BUYERS and SELLERS BEWARE!
I have so much to share and it makes for a long read but well worth it as a buyer and seller. I promise!
I work in corporate as a technologist while also buying and selling amazing pieces of furniture and decor on the side! I've done my homework and my assessment of Chairish is that they're a not the Upscale experience they try to promote.
As a small scale seller (because I do this on the side), I would love to know how Chairish can justify their 40% commission rate as of December 1st, 2022. They're not storing, picturing or inspecting my inventory. So what are they offering that they think they're entitled to almost half of my investment. A website?!? Please
So, I marked my calendar for December 1st as "THE great purge" and my friends and I laughed as the date approached. YES, I deleted every single one of my listings! And I hope other sellers did the same! It's outright thievery for Chairish to think they can charge those rates for the lackadaisical services they provide. Let me share more about those services…
When selling, they take a week or more to approve a listing - which is comical considering all of the money they're making off of sellers. Perhaps they should reevaluate their staffing model. Business 101! On eBay, my item is listed the moment I hit list - literally seconds!
As a buyer, because of their commission rate - sellers have to artificially inflate their prices as well as price gouge on shipping in order to make money. For example, I paid $175 in shipping costs for two temple jars to be shipped. When they arrived, I weighed and measured the two boxes and calculated a $30 shipping quote for BOTH via private ship. Which is a discounted shipping platform for sellers. Anyone can create a free account on Pirate Ship and leverage their discounted rates at no cost to them. But sadly sellers have to make money somehow since chairish is robbing them of so much of their profit. Another example of how you will get scammed but due to the greediness of Chairish!
Chairish services don't match the "exclusive" platform they pretend to present to buyers! I unfortunately received broken China from a purchase I made on Chairish. It legitimately took me weeks of back and forth via email correspondence, pictures, more pictures all because I had to include a picture of each piece individually in order for me to receive a partial credit. This is just not acceptable and WAY too much of a hassle for buyers. So please beware when buying! Also, this is a IMPORTANT detail - you only have 2 days to inspect your package. So you better hope you're home and can get it open in time. Otherwise you're void of any and all protections. Whereas on eBay you have at least 30 days! Come on Chairish, people are spending thousands…give them more time. Also, in comparison; eBay, which I have on many occasion received damaged China, makes the process seamless and pleasant for all. You simply send an email with pictures and typically receive a refund within 24 hours! And if you need to call someone - you can! Go figure! EBay really provides amazing buyer protection that we all deserve. And in cases that require more support, which is rare - eBay has always done the right thing! Want to protect yourself - don't spend your money on Chairish.
Furthermore, as a technologist, google has made it SO much easier for buyers to search across the internet for unique pieces and find them much cheaper elsewhere. Given this new feature and the ease of use, buyers all over can find many of the same or similar pieces elsewhere.
I highly recommend all buyers and sellers to move to sites like EBay that only charge 12.5% commission on almost all items and really protect buyers and seller alike.
It's time for everyone, whether you're a designer or an individual buyer. A full time seller, or like me, sell the occasional gems, to stop lining the pockets of this greedy company and their execs! Move to platforms that actually are fair and equitable as well as provide amazing buyer and Seller protection! We need to support businesses that support us and stop sites like chairish!
In closing here are some fun facts - eBay has a total of more than 1.5 billion active listings. 159 million users are active on eBay. Over 19 million sellers have accounts on eBay. EBay sees more than 109 million visitors to its website each month…
Compared to chairish's data, "10,000 small U.S. businesses sell on Chairish and nearly 2,500 verified professionals sell on Pamono. Together, we offer more than a combined 850,000 products for our 4 million monthly shoppers." Feb 9,2022
Oh and get this, they consider their business "Upscale". Well try upscaling your services and protections policies, seems like an appropriate ask for such an "Upscale" company…am I right?!?
I'm sure I've left off other critical details but I think you all get my POV. Chairish has a lot of work to do and they're a long way out from matching the services of their competitors!
Please, please use google image, it's super easy and I promise you'll find lovely treasures elsewhere…and likely for far less!
The end!
Do your homework!! Read the fine print! Or better yet, try to get a real person on the phone…
Purchased temple jars and tobacco leaf China
I placed an order on Chairish, and 23 days later –– I still had not received my order within the seller's advertised lead time of 2 weeks (made to order; not including shipping transit time).
Ultimately, it took 24 days, 6 emails, and numerous escalations within Chairish management to get a response regarding a) order status and b) shipment tracking number. I received neither.
I will NEVER spend money with Chairish again and advise others to stay far far away.
Details:
On January 30, I placed an order.
On February 9 I reached out to inquire when the order would ship. Chairish responded: "I will connect with the Seller to confirm the status of shipping for this order and for them to provide the tracking details. Once confirmed, I will provide you with the details!"
On February 12, I sent a 2nd email to request order status and shipment ETA. Still no response.
On February 14, I sent a 3rd email to request order status and shipment ETA. I finally received a response with a lie suggesting "14 days as this is made to order. Please note that the listed lead times are in reference to the number of business days required." The listing clearly stated "2 weeks" made to order.
On February 18, I received an email from Chairish stating "I have not yet heard back from the seller..."
On February 19, I sent my 4th email in response stating "We are past the 14 day lead time and the revised 14 business day lead time." I indicated that if a tracking # is not provided by February 21, I require a full refund.
*After researching the seller on the Better Business Bureau, it's clear this is not an isolated incident. The seller accepts payment and never ships the product. Chairish continues to list their products.*
On February 21, I escalated this issue (now my 5th email) to senior managment at Chairish. Still no response.
On February 23, my 6th email, I escalated the issue to more contacts within Chairish leadership –– hoping for a resolution. Only when I did this, did I receive a full refund within a few hours and – NO response apologizing for their incompetence and subpar customer service.
It took 24 days, 6 emails, and numerous escalations within Chairish management to get an a) order status and b) shipment tracking number.
Final outcome – a refund 24 days later and no follow-up communication.
Something is fundamentally wrong with this company. Horrendous customer service, poor and non-existent communication with customers, and a failure to provide simple transactional updates. Operationally, Chairish is a hideous disaster.
Do not shop with Chairish (essentially an online auction house) unless you'd like to be robbed and gaslighted along the way - whilst jumping through hoops to finally receive a refund for a product that never shipped.
Do not purchase anything from Chairish.com unless you want to deal with an enduring nightmare.
I purchased an art deco floor lamp from Chairish. It took over 6 weeks to be delivered w/hardly any communication. Finally arrived. It was advertised as in great condition. I got it, the metal rod that is supposed to hold the lampshade up was broken. Then I plugged it in and the lamp buzzed and crackled loudly and one of lightbulbs didnt work. The lamp continued to crackle and buzz-by being plugged in--this was an obvious safety hazard and then the lights went out--so the lamp's electical plug was in such bad shape you couldnt a) put the lampshade on and b) you couldnt plug it in and use it as a lamp. Yeah, pretty useless. I immediately emailed Chairish and spoke to a moron (I'm being nice) called Sanjeev. He profusely apologized and said dont worry, we will make this right... they are so shocked this happened (lols yeah riight, its your business plan) and dont worry, we will take care of this issue and make sure you are happy. Ok, I fell for that and Sanjeev said go get an estimate for repair and send it to me, Take pics and send a video. I did all of that. The repair was to be over $300 and I paid $150 down to the lamp repair shop to begin repairing the lamp. After sending Sanjeev everything he requested, he just disappeared, fell off the face of the earth--never returned the calls,,, I called so many times, emailed and someone at Chairish picked up the phone and hung up--multiple times. They are very experienced at their con. So this is what Chairish does. They false advertise and once you receive the item that is not what it was advertised, they a) blame shipping, b) blame you, yes they suggested that I broke my own lamp that I paid thousands of $$ for... yeah! Suure! Sanjeev. Then, after apologizing and saying they will make it right--they--POOF! Disappear. So their business plan is this. They disappear and they hope you dispute it with your credit card company so you (me the consumer) get your $$ back. Then, they keep your $$ and they also claim insurance $$ as my item was insured. They are absolute scum and scammers. I have reported them to the California Attorney Generals Office, there is a case pending and I also reported them to the FTC (Federal Trade Commision) Chairish will be contacted shortly by the authorities. Will be interesting if they try to duck and dive from the authorities. I would tell everyone who has had a similar experience than mine, report them to the State Attorney General's Office for ecommerce fraud. They need to be shut down. They messed with the wrong person. Please, do not order or do business with them. I have a couple of vendors I found on Chairish but I just contacted the vendor directly--and ordered items and had zero problems -they were fantastic. Do not go through Chairish unless you want to be ripped off. Been there, done that. Now its the CA Attorney General's office that will be dealing with them. Absolute scumbags. Good luck people & stay safe
Run, dont walk, do not do business with Chairish, they are scam artists
None..they are scammers, selling broken defective items.
I purchased a (OOAK) chest on May 17th. They claimed it would be delivered on June 19th, using Metropolitan Warehouse (another terrible company, check out their reviews). They set up a delivery for June 19th and then informed me by phone on June 18th that that they didn't have the item and don't know when it will arrive 'at the warehouse' or where it is. This happened 3 more times before today (July 20th). I was onto them and started documenting all the lies including with Metropolitan Warehouse. Chairish 'customer service' (a Complete Joke) is overseas somewhere, possibly India, and are consummate liars and scam artists. I opened up a PayPal dispute last week and scammer "Darshan" from Chairish told me they couldn't deliver on July 18th unless I closed the dispute- I told him this was a bold-faced lie, and so he backed off, not to be heard from again. Of course there was no delivery on July 18th so I did the credit card chargeback on July 20th. Then "miraculously" I received a refund from "Tamara" (on Indian business hours) plus a $200 "Discount" because I had told them I was putting them on blast on the Internet. "Tamara" stated she had "just" found out the item was "irreparably' damaged, how CONVENIENT and plausible. This after 4 weeks of no one telling me WHERE the item is, since it isn't "at the warehouse". Anyway you get the picture: completely horrible company. And of course they "Darshan" tried to blame COVID-19 for the "small delays" because when you are this terrible, of course you will go there. AVOID AVOID AVOID. And I wouldn't but anything else from them if they paid me $2000.
UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER 3,2019: Inventory and money are still nowhere to be found. This awful platform scammed me out of thousands of dollars. The irony is that I am a legitimate seller with wonderful inventory and great success on a variety of platforms. Chairish has stolen my inventory and banned me from the site while allowing every $#*!, Who and Mary with access to a local garage sale and a 4G connection to cheat people out of their hardearned money. If anyone knows what I can do to get paid for the inventory removed from my place of business by Chairish's shipper and hold this company accountable, please let me know.
Original review: Seller here. Chairish decided to cancel my orders and refund my buyers after merchandise was picked up by CHAIRISH transporter (garbage outsourced Philippines company Metropolitan) against the wishes of my buyers. Buyers are pissed, my inventory essentially stolen by CHAIRISH and CHAIRISH might still have buyers money. CHAIRISH even called one of my customers to ask to pick up her purchase from her to return it back to me weeks after delivery. She called me, freaking out, saying the items were getting reupholstered and that she loved them, didn't want to send them back. I still haven't received payment for that order, nearly 2500 bucks. CHAIRISH says that they are cancelling the orders and harassing buyers / stealing my money because I violated terms and conditions. I asked them which ones. They said they don't have to tell me. How convenient! I guess they are accountable to no one and can exploit small business people, steal their inventory, take their money and do whatever they want with no one holding them accountable. We're talking over 20,000 bucks of inventory stolen by this predatory criminal enterprise. Legitimate dealers / decent Sellers please, I beg you, do not list your items on this platform. The only way we can get rid of this parasite of a company that is literally ruining lives is to deprive them of quality inventory. We have to work together on this. Posting a screenshot of one of my buyers asking for me for help because CHAIRISH keeps contacting her to pick up her purchase from her for no reason and this is while CHAIRISH has not paid me a cent from the sale. Also including note from CHAIRISH that they are cancelling the orders against the wishes of buyers and attempting to drop off items at origin. There is no excuse for such abhorrent, unethical business practice and I will pursue this until I am paid for my inventory, my store is back up on the platform and a letter of apology from CHAIRISH is in hand.
Chairish are no better than Craigslist, and charge 20% for the displeasure. There is NO seller protection. The buyer can click "buy" on an item, not schedule to pick up/delay and there is no penalty to the buyer.
Before accepting an offer, I asked Chairish what the timeline was. I was moving so this was important. They emailed me it must be picked up in five business days. The buyer agreed to meet the second day at 4pm. They canceled the meet 4 hrs before, offering to meet the third or 4th day. I wrote back to agree, then didn't hear back for a week. In that time, I could have moved the desk, but trusted in my contract with Chairish. Could have sold it to a CL buyer, but honored my Charish agreement.
Chairish states in their terms that if the buyer doesn't set up to meet within 5 days, additional charges could occur. They told me this isn't eligible for that. I asked what is, and was ignored.
In the end, all this incompetence caused me to have to discard this valuable desk that I already was selling for way lower than its value because, I suppose, Chairish does not drum up a lot of interest. It is a desk that is probably valued at over $800. But I had to lower it and keep it listed for about two months before anyone even offered me a lowball offer.
During the process they were incredibly rude. They aboid phone calls, they will only email you back. If you're persistent enough to get someone on the phone eventually, they are terse, and in one instance, a woman named Emily hung up on me.
