them for an update but I just get a canned response which still says that my expected delivery date is two days ago! I guess something bad has happened to this company (are they in the middle of the forest fires?) and we may never see our orders! Oh, well, so much for their year-long "steward' membership. Money wasted, apparently...

Tip for consumers:
If you're a member of their steward program and so shipping is free anyway, order your wine in small quantities of just a few bottles at a time because stockouts of just one bottle will delay your whole order with absolutely no reason why or when it will be resolved. So, space out your orders into multiple deliveries to avoid the problem and to prevent YOUR stock-out (of wine in your home)!

My StewardShip membership renewed on May 24,2023. A May 5 email which was sent to remind it was scheduled specifies "Free standard shipping on every order". This what I expected and agreed to when I permitted the scheduled auto renewal. I did NOT agree then, nor do I agree now, to pay $10 shipping for any order under $49. I did NOT receive a subsequent email clearly communicating this change nor giving me the option of discontinuing the StewardShip membership and getting a refund for the remainder of the year from renewal. I would not have agreed to renew if this change was made known at the time of the May 5 "Wine.com StewardShip Renewal Scheduled" email. I purchased the renewal with the expectation that I could order one or two bottles of relatively inexpensive wine without paying for shipping.

I attempted to remedy this problem by calling and emailing customer service. They were not helpful over the phone and said no refund for the remainder of my membership could be issued because I had "used the membership" (meaning I placed orders after the renewal). Why would I renew if I didn't plan to continue placing orders with the company? After a cookie cutter reply within 15 minutes of my initial email, my response to that email went unanswered for 10 days. I called customer service again today, this time getting to speak with an apparent "manager" who spouted the same ridiculous line about not being able to do anything because I "used the membership". Furthermore, she said they have the right to change their membership terms at any time.

This is bait and switch behavior which should not be tolerated.

The review "Stars" for wines on wine.com are not credible. Customers cannot write a review of wines.

Tip for consumers:
They do not allow customers to leave a written review so the "star" ratings on the wines available are not credible.

I have been ordering wine from wine.com for about 5 years now, maybe 6 years. For part of those years, I was a Stewardship member (free shipping for an annual fee). I have ordered Bordeaux futures as well as wines they have in stock. This is a summary of my experience with the company.

Website: 5/5 stars. Their website is by far the best website for finding information about wine. They have a tremendous number of wines in stock, and they contain not only information about that particular wine and vintage, but also information about the vigneron and other wines produced by that vigneron. They post the reviews of all the major wine reviewers, and you can see what the ratings were for that particular wine during other vintages - even if they do not have that wine in stock. Their layout is super helpful and pleasant. Their filtering options are above average. I disagree with some of their categorization of wines (e.g., some wines should be Rhone rather than Languedoc, etc.), but that is a rare issue.

Pricing: 3/5. Generally, wine.com has higher prices that elsewhere. Bordeaux futures are comparable. If I use a 10% case discount and utilize my Stewardship membership, the price is roughly equivalent to what I would pay locally with the high Chicago taxes. However, this is when I buy a case of wine. I don't find buying less than a case economical unless there is a 10% > $200 coupon or something with the free shipping membership. There's probably an overhead and a desire to make a profit here, but that's OK. This is just an assessment of their competitiveness in terms of pricing.

Phone App: 4/5. The App (at least the android app) is almost as functional as the website. It is a little buggy at times, but it has the basic functionality that the website has with the addition of using a barcode scanner and camera to search for wines. When I am in local stores in Chicago, I typically use the wine.com app to look at prices and ratings.

Customer Service: 3/5. I've had a mediocre-to-above-average experience with customer service reps. The wait can frequently be long, and if you're not looking for recommendations and want to ask questions about your order, shipment, etc., sometimes they can be helpful; sometimes they are not. This can be frustrating, but I don't frequently have to involve customer service.

Shipping 5/5. I've had about 30 cases of wine delivered over the years. One case was substandardly packaged (they forgot the top casing that stabilizes the wine bottles upright). I informed them about it, and since none of the bottles were damaged (ha! California cabs and their thick glass bottles), there was really no recourse. The first time I ordered, I had them send it to my home. This was a major disaster since my wife and I weren't home the three times FedEx attempted to deliver, and I had to pick it up at a regional FedEx store. I don't consider this to be a wine.com problem, rather a FedEx problem. If people are complaining about the delivery, they should complain to FedEx -- the company actually delivering the product. Certainly neither FedEx nor wine.com can be blamed for the fact that an adult >21 is not home to sign the receipt. Certainly wine.com cannot be blamed for a FedEx delivery man who just drops the case on the porch without a signature. Since that first occasion, I had FedEx deliver to Walgreens, and I just pick it up at my convenience. Yes, it would have been nicer to have it delivered to my home, but sometimes we're just not home when FedEx comes by. Now, since I am a member at a wine storage facility, the deliveries are managed by them and the wine goes into my storage locker. I've checked all the boxes -- never damaged and always complete.

COVID Issues: Come on, folks. During a global pandemic when people are sick or dying and when all these government regulations are being enforced and shipments of all kinds are being delayed, you're going to give wine.com a 1/5 star rating because it took a few extra days to deliver your wine? You're going to complain that it took a couple of weeks to process the order and ship it? Ok, I get that it's an annoyance, but we're not talking about the delivery of flour, toilet paper and water -- those, you know, essential things in life. If you need your bottle of wine now for a special occasion and it is time sensitive, go to a store and pick it up or something equivalent. If wine.com is the only place that has that very special one bottle, plan ahead.

I order from a few other on-line retailers, and I've never really had any issues with any of them. The longest one took was about 6 weeks, but I was ordering from a mom & pop wine shop in Connecticut. I think I would be scared to order from wine.com if I had read all these reviews first, but that's not the way it happened. They have issues, but their selection is excellent. Their pricing is OK. Their customer service is so-so. But, they make ordering wine exceptionally easy -- especially in a state that is a national disgrace, regulation heavy and a nightmare to live in (Illinois).

Never delivers on time. A package that was supposed to be delivered to NJ never arrived. The package originated from a Wine.com warehouse in NJ only had miles to deliver the item to the recipient in NJ. Fedex decided to ship the NJ bound package to California. They refuse to help, charge my account and are unable to put me through to a supervisor. I basically was charged $60 for items that will never get delivered. Wine.com customer service offers no solves -- horrible way to treat a long customer. If I could give a negative star review I would. They don't even deserve a 1 star.

Multiple instances of when wine does not reach at time. I stopped sending out wines during CHristmas just for that reason and switched to birthdays - and that too has been consistently delayed. Not sure where the problem is. The customer service person just read me the rules. I got the free shipping service - and that is not refunded if used even once. My advice: Find another wine merchart.

So I order every year a bottle of Cristal for a family member. I went to wnie.com and it stated you get 20% discount for purchases over a certain dollar amount. The Cristal is $390 so obviously I deserved the discount however when I went to checkout, it would not apply the coupon. I called customer service and this is truly a hularous excuse...customer service said that if a product price ends in 97 as the Cristal is 399.97 then they cannot apply a coupon if shipped to california because yes the price ends in the two numbers 97. What a joke! I'm like okay so why is it not priced at 99 cents, Frankly I laughed and hung up. Will never buy from wine.com again. A total SCAM!

As of Sunday 12/11, they increased the pending charges to 4 of $79.99 and 4 of $27.81. I ordered one gift basket and one bottle of champagne as a gift. It looks like both have shipped but unfortunately not together. The person I am gifting will receive these two items on different days instead of together. I hope the gift basket makes up for the crappy service. My pending charges have been removed as of this morning 12/12 so that's a plus. I will update from one star to two stars. Still do not recommend.

I placed ONE order on 12/7/22 at 9:53 PM for $107.80. I wake up to 6 charges on my credit card for a total of approximately $300. Two for $79.99 and 4 for $27.81. I contacted the company to find out why so many pending charges. She tells me its because they want to make sure I have enough funds on my credit card. I tell her this makes no sense and I want to cancel my order. She says I can not cancel my order because it is being processed. I literally just placed my order 7 hours prior. I called my AE and thank goodness, they will help if all 6 charges are processed. I would not recommend this company. I wish I had read the reviews prior to placing the order.

I received a partial holiday company gift from wine.com. I know it was partial because my invoice says there should be two items but only got a small box. I sent them a message inquiring about my order and they told me they will send out the missing item ASAP. Well its been three weeks and nothing has arrived at my door. When I responded to their email to ask for a tracking number, they blocked me. I then reached out to the support team and they said that they can't help me.

Ridiculous. Way to ruin someone's holiday!

This company is horrible. I bought a bottle of wine from them three weeks before Valentine's to give to my husband on Valentine's day. They email me a few days before the occasion to tell me "Sorry but its sold out." How was I able to order it in the first place, receive a order confirmation & then a tracking # to only be told after all of that, that it was sold out! Ridiculous & very unprofessional.

Wow! I see they have many bad reviews. Makes sense then I am having to do this. They float a free shipping code that is attached to a membership. They keep it separate, but I am sure there was some little pop up I missed. So when my order came they charged me for the membership, which gets you free shipping. I called CS and said I didn't want the free shipping or the membership, so bill me for shipping and refund the balance from the membership to me. Oh NO, you can't do that. You are stuck for a year with the membership. WHAT? You can't subtract shipping ($16.99) from the membership fee ($69) and give me a refund of $52? Nope, they won't do it.

I've had several orders processed correctly. Last try, the order seems to be 'stuck' in their system. Email to customer service, no reply. Chat, 'the order has been sent to the warehouse.' Phone, forget it. How tough is it for a human to notice that an order is not being processed? It's been 2 weeks since it was supposed to be delivered and it's not left their warehouse. Insanely bad customer service. Avoid this company.

This was both my first and last order with this company. They sent me a $13 bottle of pinot noir instead of the $50 bottle of champagne I actually purchased. The customer service (live chat in particular) is abysmal, they don't care at all. I was told I need to jump through hoops to fix their mistake:

- Email a picture of the incorrect bottle
- Be at my home, when it's the holidays and I'll be elsewhere, for them to pick up the incorrect bottle
- Wait for them to receive the bottle before they'll even send me what I actually paid for

This speaks volumes about this "service." Please spend your money elsewhere.

Tip for consumers:
Avoid this site. They do not value their customers and seem to have little concern about shipping incorrect orders (they'll make it your problem to fix it, too).
