Pat's work is nothing short of incredible. The results stand for themselves and cannot be denied. What I think leads to his work being so good is that he truly cares about the process and the results. He worked with me on what I wanted and discussed many details before committing to a plan. My guitar came out BETTER than I expected. You can tell he has passion for seeing your dream realized by his hands. Don't hesitate to entrust your axe with him, you cannot be disappointed.
You simply can't trust what Pat says regarding when you will get your instrument back. It took almost a YEAR to have my guitar returned. I would call or text to inquire about status, and got an ever expanding set of lies and stories as to why my guitar was not complete. It took me calling and texting daily to finally get my guitar shipped. Stay AWAY!
As many have stated, the quality of work is not an issue, but as many have stated, the customer service, communication, misdirection, lies, and turnaround time is absolutely an issue. I had to open a formal complaint with PayPal to reverse payment which is the only thing that motivated him to contact me - and when he did reach out, he was ridiculously contentious, and unprofessional.
I will NEVER work with this shop again. Buyer beware, you've been warned! The BBB should shut this shop down.
Bought a guitar from Patrick SIms in early 2010 & its one of the best playing guitars I've ever played. Very nice attention to detail, fret work was absolutely perfect, paint job was super slick, and it sounds amazing & is perfect for the type of music I play. I still have the guitar & it has become my main guitar. I would have no problems dealing with him again, and plan to order another guitar from him towards the end of the year.
This is the guitar Jaime De Leon is referring to, a Sims Double Cut Carved Top. He purchased 8 guitars from us over the course of about 4 years. Unfortunately he passed away several years ago.

I sent Patrick My guitar to be finished after severe scratching and runs in the original paint job that I had done locally, he smoothed off the surface, remove the scratches and laid a mirror like finish in metallic blue on my guitar, even in direct sunlight it is flawless. Well worth the wait
Could not be more pleased with my entire experience in dealing with Sims Custom Designs. After a lengthy search I finally found an absolutely stunning body blank with which to build a custom '51 Precision bass. Given how long it took to secure the material, I was extremely wary of entrusting it's finishing with just any shop and thus spent a considerable amount of time speaking with a large variety of candidates. From the very first time we spoke it was abundantly clear to me that Pat Sims was the obvious choice. He was tremendously helpful in listening to what I was looking for and offering design suggestions. His attention to detail was readily apparent and I was immediately convinced I was making the right choice in selecting him. Despite all of that, I was NOT prepared for seeing the final result in person- it is truly a work of art. Wow-wow-WOW…
Great work from Sims! We needed them to refinish a Jaguar body and they did a great job - stayed in contact throughout and the final product came out amazing. Will be happy to use their services again in the future - thanks again!
I met Patrick over the phone about 7 months ago or so and on the basis of one call I sent him three guitar bodies to refinish. The colors for two of them were classic colors from the '50s and they are beautiful. He took a lot of care keep the wiring routes unobstructed and clean, which is huge. The colors are magnificent and the care that he took to not only finish them but hold on to them until the weather was warm and calm enough that he could ship them with no fear of checking or getting lost. I won't hesitate in the future to send more projects to him as they come up. Great to deal with, worth waiting for and very satisfying.
Pat did an amazing job on my warmouth strat body. Very knowledgeable and professional! He finished faster than anticipated, and did great work. Thank you!
I contacted Pat in October of 2017 to refinish my warmoth guitar body with one of his custom swirls. The quality of work that was done and the final results exceeded my expectations and I definitely will use Sims custom Shop again. Pat was very clear up front what his abilities were relative to turn-around time and since this job was a swirl, it would definitely take more time to finish due to the nature of the process. He was very up front with ensuring the final quality before it shipped; called me numerous times to keep me up to date & sent many inprocess and final photos before it shipped. He explained the process and what types of paint / cure times would be needed and said he would cut no corners. I gave him a deadline in Feb 2018 that I needed the guitar body back for and he delivered on time. The quality of work done is exceptional; very satisfied!
Pat Sims is excellent at his painting skills, courtesy and customer service. This is the second bass body that Pat did for me and I couldn't be happier. Pure professionalism. Thank you Pat. Highly recommend Sims Custom Shop.
Patrick created an amazing copy WRB3 guitar body from artwork I created for Reb Beach in 1989. His attention to detail, extra efforts and communication to make sure it would turn out perfect is second to none! I could not be happier - thank you, Patrick! Dan H
I sent Sims Custom Shop my Fender flame double cutaway to refinish in black. I bought the guitar on eBay and it was in rough shape with buckle rash and quite a few paint chips. Just got it back yesterday and it seriously looks brand new. Couldn't be happier. Turnaround time was 8 weeks, which is what was quoted.
Here is the guitar Shane is referring to:

Patrick (Van Gogh) Sims turned my plain white Fender Stratocaster into a work of art.
I was hesitant to paint my guitar so I looked at the work Pat Sims produced on his web site.
I was shocked at how well the paint and finish looked when I opened the return box.
The Guitar Center repair rep who reassembled the guitar said "It's the nicest finish that he's seen on a custom guitar" Store customers were noticing it too. So pleased to have worked with Pat Sims on the guitar, and now I have a custom Race Red Stratocaster that looks like art.
Thanks again Pat!

I talked to Patrick the beginning of April 2021. He was awesome to work with, even calling me on the weekend to go over all the details of my build. He pulled photos of two different paint colors I was looking at to show me real world applications. I ended up going with a tri coat Lamborghini Aventador Viola Parsifae Pearl (really pretty purple). I was more than comfortable sending my Warmoth build to him for paint. It turned out awesomely. I was originally quoted 13 weeks to get the guitar back, but it was closer to 20 before it returned to me. The quality is awesome and I'm quite happy.
Pat did a custom Van Halen Fair Warning guitar for me.
Amazing tone, playability. The guitar screams!
Pat is a real craftsmen and cares deeply about every guitar he builds, whether just his amazing paintwork, or a full build.
Next step... all VH DLR era guitars to be made by Pat.
Back in the fall of 2020, I found a crazy airbrushed Kramer Baretta for sale on Reverb for way too much money. I just loved the paint job and figured I could go on the hunt for a cheaper Baretta style guitar with a banana headstock and find someone to refinish it. I found Sims Custom Shop via Google, sent Pat a message and he said he could do it no problem. About a year later, I finally found a reasonably priced Kramer with all the right hardware in Russia. It arrived a month later and I sent the body over to Pat for refinishing.
Here are the pictures of the final product. Pat exceeded my expectations and put immense care into making this the most incredible paint job I've ever seen on a guitar. It even blows the original we went off of out of the water. I mailed the guitar to Pat in October 2021 and received it this June. Thanks so much Pat & Sims Custom Shop for everything. I highly recommend his work for whatever wild ideas you have. He's the best out there. Rock on.
We all know the truth that Pat Sims is fabulous at what he does. However, the horrifying customer service experience I've endured over the past 8 months is not worth the trouble by any means. I kick myself for not finding these sites before I paid for my requested job IN FULL in October 2021. I recognize that the job I asked from Pat was difficult, but his radio silence and awful customer service is completely exhausting. The time spent with this ordeal hanging over my head is simply not worth it. I've opened up a dispute with my credit card provider. He has left me no choice if I ever hope to see this work done in a respectful time frame! Next I'll be contacting his local sheriff department to get the body returned if the work isn't completed. Again I will happily pay for the completed work, I just want simple communication and respect!
I did a lot of research into having my Warmoth swamp ash guitar body finished. I had an idea, and out of everything I saw online, Sims custom Shop was the guy that I thought would make what I had in my head a reality!
After I emailed and sent him some pictures he was quick to get back to me and discus what I was looking for. He even gave the pros and cons of what I wanted and discussed some options with me. He was honest and straight forward with the turnaround time and as the deadline approached he stayed in communication with me.
The end result speaks for itself and this guy's talent!
Don't hesitate to contact him if you need a guitar refinished.
Patrick you did an amazing paint job on my guitar body. You not only painted it but repaired that small crack. You are amazing in what you do. Thank you very much
Had my Fender American Special Limited refinished because the factory polyester finish was flaking off the body. Patrick called me the same day I emailed and talked me through the entire refinishing process at their shop. He was super professional and his passion for the work came through in a big way. I got the body back yesterday and it is one of the nicest Charcoal Frost Metallic finishes I have ever seen. The color is spot on, the finish is even and really beautiful. It no longer has that factory polyester plastic wrapped look that so many modern guitars have. I'd say the wait time on the refinish was on the shorter end of what I'd expect for a quality refinish, and well within the estimated delivery time Patrick gave me on the initial call when I was shopping around. Next time I need finish work Sims will be the first call I make.
Answer: Two years now he's had my guitar and my money. When he did bother to respond to me, he lied. No he doesn't respond. Total scam.
Answer: I just filed a complaint against him with the College Station Tennessee police department. They are processing it now. I would suggest doing the same.
Answer: Did you ever get your guitar back? I've been waiting since Jan 2015.

This project was finished in 6 months. By my calendar 1 year would not be until Sept 15th 2018. But Kyle Clark knows “almost 1 year” sounds alot worse than “6 months”
Some projects CAN take 6 months depending on:
A.) Our workload at the time the order is placed
B.) What type of work & paint job is being done (A custom paint job, nitro paint job or or swirl paint job is going to be a longer turnaround time than a solid color)
C.) The condition of the instrument (the rougher it is the longer it takes to do.
To date we have painted over 3,000 guitars, of which over 2,000 of them are documented on our Instagram page here:
