Planet Fitness Saratoga/Wilton in NY: Unethical Practices and Disrespect

I'm compelled to share my deeply disappointing experience with Planet Fitness Saratoga/Wilton, a cautionary tale riddled with unethical business practices that should serve as a stern warning to all prospective members.

First and foremost, Planet Fitness violated my trust by renewing my membership without my explicit consent, hitting me with an unauthorized $39.00 charge on September 1st, 2023. I tried remedying this the next day. Its nothing short of theft. This blatant disregard for my authorization is not just unacceptable; it's ethically reprehensible. In my quest to rectify this injustice, I reached out to their customer service, only to be met with further disillusionment. Literally one day after on September 2nd, 2023 to be met with hostility by an employee or "manager" calling herself Kayla.

To my astonishment, not only did they fail to acknowledge their mistake, but they also staunchly denied my reasonable request to pause my membership. I hadn't set foot in their gym for a staggering 10 months, yet Planet Fitness refused to accommodate my temporary absence. This unwillingness to show flexibility and compassion towards loyal customers like me is disheartening, to say the least.

But the unethical conduct didn't stop there. Planet Fitness proceeded to renew my membership and sneak in annual fees without my consent—a blatant money-grabbing scheme that preys on unsuspecting members and demonstrates a complete lack of integrity.

What's even more disconcerting is the reprehensible customer service I encountered during my attempts to resolve these issues. The individuals I spoke to, who I can only describe as inexperienced, young, immature and disrespectful, showed a shocking disregard for customer satisfaction, respect for their elders, and appreciation for disabled veterans like myself. When I mentioned my military status and the fact that I had spent a significant portion of the year in and out of the VA Hospital, they callously dismissed my concerns.

Now, it's essential to mention my credentials as a fitness and health coach with over 30 years of experience. I want to emphasize that I'm not just a frustrated customer; I'm a bodybuilding champion who defeated adults as a teenager on the national level. Recently, I had the privilege of coaching a client to victory in the NY OCB, securing two first-place finishes and the prestigious Best Poser Award. I am well-known in the fitness community and considered the local subject matter expert.

The litany of unethical practices I encountered at Planet Fitness includes:

Misleading Advertising: The gym draws customers in with false promises and then conveniently forgets these commitments once they've signed up, leaving many of us feeling deceived and manipulated.

Failure to Honor Promotions: Promised discounts and special promotions were never applied to my account as initially advertised, a classic bait-and-switch tactic that reeks of unethical conduct.

Subpar Maintenance: It's evident that the gym's equipment and facilities receive inadequate attention in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. This neglect not only jeopardizes the overall experience but also raises safety concerns for members. To make matters worse, they seem to prioritize construction activities during business hours, limiting access to restrooms. In my experience, the gym has consistently been noisy due to ongoing construction work, with the constant hum of tools and equipment, and dust particles frequently blowing in my face.

Privacy Violations: Concerns about the mishandling of customer data, a breach of privacy and trust, further highlight the extent of Planet Fitness's ethical lapses.

Aggressive Sales Tactics: High-pressure sales tactics were relentlessly employed to coerce members into long-term contracts and additional services, a manipulative approach that should never be tolerated.

Refusal to Address Customer Complaints: My earnest attempts to address issues with their services were met with indifference and disregard. This dismissive attitude toward customer concerns is both shocking and unacceptable.

Lack of Transparency: Planet Fitness's failure to provide clear and concise terms and conditions for memberships, contracts, and fees adds another layer to their unethical behavior.

Discrimination or Disrespect: My experience was tainted by the disrespectful treatment from staff, particularly towards my military status and disability. Discrimination and disrespect have no place in any business, let alone a fitness center.

Failure to Maintain Hygiene and Safety: In the midst of health concerns like COVID-19, the gym's apparent negligence in maintaining hygiene and safety measures is deeply concerning and potentially dangerous.

Overcrowding: The gym's consistent overcrowding has created an unwelcoming and potentially hazardous environment for its members. You will get sick here.

My harrowing experience with Planet Fitness serves as a stark reminder of how a business can operate unethically, disregarding the well-being and satisfaction of its customers. I strongly advise anyone considering a membership with Planet Fitness to exercise caution and explore alternatives that prioritize transparency, safety, and respect for customers. My sincere hope is that by sharing this review, we can expose their unethical practices and protect others from falling victim to their deceptive tactics. Do yourself and your community a favor; consider joining the YMCA instead. Planet Fitness is a commercial nightmare that will leave you disappointed, discontented, and feeling financially exploited.

$#*! footing with their cell phones

I live in New Jersey and I have visited three planet fitness which of course I am a member of but I don't go to the gym every day 90% of my workout is calisthenics, That's where the real workout is facts. But I really wish planet fitness or the owner would place at least a 15x15 plaques all over the wall asking the members to leave your cell phones in the locker room It pisses me off when I see a female or a male using a machine doing a set which of course they're doing it wrong they clearly have no idea what they're doing and then after that first set they sit there for over 10 to 15 minutes $#*!ing around with the phones that pisses me off why because I'm there to put in work and when they do things like that they're in my f****** way. 2 weeks ago I went to go do bench press there was nobody around the machine except I saw these three white guys that were at least at least 30 ft away from me. And when I was setting up the the weights one of them comes over to me and tells me or I'm sorry I still have two sets left, I literally tilt my head to the left and give him this crazy look and I replied to him you were at least 30 ft away from me with your attitude friends and you have the nerve to come all the way over to tell me you still have two sets left you think that's right that you can use an equipment and then walk 30 ft away and expect people to think that someone still using machine do I look like a mind reader to you. I seen almost kind of broke out cuz I looked at him with a straight face and I told him you're done. And I went on using the equipment and he went over talking to his friends and I stood up and I said if anyone has got a f****** problem with me I'm standing right here. The sickens me when people use equipment and then they walk away from the equipment and people assume no one's using equipment and when they see someone on they come running back letting the people know that they're still using it how dare you this is the one thing that's f***** up about this country Yes the United States is that these people that majority of people have this arrogant notion of self-importance. And since the owner of planet fitness doesn't want to do anything about it because he or she only cares about the revenue and currency that bring it in then I have no business being a member f*** you

Don't waist your money

I just filled this complaint with the BBB. I will be putting the same information on all of the review sites I can. You lost a loyal customer because of your poor communication and inability to address an issue in a professional manner.
I am an amputee and had surgery on my stump on April 25th. I went into the club and spoke to a manager to ask if I could put my membership on hold or should I just cancel and rejoin when I'm ready. I was told that they could put it on hold for 3 months and to let them know when I was ready to come back so that's what I planned on doing. I had some complications and a second surgery that prolonged my recovery so I wasn't ready to come back after the 3 months. In September my wife told me we were charged for planet Fitness in August. I wasn't able to wear a temporary prosthesis until early September and unable to workout so didn't worry about reinstating my membership or cancelling because I was never told I needed to do anything after the 3 months or that there was a time limit on the hold status on my account. I was busy preparing to go to Florida with the Red Cross so I could be deployed for the hurricane season as soon as I had a permanent leg so I forgot about planet fitness. I was deployed on October 17th to Florida and on Nov 2nd my wife called and said we had been charged again for September. I called my club and told them what I have stated in this letter and that I wasn't able to come in and could they put my membership on hold or cancel it and they said I had to come in to do that. I explained my situation again to the person and was told there was nothing he could do. I asked to speak to a manager and was put on hold. The same person came on the line and said that the manager told him there was nothing he could do I had to come in or send a letter. I hung up and called back hoping to get a manger or another person that would actually try to help me but got the same guy. Again I was told there is nothing he could do and wouldn't let me speak to a manager. My intention was to see if I could put my account on hold again and see if September and October payments could be applied as a credit to my account when I returned but was never given that chance. I called my bank and they were able to get the funds returned and we put a stop payment on Planet fitness for the amount I was being charged. In December I was charged for a double payment and a single payment which was apparently able to get past the stop payment because it wasn't the exact amount the stop payment was set up for. I assume the double payment was to make up for the payments that were returned to me. I immediately went into my club and asked to speak to a manager. He was new and knew nothing about my situation. He cancelled my account and when I asked him if they were going to refund the last payments they took he said he couldn't do anything and to have a nice day. I called my bank and they are working on retrieving those funds.

On Friday the 30th 2022, a guy had a day pass but didn't have a physical valid ID. Manage to get in where hundreds of people are working out, within 10-15 minutes he got out went to my locker took my car keys to my car and took all my belongings. Including my wallet. My driving license,credit cards my business cards the criminal knows where I live and where I work. Totally understand my loss but if this was the actual person and used a valid ID or a membership, the police could have got him and he could be charged with criminal activities. So sad part is this person had gone to multiple other location without a valid ID and with fake names. That is very concerning of all members of the planet, fitness, safety, and comfort that we pay to have. As I am writing this, my heart breaks knowing a criminal has my address and where I work and all my identity this is far beyond jut a robbery to fear that I left with.When will he be back to take my car even know he doesn't know that I changed my keys, or try to get in my house even know I changed my locks for my house he doesn't know that. If anyone reading this please be aware of your surroundings the police is out looking for the person but you cannot be too careful nowadays. Just to be clear I have been coming here for decades never thought it could be me. If he had a valid ID, the case could have been different. Authority would have an easy way to identify the criminal. I am not so worried about my credit cards but I am concerned that he knows where I live and where I work. If this helps another person not to become a victim of this that's all it matters.

If I Could Give A Negative Number I Would
April 22, 2022

This has to be the worst service I've ever received. I canceled my membership in 2020. Recently, I was made aware that Planet Fitness duplicated my membership somehow, reactivated the account, placed me in a higher membership cost bracket, and began billing my account.
I reached out to see what/why/how this happened. I spoke with Parker who confirmed this was an error on their part and he would request a refund and I would receive an email in 2 business days. He also confirmed no activity on the account.
Well, I received the email, but it said they WOULD NOT BE REFUNDING ME and if I had questions, please reach out to management. Letisha Garza stated that they could not refund just because I didn't use it. I didn't use it because I wasn't aware they PLANET FITNESS created an account in error and then up charged me.
That's not the end of it, I called Planet Fitness Cedar Hill and spoke with Adam who was suppose to be the manager. He said he couldn't do anything and I would have to come into a physical location to cancel the membership THEY created. He also stated that this appeared to be a duplicate account created in error and to contact management. I reminded him that he said he was management and he paused. Yea, gotcha.
He then has me to call customer service, which I did. Spoke with supervisor Cynthia. I explained again what had transpired, and the names of everyone I spoke with. She then stated that the accont was created online and it was nothing she could do. I questioned her because everyone else said it was a duplicate account. She said they were ALL incorrect and it was nothing that they could do. She also said that only way to cancel an account that they created was to go to a physical location. I then informed that I would have to get my bank involved and file fraud charges with the police department. Which is when we were disconnected. That's still not the end…
I received an email shortly after with a form stating that the Planet Fitness account had been canceled.
This is the absolute worst! Now I have to close my bank accounts because of this which is a hassle in itself.
Granted, I should have checked my account to have identified these transactions sooner but still, it fraud. Planet Fitness knows its fraud, have verified on multiple occasions that they created the account in error, and they see no usage. I'm out of $24.96 from 3/16/2021 (Per Parker at PF) to 4/16/22 on top of having to pay my back to stop payment to PF.
Next stop is NBC5 as I'm sure I'm not the only one this has happened to.

Kicked out for a bag on the floor

Harassed by a staff member about tiny nap sack. Meanwhile another member I counted 3 that 6 am morning, had their duffel bags with them. I was a member for a year and a staff member at one point.
After telling rude staff member Brittany at PF Houston on Jones rd called Steelechase, I told her, even after a year with no issues, that I would just put it on and continue working out with my daughter. There was nobody in that room with us at 630 am on Sunday. That was our first session together she is 14 and wanting to learn how to workout, I am a trainer, nutritionist and stretch practitioner.
To be honest, I have never been so humiliated and intimidated in a place that is supposed to be a safe place for customers wanting to be a healthier version of themselves. This is not a joke and should be taken seriously, this is not a real gym.
Immediately after telling her I would wear the tiny bag she insisted to repeat the same phrase and a blank stare- like rude teenagers. Then she proceeded to tell me that I need to leave if not. This was also during the freeze, well that morning before the freeze, and after we were sweating for 20-30 mins. I am writing this now because I really do feel that these employees they have are doing this on purpose because they can cancel memberships. It was a girl name Brittany and I am clearly black and Asian decent, so I did feel that she had a goal in mind. I just wanted to share how unfair that was, however because I felt this way and it was not the first from their Sunday staff, during the week staff is fine. No issues, during COVID we all kept our tiny bags. I did leave her a small coffee mess to clean up, as not even the front desk cared when I told them what happened. I was then banned and I am actually a very calm person, I don't get upset easily but her demeanor and energy in front of my kid was so disrespectful I saw red. Btw people are dealing with a lot mentally to have to deal with other peoples childish/racist ways.
Just thought I would share my own experience. Oh and don't ask a PF for a cleaner hydro bed at any location they will look you up and cancel your membership for no reason. I use them for the hydro and massage chair due to a lifelong injury I have from a car accident. I needed PF but they didn't need me, not even a call from back office. If there is one. Lazy staff, rude and disrespectful. Please don't give them a red cent.

Biggest Headaches of My Life!

I signed up around March 2020 shortly before the COVID-19 situation hit. I was supposed to pay the annual membership fee of $40 on April, but they froze membership accounts and the gym nearby wasn't opened until the middle of the September 2020 then closed on October 2020. They only sent me emails of the gym reopening, and never stated when fees are going to be charged. They charged me for September 2020 for the two weeks they were opened. Since it was only $10, I forgave that. I was going to cancel my membership sooner because they required wearing a mask while working out (which is something I can't handle). But to get into the gym to do anything whether speaking to the front desk or working out was atrociously long. I was told by other customers they were waiting for at least 1 hour.

I decided to do it another day, but I live in NYC and my neighborhood was a red zone which meant that non-essential businesses had to be closed to reduce the virus outbreak. This was in October 2020. Planet Fitness was closed the entire October 2020 yet they charged me the annual fee on October 1st and the monthly membership fee for mid-October. This made zero sense to me and it was out of nowhere; without warning. I would've been charged overdraft fees if I didn't have money on the account. I rushed to the location to try to cancel but they were closed (obviously). I tried emailing, I tried calling them, to no response. I walked past the gym numerous times between Oct-Nov 2020 and the gym wasn't reopened so I couldn't walk in to cancel. Their company policy demanded a ridiculous letter which many customers online said that PF would play stupid and pretend not to receive. My friend had this same issue with a different gym called Blink and she had to cancel her checking account to stop them from charging.

For me, I called up my bank to see if they could help and the agent reversed the charges and gave me my money back for these fees. She also told me that I'm not the first customer who called in about this problem. Clearly, PF is taking advantage of people by taking their money while the gym isn't even opened then use the "company policy" and "agreement contract" to get away with charging people regardless of the situation and rules that are out of customers' control. For PF, you could sign up online but thee's no way to cancel online which is ridiculous especially now in a pandemic. I would NEVER sign up with this gym ever again and I would advise anyone else to be careful of them. I also won't ever attach my checking account to any service as minuscule as $10 a month to do ANYTHING.

I already told what has happen

At the service counter the ( hope the youngest) white girl, I told I have been over charge annual 39 and 22 monthly.

I told her that is too much and i need to cancelled it

She said ok she can give the refund on both, then i gave my black membership card and cancelled everything. Then i ask for a receipt or any paperwork, she said they do not give any document and do not worry about it i will get the refund after that stop coming

At that time you issue member ship for free or 10 dollar and you charge me 39 that's why i got mad

Then the pandemic came you were close and i wrote on your web site few times asking about my refund nothing has happen you never reply

When i called few days ago somebody transfer to you and you answer the phone ans said about your policies, you keep your policies to you i do not care that $#*!

Now you and that girl what have told me was contradict and penalized by me on robbing my hard earning money giving bogus information

Now i need the justice since you have done the mistake, that is refund my money or extend my facility on nominal charges with out charging high amounts becouse i am willing to use the service

What happen was you are misguide me and robbed my hard earning money

If i do not get the justice I will be on social media, writ to corporate office at 4 Liberty Ln W, Hampton, NH ******* and going to write to BBB as well

Once again most of the time your message bed were out of order and chairs were not working that happen to me very often and you haven't done anything about it and you are talking on your policies now but i never complain about those

Discriminate and poorly managed

At the Planet Fitness in West Palm Beach South Dixie #0873 in late July 2019 the trainer mistreated me, being very snappy and sharp not allowing us to use a space and just very mean and unkind. We have observed her territorial behavior and odd ways she behaves toward some here like us since she started here a few weeks ago. Although my spouse or I never spoke to her when she mistreated us, my spouse made a comment to me about her nasty behavior and I guess she overheard it and took offense to it. She was behaving in a mean way and seems very hateful and homophobic it seems toward us a married gay couple who have gone to this gym for five years now since they opened. No other trainer here has ever treated us in such a nasty way before. She told the manager my spouse said a bad word about her. The manager came over to talk to us, my spouse was upset and told her it was not nice how she was treating us as customers and we have a right to defend ourselves from her nasty comportment. The following day the manager called my spouse telling him that his guest member privileges were being revoked and he could never use another Planet Fitness club again in his life and that I as the contract on the membership I could cancel if I wanted since we always come in together to use the gym and actually joined together. We came in and met with the manager who presented me with a form to sign online to cancel and emailed it to my spouse and me. The manager sided with the nasty and hateful employee over long-term customers of five+ years who have never created a problem in all the years and have paid upwards of $1000+ in membership fees over the years. What a slap in the face to us as members. My spouse also asked why the manager did not give any due process or a second chance, since the employee provoked the entire incident with her mean ways. This gym has deteriorated considerable since this manager took over now the past few months. The employees change every other week, the club is not cared for well, the bathrooms are filthy, the machines need greasing and do not work smoothly, and the employees are ill trained and treat customers poorly or change so frequently. The management and staff here do not enforce the rules for members and allow all to be loud, swear, not break down weights, never clean up after themselves, talk on their phones and sit on machines on their phones not thinking of others. Since we were forced out by a mean and hateful employee, having my spouses membership revoked and then canceling mine and losing out on 18 days of the gym plus the annual fee, Planet Fitness should have to reimburse us for the time we now cannot use this gym. WE have spoken to our bank to make sure they do not try to charge us more, although we cancelled and have the cancellation; we have heard horror stories about this gym. We believe that this manager and trainer will not last based on how they treat people and their poor leadership. WE do believe Planet Fitness should dismiss them, as you should not have people like them working with your customers. Either way, they will be the cause of their own demise by the way they have been since being at this gym. Please refund us for our lost money with your gym. We will go to a better gym that can be kind and respectful of us without hate and the nasty ways of this trainer. The manager is not a problem solver, she is a young kid who really should not be running a business and has no right in a job like that, as she really does not care, and she does not even smile or treat most people well. Many former employees of this gym have told us they all left because of her nasty leadership, so many employees, they all leave, and this says something about this weak and pathetic manager. She would never listen to my spouse and sided with her new trainer who has been on a power trip since she started working at this club. PF should have a separate training area apart from the areas all people use to work out. Planet Fitness Headquarters needs to step in, intervene, and improve what is going on here. This manager gave a name and email of her superior, and then she called, but the number, name, or email do not show up on any Planet Fitness webpage. Therefore, we are taking the liberty to send our complaint and assessment of the altercation directly to the BBB so PF corporate or regional can address and know what is going on at this club. Please refund us the portions that we paid of the annual and monthly we were not able to use since you forced us out. We will also look into talking to some lawyers about how we were treated by the employee and manager and how there was never and due process given in this case to use just a revocation. We hope Planet Fitness will take this seriously and improve the management and situation on the ground at the Planet Fitness in West Palm Beach. There is a lot of questionable stuff going on here and customers should never be treated the way we were treated on Tuesday by this employee and then forced out like this by this manager. Please address this fairly and improve the situation here. Unfortunately, after this horrendous incident with your employee at your gym we could never speak highly of this gym or Planet Fitness as a whole, nor do a positive review, or promote Planet Fitness at all ever to friends, family, and loved one. We are mortified at how we were treated by this manager and your PF employee and wanted to share this review with others. This gym is poorly run now, dirty, and they do not maintain their equipment well here now and employees are ill trained. We hope they can improve and not chase good customers away by their mean and discriminating treatment.
