Btw apparently google have done this to make their site more "bing-like". given that bing isn't remotely as good as google, the logic of that one completely escapes me. and it goes entirely against google's long-term philosophy of producing rapid results in a minimalistic manner. what were they thinking? I have noticed this too and I am on cable at work. I turned off google instant search but that did not seem to help speed it back up.
