If you're new to VO and trying to figure out the industry and your "niche" I would recommend NOT using this website. It really only benefits top talent and people who have been in the business/acting long enough. Its quite unfortunate how the websites algorithm works. When you audition for a job, those clients ether "like" your proposal/audition or they don't. The more "likes" you get the higher your rating is on the website. The higher your rating % is, the sooner Voice123 sends you proposals to audition for. If your rating is high then you get first chance at auditioning or just a chance. You can also spend more $$$ on a higher membership to achieve this as well.
If you get no "likes" then your rating % goes down based on the number of proposal you submit to "likes". As your rating goes down, the later you get proposals. You might get proposals sent to you between 11pm - 5am and they only have 3 hour left until the project closes and the proposal quota is already filled. You can see how this could hurt new VO talent from growing. You also can not see if or which proposals clients "like" so you have no idea which direction to go in for performance. I myself was auditioning for everything and trying to see what stuck and what clients like. That hurt me in the long run. I was told that this industry is a number game. Voice123 disagrees and has all the leverage.
I imagine if you are top talent or know what you're doing, this website is for you. Just trying to save some time and cash to the new VO talent out there. Stick with Voices.com or the other p2p websites.
Have used Voice123 for several years now, and book fairly consistently (once or twice a week average). I use Voices as well, and between the two, this is my primary source of income.
The website overhaul done towards the end of 2018 was such an incredible misstep. Despite being completely user unfriendly, their rating system has been done away with, and replaced with simply a "like" button. The four star system before was flawed as well, but at least it incentivized you to audition for everything you felt suited to. Now it's percentage based. Meaning if I audition for ten jobs that are well suited to me, but only one client clicks "like", I'm at a 10% quality rating. A client can even HIRE me but not click like (many don't use this feature at all), which makes it look like my audition was poor quality or not suitable.
Before the site change I was in the 80-85th percentile of voice talent. Now I've fallen to the bottom 50%. This is because I audition for nearly everything that comes into my inbox, unless I know I'm not particularly suited to it. Their recommendation is to audition less, but HOW can I know which jobs may use the "like" feature and boost my rating?
If you expect us to pay $400 to access auditions, it had better be more than 1-4 a day. Many of us make a living from these sites, and have time to devote to sending quality auditions. Limiting who we submit to doesn't benefit us, or the clients asking for good submissions.
If nothing changes in 2019, I'll be leaving.
I decided to add V123 to my P2P lineup as I get a LOT of work from the others I have subscribed to (I made back the fees in less than a week for the others) but I have asked for a refund after they decided to upgrade' their site. For some reason their algorithms have changed and I only get notified once the auditions have been OVER-filled. So the auditioners want 50 auditions and I get an email and go look IMMEDIATELY and they have 100 submitted auditions. This didn't happen until AFTER the new, useless, clunky interface. So buyer beware. Utilize the one month trial period wisely.
In my everyday life, no matter where i go, everyone that talks to me says the same thing
"man your voice is awesome, are you doing anything with that voice? Man you should narrate or something with that voice" etc. So how is it after 107 auditions on voice123 no one, i mean no one has contacted me? Not even a "hi sir we like the voice can you
A)rerecord because we are picking up noise
B)speed up or slow down the reading etc...
No one has contacted me on any of the 107 but they have all open them. If im paying $395 a year you would expect to hear something...
On their review page are two guys that have a five star review that hasnt been active from 2011, but they have it as their top review. With over ******* voice actors on their web site, Voice123 is making 10million a year. With that being said where are my auditions going? I was told by their customer service rep that they have many case where "clients" will take the work of voice actors and not pay them. Tell me, doesnt this seem shady?
As a voice-over talent, I've been actively using Voice123 for little over half a year now. During my time with the site, I've required the assistance of their customer support team on several occasions. The latest of these interactions had to do with the issuing out of a particular document on behalf of Voice123 to serve as proof of a financial transaction between the site and myself. As always, a dedicated customer support representative handled the request with utmost professionalism and in a timely manner. Their personalised approach transforms the dreaded ticketing process into an inclusive and user friendly experience. Both thumbs way up!
Overall, I'm really not too impressed with Voice123 anymore. I've been a paying member coming up on two years now - the $395 per year premium membership.
They recently changed their interface and it's even more complicated than it was before, and it was clumsy to begin with... Many times, relevant information is missing from the clients as well - they want a quote but there are no word counts, missing audition scripts, bad links to project pages, etc.
You'd think that the staff at Voice123 would be more diligent in reminding the clients of this. Most of the time I'm constantly having to reload their projects page because of a "Network Error" connectivity message with their logo attached to it. Weird...
Now, I have been awarded work off of Voice123 as a premium member but I really don't feel that I've gotten my money's worth of Access to all of the available auditions posted. They have this strange algorithm which only allows me to receive Some invites to the posted auditions.
And, more often than not, by the time I get invited to audition for a project Way too many have been submitted already. Additionally, I note that many times more auditions are submitted per project than the client requested which I find odd.
I suppose if I paid their higher membership fees I might get invited to more and sooner, but I'm not doing that.
Now, the people I've spoken with on the phone at Voice123 are very nice, but they've never been able to adequately explain how their convoluted invite algorithm actually works to me. Or, more to the point I mentioned above, it's probably very simple - if I paid them $888 per year, the more invites I'd probably get and I'd probably get to audition first as well.
I believe they should charge one rate for membership, post all auditions publicly and allow the Voice Talents to compete for them all across the board and leave who gets awarded the job to the client.
Interestingly, the majority of work I've gotten from Voice123 is from clients who've listened to my profile samples and contacted me directly bypassing the audition process altogether. So, in this regard, I may leave my profile up, but I'm not inclined to renew my membership this year.
I have been a member, under both free and paid plans. I have been a paid member intermittently and have seen the changes over time, which unfortunately are for the negative. The system changes they use contribute to a downward trend to individual workers as well as the industry as a whole. Overall, I would not readily recommend this site to others, and would not look to renew my membership after it's time has been completed.
Updating for 2022:
Still don't recommend. From a fellow working VO friend's advice, I tried restarting my membership in a higher-paid tier. The way they've adjusted their auditions means that everything is more saturated than before (as long as you pay, you can audition, even past the requested number a client puts in). Some clients request 50 auditions, and by the time you receive the post, they're already at 70+!
Meanwhile, the quality of clients and work have gone down. There are SO many requests for vastly underpaid audiobooks (e.g. Asking for 10's to 100's of 1000s of words for a few hundred dollars) or to use your voice for AI with no future rights or percentage, at a very low price. AND their ranking system continues to work against you! Basically, you get marked down for auditioning but not getting chosen, which of course is more likely when again these clients are getting bombarded with auditions, and you're getting sent less opportunities with real openings.
The lack of quality control makes the website feel even more like it's going toward the trend of collecting money for itself while contributing to a downward spiral for any kind of standard quality VO industry. Very disappointed and currently cannot recommend in good conscience.
2020: Unfortunate that many problems that plagued my original year of using Voice123 have persisted, only seeming to get worse. Returning after a year or two of taking a break, I found that the new system is worse in providing opportunities. The rating system seems more volatile, and I shot from Bottom 50% to Top 30% to Bottom 30% in consecutive weeks, and am now only receiving 1-3 auditions a day. This is a very low amount when most of the better gigs are already slanted to their established VO Platinum tier, and the automated system often gets the ones you receive wrong (asking for a specific ethnicity or accent that the profile is not specific enough to catch).
They sell it as if it's an easy way to make money. You need to spend thousands of dollars on equipment and have lots of experience.
Don't bother.
I book 4-6 auditions a week through Voice123, which contributes about $55K - 60K to my yearly VO income. And about half of of my returning clients have come via prior Voice123 bookings.
I *adore* the background write-up by the owners. SO TRUE!
BUT IF YOU'RE NON-UNION - you'll have a better chance at this.
I will say they're honest and up-front when asked Q's. That was refreshing.
After setting-up my page and clicking "SAG-AFTRA" (which is just a square option; it doesn't note how little work is out there...) I started getting hits sent to my email by their logarithmic system for NON-Union, and African American boy VO's (I'm a Caucasian female with NO African American voices on my reel.). And then after asking about why I was getting Non-Union hits and work for ethnicities that were not on my VO Reel, I was informed Union work was only 2% of what they do, and they "currently don't filter by race or accent"...! VO IS race and accent -!
So FYI - UNION is only 2% of the jobs on this site.
And their logarithmic system doesn't filter by race or accent. (!)
I asked to speak to the amazing owners. And was informed they no longer have a hands on approach at this time. Everything they wrote about the big wigs blocking the sweet Tania Zapata owner - is what I've been experiencing with Union Agencies. And now this program.
Bummed.
They changed the way they process your audio- the audio you have produced and edited- they take it and change it. When I asked about the changes, they lied about what they did to process it. First it was denial denial denial. "No we don't do anything to process your audio." Blattent lie. I wrote a letter to Rolf the CEO eventually after not hearing back from customer service for weeks. Rolf ignored me as well- have never gotten a response from him to this day. Marianna does not know what she's doing or talking about. In short: THEY DO NOT GIVE A HOOT ABOUT THEIR PAYING CUSTOMERS! They ignore and ignore and lie and lie. Finally I got someone from the tech team to email me after 6.5 weeks of inquiry and admit they they are in fact changing audio submissions. The whole message was a joke though- He told me if I didn't like what they are doing to my audio, then I should spend 1000 usd on a neumann microphone. What nonsense! Though I have gotten work from this website, I absolutely can't stand this company or their so-called "customer service" and will never give them my money again. Apparently many many other customers dislike them so please, HEED THE ADVICE and steer clear of frustration. You have MANY other choices for p2p if that's the direction you want to take your career.
I just signed up with Voice123 2 days ago so my only reference can be for the team that helped me with all my questions. Very grateful for the help!
This freelance platform tries to scam you by forcing you to pay a membership if you want to submit a proposal EVEN IF YOU'RE DIRECTLY INVITED BY A CLIENT. It's absurd.
This site very good in everything. I'm working Voice over in this site and I feel like with the site.
I got project invitation but I send the wrong project, so I contact the admin and they fix the problem and correct the project.
A hot mess. This newly revamped" website, is awful. Of my last 75 auditions, maybe 3 have even been opened. Not recommended.
Voice 123 Support hung in there with me as I tried to resolve a recording issue, consistently excellent
I'm a French vo and have been working for a few years now through Voice123 and I must say it's quite worth it, at least for me.
Es maravilloso sentirse parte de esto. Cuando crees que tu experiencia y trabajo es suficiente, te das cuenta de la cantidad de extraordinarios profesionales que colaboran para que te esfuerces en mejorar. Ese es mi reto, al menos.
