Is this a scam website? I have been paying for this service for a while and have contacted lots of people who need a place to live. No one has gotten back to me. Then every time my membership is going to expire I get mail all of a sudden.

Hello,

In addition to the tips that you have already received, it is helpful to post pictures of your place for rent. Many people will not consider an ad without photos or information in the Comments section of your profile. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service. As always, some areas may have more roommate potentials than others, but if you add photos and fill in the Comments section it will definitely up your chances for finding a roommate.

Yes, it is. I have heard many stories of people paying for subscriptions, but to no avail have not gotten a single reply from anyone for months. Not only that, but the people on roommates.com are complete scammers themselves. A lot of people will give too-good-to-be-true deals, and they do this to steal your money. How they do this? They give you a check, make you deposit it and spend money from the check, and then they steal the money out of your account. Do not deposit the check before checking if it's fake!

In the end, this is a scam site, and it is almost no better than going to a site like craigslist. Spend your time on another site like roomster.com (more reliable people, very low chance of finding a scammer, and friendly people with affordable prices) or sites like Hotpads.com (simple site to help you search for apartments, rooms for rent, you name it), or even sites like apartments.com (the description is in the URL. The site gives you information on apartments in the area you're looking for, and they could be within your price range). Those are just some options. Be safe, and don't fall for scammers on this site (roommates.com)!

Hello joti g.
I have had success but my last experience was horrible. The landlord lied to me, and then through constructive eviction, forced me out and kept my security deposit and all of the rent. I am seeking advice from an attorney.
Be careful or you may be parted from your hard earned dollars.

I contacted some people about the room for rent and a couple didn't respond-as someone else said not everyone who is on has paid and can't answer-however I found an amazing roommate on this site and all is really working out well. Keep trying.

Joti g, I think it is well worth the upgrade to Choice for $19.99 for 30 days. If you can't afford $20 I don't think I want you as a roommate. I always found a roommate in those 30 days.
I needed a roommate and always waited for them to contact me first. Then I checked their profile. One thing is... If a person did not put any notes in the comments about themselves or used to many "N/A" I did not respond to those. As with anything you have to look for red flags and go with your gut feeling. Common sense comes in handy too.
My review " It's a success 4 times over." is written by me (Raeann H) and is true and not embellished.

I wouldn't say it's a scam- but it's designed in such a way that it's only really useful if you pay them, their customer service is terrible, and premium users probably make up a small percent of accounts.

For me, this website (http://www.roommates.com) is much much better and it was where I found my new roommate.

Only people who pay for the site can read the messages you send them.

People don't have to pay to send a message to you.

That's why you don't get responses.
