Hi I tried to order an item from AliExpress and they asked for the last four digits of my social security card. This did not feel right. Does AliExpress have a reputation for identity theft?

I ordered online ONCE, and they didn't ask that. That doesn't sound right.

They most likely have a reputation for all sorts of theft including identity theft best advice is do not buy from there at all

Never give the seller your social ever. When you pay on Ali you go to a secure page where your type in your credit card number they never see that only get your money. Or you can set up a Ali pay account for your card and buy with one click by using a code / pin you make up for purchases :)

I have never gave my last four of social you shouldn't either. Also this is like an international version of amazon so the seller may be trying to scam you. I had a lot of problems with my orders i don't order from them anymore

I have never had a problem with Ali express. I don't remember if they ever asked me that. But they do run your credit card before owing your order. I just received a really prett ring fro Ali. It cost me $2.00. You would not believe how pretty it is. I had ordered one just like it in silver and decided to order one just like it in rose gold. The ring was to small. Not the same size as the first one I got. On the page you order from it has "contact seller" I did and got a response within a day. Their times are different. The lady who contacted me asked me what size it said on the ring and send a
Hoto of the tag. I sent back a response that I didn't know how to do that and she said they would send me one just like I wanted for half price I mean what the hell the ring was $3.00. I could have sent it back but I just gave it to a friend. They would have taken off the original $3.00 I paid but I said it was ok. I have never had a problem with jewelry. I will not order clothing because their sizes are too different than ours. I wear a 14 so ordered a blouse ( I loved it) it was like an 8. Gave it to my sister in law and she loves it. She's little bitty. I think toys. Which I have gotten no problem jewelry wonderful and I got perfume. Good. No elec appliances or phones or tools or anything like that. I have ordered at least 50 different jewelry items and really irked all of it (for the price) especially rings.
