I have used Taxact (Deluxe plus package) for years and always thought they did a good job. This year I got a letter from the IRS and Taxact would not help me with an amendment. The Taxact software made a mistake on trading losses; it used the entire amount of my losses and not the $3,000 limit... so now I owe the IRS. :(
After paying for the return and looking at it, I knew something was wrong, I did it myself and had to pay $285.00 less then what taxact said I had to pay, and there is no way to contact them to try and get my money back, I would never use them again.
I used to love taxact until they automatically charge you for Deluxe for $12.95. If you click on one deduction; even if its just to get more insight into how that deduction topic could benefit you; and then you click on a 2nd deduction topic, you're automatically upgraded to deluxe and you must pay with a credit card at the completion before they would allow you to e-file.
I reviewed other e-file sites that's 100% FREE and went with a different site.
My bill when I went to file and print my return they automatically wanted to charge me $154.90 for services that I had not agreed to and was then charged an additional $54.95 for my LA State tax for and when I tried to print it they advise that forms for paper filers were not available. I called customer service and was told I cannot file electronically or by paper files as they did not have the state forms in either print or electronic.
These guys are nasty sneaks. They use bait and switch claiming it will cost < $10 to efile both IRS and Ca state. I got to the end of the process, and TaxAct pops up a message that says my return is no longer free, instead it will cost $8 for Federal and $15 for California state to efile OR PRINT.
I was stuck, so I decided to just efile the Federal, then printed it and used that to free efile the state through the FTB website.
The interviews are also poorly structured and you get asked the same thing over and over again. Would not use again.
Successfully used TaxAct Premier edition and submitted Federal and State returns for 2019; HOWEVER I had to change my password EVERY TIME to log in. (And since the last four passwords are remembered I had to have at least 5 passwords to keep track of.) Customer support, both by chat and telephone (more than once) suggested it had to be a browser problem. They refused to acknowledge that the problem could be with TaxAct; I believe it had to be.
I tried the following: three different browsers (IE 11, Chrome, Firefox), three operating systems (Win 10, Win 7, Ubuntu 16), turned off automatic fill-ins, cleared saved passwords (for TaxAct), incognito browsing, cleared historical data (cookies), cleared cache, removed/reinstalled Chrome and Firefox, everything customer support suggested and more, all to no avail.
I am totally dissatisfied with TaxAct, but would use it next year if the company if they would show any indication that they care about solving the problem. BUT THEY'RE NOT.
I have used taxact for several years now and have actually enjoyed it. However this year, I was WHAMMED with a huge fee to use it. I have used the free version almost every year, I do believe I purchased deluxe two or three years ago at $29.95. I have used a few of the itemized deductions every single year. NEVER have I been charged extra for that. This year, thinking it was free as always, I get to the end to file and not only am I charged $54.95 because I did itemize a few things and could not file unless I paid that amt, but the state is ALSO an EXTRA $54! OVER $100 plus the $10 it costs simply to have the money put from government into my account. LAST TIME I USE THIS!
