Lured in by their low price, we rented a boat from Captain Joe's Boat Rental's located at 7904 West Drive, Miami, FL., and subsequently were maneuvered into paying for more services than we needed. As most yearly vacationers in Miami, I have minimal experience with boats, but I am able to confidently navigate a boat and return to most docks without any trouble. In the past, the proprietor of the boat rental company will give you instructions on every aspect of the boats basics – what you need to know to safely operate the boat. The boat will then be positioned in a way that you can easily maneuver away from the dock in the direction you need to go. Upon return, there is always someone available to assist you in safely re-docking the boat. This was not the case when we rented our boat from Captain Joe's Boat Rental’s. From the time we arrived, we were pressured into hiring a captain to pilot the boat for an additional $30.00/hr. Their first tactic was to imply that the safety of your children on the boat was in jeopardy. When that didn’t work, they refused to give you any basic information on the operation of the boat, stating that if you don’t know how to operate the boat, you should hire a captain. After that did not persuade us to hire a captain, they placed the boat in a docked position that only an expert captain could safely maneuver the boat. In the end I did hire a captain and must admit that having a captain did allow me to enjoy the experience to a greater degree. But note, at the end of the 4 hour rental, they did not refill the tank to calculate the amount of gas they used. They ran some numbers in their head and billed us. Captain Joe's Boat Rental is not an honest operation. One more thing, their boats on their website are not the same as what they rent to you.
Safety is #1 if we feel you can not handle the vessel safely we will ask you to take a captain, you will pay them directly. Capt. Joes does not make a penny on captains. We do not keep gasoline in our marina, so we have to send the boat out to be gased. Our boats have gps tracking which will measure gasoline very accurately and if the costomer wants we can give them the vessel full and they can bring it back full.
