COMPANY SEEMS TO BE COMPROMISED.! AFTER ORDERING FROM THEM THEN SOMEONE STOLE MONEY FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT and drained All the money from my bank account! Luckily I did not have all my money in my bank account or they would have taken everything.
I am a new first time customer. I did the spend $25 and get free shipping deal. All I ordered was 2 of the same kind of lotion and 3 body oils and the body oils were all the same kind of body oil so their should be no confusion with my order. I didnt order a bunch of stuff. They sent me an email saying my items have been shipped. So if thats true then I should be getting them soon. Well this company seems to be compromised because after I ordered from them them, then someone stole money from my bank account and it seems that its because I ordered from hollar. Someone did something called a wire transfer and they took out $. Thats what my bank told me after they notified me. The person that stole money calls them self square. WHAT OR WHO IS SQUARE? SO IT SEEMS TO ME THAT HOLLAR HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. Not cool. Not cool at all.
I dont know what was up with that because it happened right after I ordered from Hollar... maybe it wasnt because of Hollar though but it seemed odd. I got my items. The 2 lotions both had a safety seal so thats good and the body oils didnt but thats because of the type of bottle. It doesnt smell like anything so its definitely was not the type of oil I wanted but I think I might have ordered the wrong oil by mistake so thats not their fault.
They used some type of strong tape with the name Hollar on it to make sure the caps didnt come off. One piece on each bottle. I thought it was odd there was no bubble wrap but luckily nothing broke. If they use bubble wrap for most orders then things will likely not be broken when they get to you. They put no paper in the box saying thank u for your order. And no bubble wrap. They just put plastic around the items. So it depends what you order I guess. I am a little paranoid about the oils. Anyone packaging these could have unscrewed them and put whatever in there. But probly not. Would I trust ordering from them again? Maybe not because the thing that happened with my bank account was odd that, that happened.
I found out about Hollar from a site that went on & on about how it's the way better version of the dollar store. They talked about how they have brand names like Aveeno, Neutrogena, Nivea, Dove, Pantene etc.
At first I was super pumped to go find myself some awesome deals. I already buy Aveeno so that was the first brand I checked out, then Neutrogena. No exaggeration - Aveeno Nourish & Shine shampoo & conditioner are $9 each, both the Ultra Calming & Positively Radiant wipes are $9.95, Neutrogena Moisture Shine Lip Soothers are $9 - that is twice as much as Target! Are they nuts?!
At Target those exact items are anywhere between $5-6.
I am shocked. I have zero idea how a company can be considered the better version of a dollar store but charge twice as much as Target/Walmart/Amazon.
I scanned through the rest of Aveeno, Neutrogena, Dove, Nivea & other well known brands. Plus I checked out all the brand name household items. There were only a few items that were just slightly less than buying at well known stores.
Lots of the brand name products are discontinued, packaging has been updated so Hollar is selling the old package & a few items are actually sold in other countries but not in the US.
I didn't see one item from well known brands that was a good deal. The brand name household items are a terrible deal.
I gave up on the brand name stuff & literally went through every single category combing through, trying to find items that would give reason to why Hollar is claiming it's like the dollar store but better.
I found a few decent deals on random items I didn't need & none of them were $1. Most of the items that seem to be the better deals were priced $2-5. They have items priced all the way to $10. The $1 items seemed mostly like poor quality junk, old/discontinued or just stuff you really don't need & you end up buying simply because it's $1. I did see some brand name hair ties for $1 & those are normally a few bucks so I'd buy those.
In regards to pricing, this company is more like Dollar General, Family Dollar or Big Lots. They seem to have a few items that you randomly come across that are priced below what you'd pay elsewhere.
Hollar needs more photos & the zoom in function. They also need better descriptions on the items.
I updated this review to say that their refund policy charges $4.95 per order, not per item. Hollar commented on my review because I mistakenly thought they charged $4.95 per item. Their policy says:
"If youre not 100% happy with our products, well gladly accept returns within 365 days from your order date. Please note that returns are subject to a restocking fee of $4.95." The wording isn't super clear, but now that I know it's only $4.95 per order that's definitely better.
Really hoping Hollar steps up their inventory & lowers their prices WAY down, if they want to live up to their 'better than the dolllar store' claims.
Overall - not impressed with Hollar - AT ALL.
Update on 11/14/2017: I finally made an order since they offer a discount on $10 orders & free shipping on your 1st order. Everything was broken due to the worst packaging ever! Items weren't wrapped with any individual bubble or protective wrap. They were literally just throw in the box beside each other with one very thin layer of small bubble wrap around all of the items. There wasn't even additional packing material in the box to prevent items from moving around. Everything was literally shattered into a zillion pieces.
My dog could have packed a box better!
And guess what? I contacted customer service (who was nice & helpful) with photos of the box. Everything was sold out (another negative with Hollar since for many items, once they're sold out, they're gone forever) so I reordered some similar options & since they knew the horrible packing issue, I asked them to please make sure this replacement order was packed properly (I shouldn't have to tell them that) & the 2nd replacement order was packed just as badly & everything was broken in that order too! Again I contacted customer service who again was very nice & made a 3rd order with unbreakables which arrived fine. But that's the 1st & last time I order anything breakable from Hollar. What a hassle!
There are good things and not so good things about Hollar.
Customer Service -- 5 Stars!
(Though the "thanks for hollering" thing is just too corny). The people I spoke with on the phone were very nice and helped me fix a problem I had with my order. They even offered me additional credit for fixing an error that was my fault!
Prices - 4 Stars
Some good items at great prices. Some name brand items can be gotten for a good price. However, do be careful. Most of the Fisher Price toys I looked at, for example, I could buy cheaper with free shipping, no minimum purchase, and 30 or 40% off from Kohls.com. The lesser known brands were typical dollar store quality.
Shipping -- 3 Stars
First off, I had no problems with the packaging. My order was complete and nicely packed. Shipping speed was slower than most other online retailers, but the company is 100% upfront about the shipping speed on its website. I'd give the speed 4 stars: It's just not good enough to warrant five stars, but my package arrived within the expected time frame, so I'm okay with it. If you want 2 day shipping, this probably isn't the retailer for you. The free shipping threshold is a significant problem, however I had a really hard time finding $25 worth of stuff I wanted to buy at one time. Most of the stuff at Hollar, I can buy for slightly more and get free 2-day Amazon Prime shipping without having to spend $25, so Amazon becomes the cheaper, more convenient option. Places like Walmart also have free 2 day shipping now, and it's easier to reach the threshold from Walmart because I can either have it sent to the store for free with no minimum, or I can find a lot more things to buy at Walmart.com. If Hollar would lower the free shipping threshold to $20, I would be much more likely to make more orders. It seems that the stuff I actually really want always comes to about $15. I can talk myself into finding an extra $5 worth of stuff to get free shipping, but an extra $10 worth of stuff is stretching it.
Website -- 2.5 Stars
It's hard to find things on their website. When I type in "Melissa and Doug" to the search bar, only about half the Melissa and Doug brand toys that were for sale actually showed up. I also wish they had more ways to sort products. For example, it would be really nice to be able to search for toys for children 0-24 months rather than searching through "action figures" or "dolls" or "vehicles" categories to find the 4-5 toddler toys in each category. To some extent, it's smart to make customers search through lots of products to get what they want. It does encourage impulse shopping. However, I also find it to be annoying and time-consuming enough that, if I can't find what I want within 5-10 minutes, I'm probably going to get frustrated and give up completely.
Inventory -- 1.5 Stars
This is THE biggest downfall of Hollar, and it is the main reason I don't see using it often. I had a really hard time finding $25 worth of stuff to buy. If they carried more food or personal products, I could probably come up with the $25 pretty easily, but they hardly had anything. My family doesn't eat cereal or candy or sugary snacks often, and that's 95% of the extremely limited grocery options offered on Hollar's website. I'm doubtful that most of the clothes would fit. I almost never buy clothes online unless the retailer offers free returns because sizing issues are just too big of a problem. I had slightly better luck with cleaning supplies, but you really have to watch the package size. They do offer some good toy options. Toys seem to be one of Hollar's largest departments. Quite a few toys were out of stock when recently went there. If you have several children, though, you could probably find $25 worth of good toy deals. Maybe Hollar should just specialize in cheap toys and kids stuff and skip most of the other departments.
