I'm ready to start the process of getting my idea patented. Will a provisional patent protect my idea until I get a non provisional patent

A provisional patent can "protect" your idea in the sense that it saves the date with the patent office, until you file the non-provisional patent application. The key is that you must file the non-provisional before the provisional expires for the provisional to continue to "protect" you.
