I've heard horror stories of people who have rented properties on line and when they got there discovered it was a scam. Any protection for renter?

We have been owners and renters through on line sources.
Contact the owner and ask for their phone number. Call them to make sure they exist.
Ask for names and phone numbers for previous guests.
Never pay through western union.
Confirm on Google Maps the property exists.
Ask the owner a lot of questions. If they are hesitant to answer or the answer doesn't make sense, don't book.
If it sounds too good to be true, find a legitimate rental.
