November 19, 2009

Putian City, in the Fujian Province of China, lies on the south-eastern edge of the country, on the west side of the Taiwan Straights. It is a small but ancient city, home of the South Shaolin Temple, and according to China Today, its growth in gross industrial output value and in the disposable income of its urban inhabitants is top in the province.

No doubt helping in this economic growth and putting much disposable income into the pockets of the locals, is this site, overbestmall.com, which along with crazychi.com, www.sunshox.com, buyhotsoft.com, superjersey.com, topjersey.com, topsjersey.com, topsjerseys.com, dandyjersey.com, classyjerseys.com, superjersey.com and more, is registered to traders on Fuxing street, even though it sports an apparently-USA telephone number. Not for nothing is this city known variously as "shoe city", garment city", "electronics city" and more as it's home to a whole slew of Chinese merchants trading in all manner of replicas.

This particular business deserves special notice as if you look in the FAQ you'll see it's christened the term "replithentic" - authentic, replica, get it? Not being a sporting person myself, I really don't understand why someone would pay $70 for a fake shirt, especially since the site goes to lengths to make clear on every product page that you're only buying a replica. But then I went to mlb.com and discovered that the genuine article will set you back up to $200 or more. So now I understand why someone would pay $70 for a Chinese-made replica, though I now don't understand why the authenticated version costs more than double that.

I would be more or less obliged to give this site a MEH for being sneaky about its origin but not being able to demonstrate that it's anything worse than that. However, I notice also that it's using fake seals and logos from McAfee SECURE and Verisign and Trustwave, to make visitors think it's safe. Which I now have to assume it certainly isn't. I'd stay away from this one if I were you, and if you go to another, do check that phone number to see if it's the same one. You may also run any phone number through Google to see if it's what it seems to be, and do bear in mind that these days a country code doesn't guarantee that the actual phone is in that country.

As this is a Chinese site, if you have customer service issues you'll almost certainly find you're out of luck. A company that conceals its location and lies about the security of its transactions isn't likely to have much by way of a customer service department and in any case it's way, way beyond the reach of Western laws so it doesn't need one.
