This is probably one of my favourite sites and I've been a member for at least 10 years.
Have you ever read a story/watched a series and thought.. "hey what if this happened instead" (like do Harry and Ginny from Harry Potter really belong together or Jacob from Twilight is a really irritating prat who doesn't deserve Reneesme)? Well this is a site were readers and writers come together to write stories about books, tv series, movies, anime etc and readers come to read and review them.
Good for wannabe writers who are trying to hone their skills before writing their first book or readers who like to live in the world of possibilities as almost anything can happen. Different romantic pairings, time travel, alternate universes, slash, different timelines (before and after the original story timeline).
It's also good if you prefer to read stories by favourite characters and type of genre.
The bad news is there is a lot of crap there. People inserting themselves into a story and making themselves all powerful does not make enjoyable reading. The place is also filled with tweens who need to say OMG so many times per chapter but if you're prepared to trawl through the trash you can find some goodies there. If it's a really popular series and the story in question is very long I recommend looking at the amount of reviews it has before opening (or looking at an author's favourites stories/writers).. although you can pass over some really good stuff by doing that.
Give it a shot if you like to see a different ending to some of your favourite stories or if you want to write one yourself.

T N. the "the bad news is there is a lot of crap there" line surprised me and made me laugh too - along with the OMG observation. this is a good suggestion for the writers i've seen here on sitejabber. i'll try to track them down for you!
Acyla H. Glad to have gotten a chuckle out of you. ^_^
I've also seen lots of 12 year olds write some pretty awful stories and far too many summaries that say something like "please be nice it's my first satory" without spell-checking their summaries. The main reason why this didn't receive a 4 star rating is because they seem to be very lenient as to what constitutes as a story and this is more for a place for developing writers.
They probably are easily the biggest fanfiction website on the net (hence why I felt they needed a review).
T N. i say that, especially at the age of 12, the younger you are, the better it is for someone to correct you and help you with things like this.
i found the writers!

they review a couple of hardcore writing sites between the two of them. maybe you'll find new gems or something to discuss :)
Acyla H. Sometimes they can also be more sensitive to critism (which the older and more experienced can dish out quite cruelly). But I've seen an some 13 year olds write some pretty amazing things (and touch on some of the most delicate subjects). LenaM seems more into the professional side of things and her stuff seems to be more for those willing to be serious about their writing and DemiT seems interesting in the choice of topics that she's reviewed (might have another person to stalk there - may have to add someone else before you start getting nervous since you're the only one I'm stalking so far ^_^ ) especially since she talks about beading.
T N. haha, don't worry. they haven't written in a while, but i think if there are other like-minded folks here, it could be a good reason to share more sites with each other. there's a sitejabber forum now - could be a good place to converge, if not on individual websites. there are things brewing here, but there should be a way for people to come together more easily around common interests!
i used to write a lot myself. (i have a blog that i can share with you privately when i work up the nerve!) now that i'm older i find less time (well, i guess you could call my sitejabber obsession writing!? it helps that i'm on a break right now). i find that the more i read, the better i get at writing. that reminds me, i should get off the computer and start reading before bed! where in the world are you that you're up at this hour??
T N. oh, and as an educator, i definitely know how sensitive pre-teens and teens are - but i find if you develop the relationship FIRST, they're much more amenable to your good advice :)
Acyla H. It's always fun to find like minded people.. even if they're not active they still left a trail of stuff which I can go over.
I may try the forum later on.
I'm Australian.. it's only 5.26pm in Australian Eastern Standard Time. *grins* I think it's about 3 am if you're in the US. So if you're there..
I wrote a little (a few stories here and there, a blog or 3) but I'm more a reviewer. So I'm more comfortable writing comments about other people's work and stories (hence why I like this website) although I will disappear for a few months at a time (I'm trying to get back into my grove).
I think that some of the reviewers on the stories are fairly open-minded but I have seen critics banding together and lyching writers by writing about them and then one cruel person sending a link for the author and also writers holding readers hostage by demanding 10 reviews before they write another chapter. Still building up a relationship can be time consuming and most reviewers who give constructive critism won't bother with that relationship unless they can see a redeeming factor/potential about the writer especially on the web.. either that or the reviewer is a moderator with infinite patience. Although I must admit that developing a relationship first is good advice for real life.
My reviews are a bit hard to find (haven't been giving them out much lately - since I'm reading old favourites). Must get back into the swing of things.
Christine N. it's amazing the dominant group mentalities and dynamics that come about when people are faceless and relatively nameless. if i could go back to college, i'd probably choose whatever field that is. too early to think!
T N. Something related to social psychology, I'd imagine - but online social psych. There must be something developing somewhere related to that but with a much more didactic title... and one can always go back to college! :)
Acyla H. *grins* Psychology is interesting. You'll want a basic knowledge about it but if you major in it it may be a bit difficult unless you want to be a psychologist or a social worker or something like that.
I'm thinking of going to uni. I'm in college at the moment doing my diploma in business admin but I really want to go to uni and do a bachelor in arts. Except everyone keeps telling me not to bother about it so I did the practical thing and am getting a diploma first. *sighs* I gave in to the pressure. But it's okay.
