Hi Danny even though I have an account with Mate1, I have not upgraded my membership simply because the profile details of women are either too good to be true or are plain simple blank and bare. I have also at times encountered two different profiles registered under two separate names having the same profile picture! To check the quality of respondents on the site, I modified my profile description and added my email id to check whether I might by chance receive a couple of responses on my mail and as expected most of the girls who chose to respond claimed they were from the US but settled in some part of Africa, mostly they were from Ghana and Nigeria, which in essence screamed SCAM in big words and so I chose not to respond. In my estimation the site does not consist of a significantly large number of genuine profiles, so one has to be careful when you wish to upgrade because the chances of getting scammed is high since you have no way to verify the authenticity of the individual on the other side. However if you still want to give the site a fair try then here are some tips which might help you:
1. If you get a favourable response from any girl make it a point to invite them for a video conferencing session through sites like Skype, the objective being to ascertain the real identity of the individual in question. If she is true and genuine she wouldn't mind but if she tries her level best to avoid such a mode of communication then you can be sure she is not being completely truthful to you, an indication that it would be wise to avoid such a person.
2. Regarding your concern of being overcharged or not being able to cancel your subscription I have a simple solution which I follow religiously. I am from India and I am sure in any country when credit cards are issued they come with a credit limit which is offered by the bank based on your credibility & earning potential. Mostly banks offer individuals bigger credit limits in the ploy to ensure you use it regularly and they benefit from it, but for all my online shopping or for paying for subscriptions on such sites I have a credit card with the lowest credit limit by requesting for the same from the bank, with the sole motive being that in case I am excessively charged or my card details are compromised then due to a low credit limit my exposure to the fraud is restricted only my individual credit limit, so effectively I stand to lose only a small amount as against having one which runs into a few thousand dollars (rupees in my country), but as you understand it is not a full proof plan but nevertheless I am atleast assured that my card bills will not give me nightmares. That apart if the site does not comply with your request for cancellation of subscription you should approach your bank to get the card cancelled on the pretext of having misplaced it and most banks due to security reasons cancel cards if a request for misplacing it or accidentally losing it is reported. So if the card is cancelled so also will your subscription be terminated but should be attempted if the regular means of requesting for cancellation is not adhered to.

I do not know about the subscription fees but I know you can cancel before the 3 day trial period is up. That is what I did. As I stated in my review, it is bunk. Many woman claim they fell in love with me in the first day of texting with them. Most of the other women wanted me to subscribe to their online videocam sites, which they claim you do not have to pay, but is b. S. I'm sure there are some nice women on there, but I wouldn't waste my money. There are better dating sites.

I can not talk Re subscription fees as I am a female and therefore do not pay.
But personally I would not be recommending this site from my perspective.
I have been chatting to 4 guys who claim to be majors in the US Army.
I do not want to sound judgemental but their use of the English language is bizarre and 2 of them have sent numerous messages that are exactly the same.
One of them after 4 hours if texting asked me to marry him and look after his sons.
The others are heading that way in their conversation
Personally, I believe this will. Lead to one of these dating scams that you see on TV. Where woman are made to feel obliged to send money.
