CCleaner is ok upto version 5.40. After that infested with Avast advertising. Just get CCleaner version 5.40 (still available on softpedia and file hippo etc - or get CCleaner PORTABLE from there and download it direct to a USB stick and run it from USB stick).
... of you select the wrong options in CCleaner you might delete something you wanted to keep. It can't 'damage' the computer but you can delte software files that cause the computer to behave wrong. ALWAYS create restore point before doing anything significant to system etc.
Tidying your registry will make no difference to your computer unless the registry is completely corrupted - but then you need more than a freeware cleaner.
I personally would recommend getting 'Malwarebytes Adwcleaner' (free), and 'PCDecrapifier 3.0.1' - small freeware programmes that don't install anything and just help you clean crp of the computer. ... If you don't know what you are doing - do not mess with stuff suggested by PCDecrapifier.
... In windows - also just use ... Windows Administrative Tools - Disk Cleanup....
The main thing to keep computer speed is to uninstall not needed programmes and Apps and block bs stuff from Startup - big startup slow downs can be Dropbox, OneDrive, - UNinstall them unless you use them. Can get them free later if needed. ...
... CREATE RESTORE point before messing with the system and uninstalling stuff - can then recover by going back in time using 'System Restore' if need to
...and if you have Dell or HP - a least half of their Apps are unnecessary (like ...'support assist' - Uninstall imho).

More questions about CCleaner

IS C CLEANER SAFE ON MY COMPUTER WILL IT WORK, WITH NORTON SECURITY, AND WILL IT SPEED UP MY COMPUTER WHAT DOES ANY ONE THING ABOUT C CLEANER, FOR SPEEDING UP YOUR COMPUTER, AND DOES C CLEANER HAVE VIRUS PROTECTION Will CCleaner clash with Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials on a Windows 7 System? when i use this i find that i hav to reset my passwords i clicked on save pasword and a box came up to say you may lose your pass words ?? Where can I take my computer to have them run a registry scan using ccleaner ? I have 2 questions about the product. When you run a registry scan and then it shows many, many items that are potential problems, what do you do if you are not tech savvy? Do you delete them all with the possibility of messing up the computer. I heard that if you don't know what you are doing, registry cleaners can be dangerous. My next question is about duplicate files. I ran the program and again I got hundreds of potential duplicates. How do you go about cleaning these up and what might be the cause of this? does ccleaner continue to work in the backround ?? or do you have to manually keep restarting it like every hour ?? Yes, I upgraded to the 5.08 version and it doesn't seem to clean my computer like the older version did.. It keeps bringing up the same things over and over even after I have cleaned it.. what is wrong? I think I got taken yesterday. Very long story short, I was dealing with a company I assume was in India. The man was very helpful (or so I think) and told me that because I had 3 different anti-virus software system on my computer (which I didn't even realize I had) that they all kind of cancelled each other out. So he removed Norton and McAfee and left AVG. Anyway, he told me that I needed to add CCleaner....but they charged me $249.00. If I'm reading reviews correctly, this software is actually free. He did help me get my wireless running again and he did remove my Norton and McAfee. First, was he correct in telling me that the 3 conflicted and kept each other from properly running anti-virus protection and second, did I pay $250 for something I could have download for free?
