Some of the age ratings they give are shocking. If any video game has some red mist in it, automatic 18+, because I guess it'll traumatized anyone under the age of 18. They even rated The Master Chief Collection 18+. I could've handled that game when I was 12. Terrible, money hungry website that claims to be non profit.
I've read quite a few of their so called media reviews for movies. They are 100% bias and not based on fact for the most part. I have seen ratings from them on G rated childrens movies claiming that they are too sexual in nature because a man looks at a woman. Good idea. Horrid execution. They need to shut down their business and do something that's actually worthwhile.
I decided to see a review for a game my kid really wanted. Apparently saying the phrase "oh, for goodness sake" is a reference to a Japanese alcoholic beverage. I then decided to compare it to a movie I know that it's plot basically involves a teen taking drugs and being high as heck in the movie. They gave the game a 2/5 drinking/drugs rating, but the movie only a 1/5 rating for drinking/drugs. Also, one f-bomb is worse than basically a book containing all the other swear words except for f*ck.
The entire thing is just boomers calling whatever they deem "inappropriate" bad, and basically always considering it detrimental to the quality of whatever game or movie they're $#*!ting on. There is some semblance of sanity in the non-"parent" reviews though.
Backed by Gates, Mark Z and Benzos. Facts are left out to help with context. Everything has a leftist slant. Hopefully, find a news agency that has real common sense and just reports the news in full context. It's not this trash.
Overall there website lagging cause' it to be difficult to even create an account sitting on an indefinite loading screen multiple times because there website either can't handle the foot traffic or just because of some problem within there website.
Years ago, I looked to this site as a good place to see if movies and or television shows were good for children. Then something happened. It's all about wokness. Any sort of Real review about how good the move you may be is thrown out the window. It's all about how diverse the cast is and any sort of inclusiveness- no matter how obscure.
You have to pay to read more then 3 reviews a month and its all just some karens telling bull$#*! about TV shows and stuff. Imagine liking a show and then you go on this trash website with a bunch of karens saying that its violent. Also when you write a review sometimes it would say it contains alcoholic stuff for no reason. And the worst part is people actually believe in those dumb review and you know how it ends up. No fr about 5 people said spongebob squarepants was 18+ like the dumbest reasons. I can not believe that this website is still running its so Bad.
Once were good a year ago, since then they seem to have been "compromised" by the industry... split up reviews "by teens" and "by parents" obviously pitting children against parents, and attempting to basically shill for the movie/Netflix industry by playing down serious disturbing content, or making light of dangerous subjects (see their ridiculous "this is great story" reviews about Squid Game, something that NO CHILD should be watching, anyone under 18)
When Common Sense Media became available, I was very excited being that I am a big movie buff. I am very disappointed as to the blatant bias that they provide on so many movies. On some reviews they can be 500 words long and over detailed to the point where why? Other reviews can be one or two sentences that are very vague and give you no clue as to what the inappropriate content might be. I was really hoping for a service that I could count on but Common Sense Media does not fulfill that role.
Good website to determine if certain entertainment is safe for your children to view/hear. Shows many details about movies, games, and songs that may contain questionable content (such as violence, sex, or foul language)
After reading some of the movie reviews on shows I've already watched I was genuinely horrified at the content descriptions. "The " positive " themes contain sexism against males, which isn't at all positive." - comment in relation to a character that went through a bad breakup with an abusive (male) partner. The reviews on there play like a long list of angry church moms and bitter dads.
They pretend they're a family-friendly, faith-based organization - but they're far from it. If you look deeply into their reviews, they actually bash faith-based films while giving great reviews to sick and twisted movies.
Don't trust these guys. They'll go on a Thursday to the box office to try to up their competitors with a negative movie review. Horrible people running this website.
Movie critics in general are simply losers who wish they could be filmmakers. They will be forgotten as that heavy-set critic with glasses who died - roger something. Movies live on - critics don't.
Forget about getting and use out of this so-called non-profit unless you pay for a "plus" membership. Unbelievable that you are limited to 3 "free" reviews a month. Very disappointed in this formerly useful service.
I usually write pretty thorough reviews, but for this site, there's not much to say about it. For one, it used to be good. Then they over exaggerated everything to the max. Most critics on Common Sense Media don't even have kids, miss obvious details in every game, movie, or book, and if they even held it, they didn't finish it. If you go on this website, only look at the kid reviews. The parents are just as overprotective as the critics. The kids are the ones who experienced it. They will tell you what you want. It's also full of spam...
They complain when a girl has too big of a chest or when one character drinks beer. The whole website is laughable. They don't give any insight to the plot, I don't even get why parents trust this website. They even bashed spongebob, the most innocent show out there. The "expert reviewer" doesn't even watch the whole show. For example, they said Fairy Tail (an anime) had no moral lessons and showed seduction and violence. It's pretty clear that they don't watch at least a few episodes and make a review right off the bat.
A+ for actual common sense (as opposed to anyone's agenda). No one's perfect, but overall they have been as helpful as any critic, but with more info on the mood of a given movie.
Common sense media always gave good insight and good points to why or why not to allow you or your family to view a film or game. They could improve on reflecting actual parent insight, because sometimes the vast majority of parent reviews go against the rating given by the actual site
This website is garbage because they put age ratings too high and believe that media actually influences non-mentally ill children. "Oh noes, there was a kissing scene! No child should ever see a kiss!" The most stupid one is "consumerism." They give shows bad reviews because they make merchandise. Beyblade got 2 stars because you can get them at the store, regardless of the quality of the show. They put "language" as words like "idiot, stupid, dumb." The critics are all dumb. They like to say something is bad because it's for older people. They are just soccer parents that don't know about entertainment.
Every TV series or game seems to have been reviewed by $#*!s who haven't played or seen it.
My parents don't use it but it's better this way, any reference to sex or blood is considered 18+ and I wonder why.
Sex is perfectly normal just like blood, violence and guns have never made me violent.
With their youtube channel it is even worse they rate any violent game 18+, example: titanfall 2 18+, far cry primal 18+ and any other game that has some blood almost all 18+.
Plague inc was rated 18+ because they thought they were messing with the corona virus but should be informed that the game came out in 2012.
It's ridiculous
Answer: It wont scam you, but its a big waste of money. They claim that they are a non-profit company, but that's clearly no longer true.
Answer: No it's a parents guide website (even though its really, really bad)
Answer: There's no shipping. You could waste your money to buy access to looking at reviews, but you get it straight after you buy it.
Common Sense Media has a rating of 1.7 stars from 55 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Common Sense Media most frequently mention and non profit. Common Sense Media ranks 124th among Internet Safety sites.
