A few days ago I had a consultation to have my natural hair done at A&G Dominican Style Salon. Salon. I spoke to Annie. The reviews say she is a good stylist and to go to her for styling. Well, I get to the salon ten minutes early and was happy to wait for her to come at 11:00am. This is the time she told me she would be there. Instead, she came sauntering in at 11:20am. I did not say a word. She went to the back of this miniature salon and was basically doing nothing when she was informed by another hairdresser that I was waiting. STRIKE 1! As she came over to me it was clear that she did not remember she had an 11am appointment. STRIKE 2! She suggested Botox for my hair, which is for fine, limp hair. My hair is super coarse and is 4C. I didn't agree to it same day as I was not familiar with it and I said I would just do a wash and set. So she had someone else wash my hair and condition it, while another person rinsed it out. When I finally sat in her chair, she had sprayed some heat protectant on my hair and I asked how it would be dried. She stated that she was only using their blow dryer which is known to cause heat damage and was not an option for my natural hair. She stated this was the only way my hair could be straightened and that not straightening it would cause damage. STRIKE 3! Even more of an egregious statement was when Annie stated that the Dominican dryer does not cause damage on the first use. You are admitting it is damaging and saying the first time would be ok. LOL! Damage can occur from just one blowout. Her statements were utterly ridiculous and at that point, I realized Annie had very little knowledge about natural hair. After asserting that I would not be allowing her to use that blower, she charged me $25.00 for wash and conditioner and I left her salon with wet hair! I was disgusted and disappointed. So many reviews said she knew how to care for natural hair. When you state that using a damaging, drying Dominican blow dryer is the only option for straightening 4c hair, it is a clear indication that you are ill-equipped to handle natural hair. PERIOD!

The worst part of this experience is that this Dominican salon, like others, are largely based in black and brown neighborhoods. I looked around and saw 100% black and brown faces. Are you telling me that we are good enough for you to take our money but you are too lazy to learn simple techniques for drying and styling natural hair? It's lazy and disrespectful. If you value the health of your natural hair and do not use their stupid blowers, then avoid this salon.
