“AMEX Corporate”

I had a concern that I elevated to Amex corporate and they immediately addressed my concern and fixed it. This was an example of GREAT customer service and is why I stand behind Amex.

“Extra fees charged! Be careful!”

Ana Maria G.

I recently spent nearly an hour on the phone with an American Express card customer service representative and later with the manager. The customer service was terrible and unhelpful and provided conflicting and false information compared to what is stated on the official American Express website. A few weeks ago, I opened a Blue Express Everyday Cash credit card due to the fantastic offer of 0% annual fee, 0% APR, and 0% balance transfers for the first 15 months. After making my first balance transfer, I was charged $150. When I called to inquire, thinking it was a mistake on American Express's part, I was informed that this was a separate fee I had to pay, contradicting the offer still displayed on their official website. Even after reviewing the contract and reading the fine print, the information was not accurately specified. This is a case of fraud, false advertising, and an embarrassment for the American Express card company. I am extremely disappointed and strongly urge you to avoid opening their card as they are deceiving people, lying, and inventing charges.

I have been an AMEX customer since 2010. From Zync up to now Platinum. These cards can be financial tools. But be aware, AMEX may take away your financial tools and freedom whenever they see fit. This has been my experience:

In 2021, in my 2nd year of law school, AMEX rewarded me by lowering my preset spending limit.
In 2023, after graduating law school, AMEX congratulated me by further lowering my preset spending limit.
In 2024, after finally securing my dream job, AMEX again further lowered my preset spending limit (amidst heavy law school debts).

If you have the American Dream of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, I commend you. Persever in your passions. You will likely need help accomplishing your dreams. And if nearly 15 years of being an AMEX customer has taught me anything, it has been not to rely on AMEX to help accomplish my American dream.

I have been an AMEX member since 1989, continuously. Today I decided to open an AMEX savings account, to take advantage of their interest rate. So I opened the page, and began the application. (See photo below). When i got to the page to sign in, it would not accept my ID and password, said they were incorrect. Why? Because you have to lie and say you are not an AMEX customer. After checking and rechecking, I called AMEX. Guess what…TO OPEN A SAVINGS ACCOUNT WITH AMEX BANKING, YOU HAVE TO SAY THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH AMEX. That is what they told me. No, no and hell no. After 34 continuous years with AMEX, I am not going to tell a lie, that lie. Particularly when I intend to deposit a substantial amount of money, which could disappear….why? Because I lied. So beware, BEWARE! This situation is not straight up. And, when you research Reviews for AMEX….well, beware!

After three times contacting AE, I have given up! The first time I was told all set and expect a card in 10 days. No Card in three weeks. I need to call. Oops I was told, they needed some more information, it was given ( no explanation why they didn't contact me). I was told all set. Two weeks later, another call is made (from me). Oops, they forgot one question, I answered it but they needed to start from the beginning. I had been on hold for 9 minutes. I've been a member since '91. I give up. Canceling AE completely.

I was '2' days late with my AMEX payment due to a situation with my health that caused me to get off track and asked for it to be removed. I pay my balance in full every month on time, I had never been late before this time and have been a AMEX card holder (including business cards) for 30 years...yes 30 years and they would not remove the $29 late payment. My response to them was ok no problem! I will just use my Visa cards or my Mastercard cards which are more widely accepted anyway. For $29 you just lost a loyal customer!

There are still some good points but if you have anything that has to be done outside of a purely buy & pay most any other card will be better

I am just wondering. Is American Express slowly fazing out. The last several years I've noticed American Express vanishing. Very little to no advertisements. Year's ago, you used to see them at Pearson Airport selling. Now it seems Master card is explosive on the market.

We use American Express for the sky miles. Whenever we make a purchase, we pay off the card and don't even wait for the statement. This week we had some larger purchases and then the card was declined when we tried to purchase some flights. But the balance is 0. First they said it takes 24-36 hours for the payments to clear but changed their minds when we pointed out it had been 48 hours. After 1 rep ghosted us on a chat, the 2nd had us call and go through that misery, now they say 4 full days for our payments to show so no way to purchase the flights and take advantage of miles at these rates. The payments have left our accounts... What is ae doing with that money for 2 more days.

I have been a customer of American Express for over 40 years. NEVER missed a payment.
I transferred funds from my B of A account to cover my. Payment. I had paid in full. $1700. 00. Due to holiday, I was a day late to pay. I was charged $29.00 late fee, and despite my pleas, they still charge me. Will look for travel credit cards to use. AmEx. I'M DONE!

I've had an amex card for 7 years. Over the years all was fine and service was okay. While all seemed well on the initial card levels, the deceptive experience I've just had this summer has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I downgraded and might stop using it completely.

I got an offer letter in the mail in July for an upgrade for the new Amex Reserve card (made with metal from an old 747, ask me for a photo of the letter as well) and the offer stated: 20,000 bonus miles + $200 statement credit if you spend $3k in the first 6 months.

Sounded like a good fair trade for the higher price card.
I followed the steps from the QR code in the letter and got the new card in the mail. On to the spending.

However...

When I called to ask about the progress, they had no record of that offer on my account, and said unless I could produce a POID code from the letter I had 4 months ago, that there was only a small 5,000 mile offer.

What the what? Was I supposed to keep a paper trail of all of this? I did take a photo of the letter, but that photo did not have the fine print code they were looking for. They said "Marketing will open a case for you and get back to you." That was October. I've called 4x since then to check on it and add further clues - how could this be, since the letter promised this promotion with my name on it?

Well I called one more time, and the lady said now the case had already been closed. No offer. Something fishy going on. No one had contacted me about it!
They said without the code, there was absolutely nothing they could do.

So they were going to just take my money for the higher card but not give me the promised bonus... that's what you get with high stakes at AMEX apparently.

Tip for consumers:
Stick with Gold --- the higher the card, the more deceptive they are with their offers.

AmEx Travel chooses the most affordable packages for you without reminding you of the cancellation policies. I booked a $4500 trip to France and it seems that I won't get a penny back because I had to cancel due to medical issues. Make your own flight and hotel reservations. Dealing with AmEx travel is a no-no. Now they're telling me that rescheduling will cost me about $290, plus charges for the difference in hotel room prices, which will vary depending on when I reschedule. Summer rates would, without a doubt, be higher. I'll be down at least $1000 and I don't know whether it has to be rescheduled. NEVER Or EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER

Something is wrong with their security. I don't know whether an insider is hacking CC numbers or what is going on. I have had to replace my card 4 times in 3 years. I always use it online, so someone is hacking something somewhere. None of my other cards have this problem so frequently. Maybe they do this on purpose so that you will sign up for a more expensive card.

I cannot use my points at Walmart online as promised. The points never go through. I have contacted both companies about this. Surprise! They both say it's not their fault. Points are a BIG joke. You have to have so many to redeem for anything now, it's not even worth it.

I was an American Express customer for well over 10 years. I appreciated the good service and support; particularly, if I had concern regarding any charges. While not the fault of American Express, I, personally, am unable to reap the benefits of the annual fee. Not that I doubt it, but I'm told that if certain actions are taken such as an increase in spend despite my already high balance, for example, I will be able to earn enough membership rewards to cover the annual fee. Being that I'm trying to pay down debt and rid myself of $150 or more in monthly interest, I asked if I might be able to have a discount on the annual fee and also inquired about downgrading from the gold card. I was told that there would be a $30 fee to maintain the existing card member if I diwngrade and, despite stating multiple times that membership rewards we're not of benefit to me, I was told that the small fee to maintain second cardholder would not be waived and was repeatedly reminded of the benefits that I should be able to be reap by putting more charges on the card. To make this already long story shorter, I am no longer a member of American Express. Thanks to the company, I now have MasterCard with no annual fee and a lower interest rate. The bank that I work with happened to offer 15 months with no interest and a small fee for the balance transfer so it was quite worth it. The bank also attempts to detect fraudulent card use and I believe they will stand behind me if a charge is truly fraudulent. In a short period of time, my balance hass reduced notably.

I have been a customer for 18 years and ordered gift cards on line for an awards ceremony. Never received or heard back so called to find out that they cancelled the order and didn't let me know. Did have the cards for the ceremony. Have spent an hour and a half on two phone calls so far and still have not cleared up the issue. Seems that no one can take the responsibility to help me. This is not how you treat a loyal customer of 18 years and will probably not be a customer for much longer.

They are sooo bad in terms of customer service. I have read horror stories but I also have had horror stories with them. Not reliable and not worth having one.
