preferred over pandora - after finding that pandora really wasn't suggesting any particularly fresh or new bands, i turned to last.fm. last is user-friendly and chock full of good bands and songs, without being repetitive in its suggestions. you can allow it access to your music folder and play songs straight on last.fm. each new track shows you a couple of other bands you might like that aren't necessarily in your library yet. i've found a handful of new bands in one sitting, everything from chamber pop to folk to shoegazing to rock and on and on. each piece of feedback that you provide, whether you love a track or ban it, seems to be taken into consideration.
I have been with last.fm for 4 years. I have over 200,000 scrobbles. I love how it has my own hit list. Tells me what bands I listened to the most that week. What song I listened to the most that week. Then there is an overall list of my listens. They have radio that caters to me. My Sprint Hero has an app and I can listen to it when I don't have a radio or my Ipod. This is one of those sites that is just perfect.
I like that you can set up groups and it'll run group lists. I watched this site while American Idol was going on this year and it pretty much helped guess who was going to go home based on how many listens they were getting. Kris and Adam were the top two the entire season.
This is a great site for those that love music.
I have not used the forums. I think that I looked at them one time and I'm not into many forums because they don't look comfortable for reading and posting.
i agree. although other folks try to convert me to slacker, pandora or grooveshark, i just really like last.fm's interface and scrobbler. i also am not the kind of person who likes to lose all my ratings/scrobbles.
I agree. The idea of losing my scrobbles, kills me. ha.
Great music site.
Simply type in an artist you want to hear (after making a free account) and you can hear your favorite music and similar music. With FireFox you can install it as an add-on so you can listen to it anytime without having to leave the page you are on.
It also is nice since you can love or hate songs so they will never play again or more often. If you have an Xbox 360 w/ a gold membership you can link you fire.fm account and listen to the music on your 360 with the additional bonus of seeing pictures.
Awesome!
If you find my review helpful, please send me a Thank You and rate it!
I just downloaded firefox but can't figure out how to do the add on. But I love trance and have been listening to last.fm. Can you tell me how to install firefox add on? I would be sooooooo thankful :)
Hi Kristi!
Sorry for the very late reply! To get add ons on to Firefox, simply go to the top, click "Tools", click "Add ons" and then search for Last.fm!
If I really want to listen to some new music while I'm working and I don't want to pay attention to how I get it (ie, read articles) I use Last.fm. For me, it's better at finding obscure new music than Pandora. Although I find some of the pay upgrade prompts annoying (you have to pay if you want to hear a radio station based only on your favorite songs) and you have to download a client, which often crashes on my Windows Vista. Net net - not bad.
Used to like it before. Then they started charging quite a high price for their service.
A truly great source to find new music. I love the scrobble feature that they offer and their recommendations and neighbors are right on the money. The radio station that they offer are brilliant and I could really not ask for anymore. This is a great resource for any music lover!
Last.fm is better for finding new music than Pandora - I hate downloading things, but the Last.Fm client is worth it. It keeps track of all the music you listen to on your computer and then plays songs for you based on those preferences. I also like Pandora, but Last.Fm has a larger variety of new music suggestions (indie rock, bluegrass, whatever).
An ongoing music recommendation database - "Last.fm" (once known as "Audioscrobbler") offers media player plugins to its users. These plugins, which can be installed onto iTunes, Winamp and others, will monitor and record the ID3 data of any MP3 played by that media player. This is uploaded to a large database, which finds other users who have played the same tracks and recommends you new musical artists based on their databases. You can even download the Last.fm Player and listen to sample songs by your recommended bands. I have used this service since September of 2005, and it has never ceased to be a source of new music for me.
Excellent website if you're in the states. Tonnes of free music. You'll love this if you are a fan of European Techno since there are tonnes of people streaming it.
I love it, love it love it! All favorite compositions in one place, playlists and cool suggestions! Thank you last.fm!
I love the search algorithm for this site! Once you type in a band, it will rank resulting bands based on how similar their sound is and will display in a very clean, bold user interface. Every band's profile consists of not only their music and bios but upcoming concerts as well! Its great when you can find all the music info that you need in one place.
I think I like all the other ones beside this one.. pandora and iheart radio rock! I give them this much credit. I thought it was cool when they first came out. It's not as cool as how it use to be since all these other guys came out with better features and stuff..
I used to use pandora until they started charging money to use the site and then I heard about last.fm. Not only is it free but it is a better engine as well. Say goodbye to pandora, last.fm I think will win this battle of the music discovery platform
Other than having to download the player, last.fm is by far the best site to discover new music. And I have all my friends on it now so we can share what we like and don't like. I can't get enough.
It is so pathetic those videos LAME those people need to start a website on country musi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent website; I just wish the blimmin' Last.fm bear would let me listen for more than half an hour at a time without signing up.
Yeah I like it but I don't like how xbox 360 has monopolized it. I prefer YouTube - well - I preferred Youtube - before Vevo monopolized it.
Unlike other websites, last.fm provides users with the ability to reach out to new artists while listening to music that suits one's own tastes. I have found many different songs that I enjoy through this website and feel that it has helped me become more informed with the artists that I like to listen to. It's great being able to listen to commercial free music while giving money back to the bands through the advertisements and last.fm does a lot for the music industry for recognition.
I liked last.fm when it was free, although they repeat the playlists over and over again. I found this free website: http://www.tv243.com very useful to find similar artists and bands
Great source for music, I love their features so much i bookmarked them. hehe
