Just inserted new cartridge. Printer wont recognize ink level. Warning light on! Help

Tried all suggested solutions for error message "Print cartridge miss or not detected" Can scan/print/fax from software but not printer.
My first of 2 PG- 240XL Black Ink Cart. worked for 5 pages and will not function any more. Thomas Anderson Order # 421755 will not work anymore. When installed it showed a low ink level. .
I just put in a new black ink cartridge for lexmark x5340 printer and alreadygetting replace cartridge message...and i cannot cancel out of it...
I purchase 2 refills for my canon mx340. The first sends white lines thru pictures Should I try the second. I know it's the cartridge because my old cartridge prints with no lines, just running out of color.
