I wouldn't call this news, just regurgitated opinionated bias articles based solely, it appears, on APNews as their single source.
A high-school essay requires more sources and references than the half assed stuff Castanet prints. Very disappointing.
There is nothing wrong with writing a critical article, but when you don't do your homework and look into the complete story, interview the people you are reporting on, instead of just copy and pasting from other sources, you look like a sloppy news reporter. Instead of slamming someone in the paper, you should check out the whole story and report the truth rather than reporting trash! I for one will never support your paper because of the lack of respect you show towards the people you write about. I was asked to submit a rating, if I could go below 1 it would be a -10
I've always gone on to check what's going on in my town but it's getting f to blatantly obvious their picking and choosing or stories they twist and how there interviewed always seem to have the same opinion that they try and spread. Would be nice for kelowna to have a balanced honest news outlet.
Just continues to get worse and worse as time goes on.
Headlines that are misleading for clicks, regurgitated stories riddled with typos and poor grammar/writing - repeating themselves throughout the article.
Does anyone proof read or approve these stories before they are posted? I mean is there an editor or is it a free for all?
Just ridiculous.
Do better castanet. Bring in NEWS not fluffy spin driven crap. It's a copy and paste "news outlet"!
This newspaper hired a reporter who reported a story that was not true. The reporter went on the words of one side of the story and never inquired about the other side of the story. It seems they will do what ever it takes to sell advertising.
Castanet does this all the time. I dont even go on their stories anymore because all they do is twist stories to get clicks. Theyll write a story for someone, and then throw 1 or 2 unrelated "facts" about that person. Like "jewelery store doesnt provide masks, but store owner didnt file income tax 2018" like how is that related?
Castanet is a stand-alone news oriented website operating in Canada's Okanagan Valley.
It was one of the first hyper-local portals.
Castanet's "hay-day" was 2003 - 2008, post Okanagan Mountain Park Fire. Back then its
Local news and user generated content was second to none in Kelowna.
Since then it has failed to substantially update or improve itself. It's like looking
Back at the web in a time machine with its dated colour scheme and web 1.0 look and feel. It's a real shame because Castanet had so much potential to franchise and be a serious force in hyper local portals.
Where Castanet excels, probably because it was first to market, is its user generated content: classifieds and forums. It falls flat on its own content: local news.
Pluses:
1. The best classified selection in the Okanagan by volume, (although Kijiji is still easier to use)
2. Great discussion forums
Cons:
1. Too many ads that exceed IAB ad size recommendations. (Site runs much faster with ad blocker)
2. News stories are often reprinted press releases, not real journalism.
3. News stories are often repeats of news found on other local sites.
4. Poor sports and business coverage.
5. You can no longer comment on local businesses in the local forums.
6. No mobile version
Meanwhile the traditional media that generally dominate this space are catching up to Castanet's huge lead.
Castanet is not News, it's someone's opinion and nothing more then a paid advertiser.
Castanet is a joke.
