It is easy to sort out whether a gold coin is indeed made of gold. Take the karat quality, a real Great American Buffalo coin is struck in. 9999 one troy ounce of gold. The coin should be weighed. A local reputable jewelry store should be able assess the quality of the gold. The Magnet test should also be done. Gold is not a magnetic element. So, if your gold coin sticks to a magnet, it is most likely either clad in gold leaf, over magnetic metal, or an outright counterfeit coin. Know your dealer who sells coins to you; see the negative feedback they have received from ebay and or etsy, or amazon for example. The American Gold Buffalo coin is a 1 troy ounce, $50 face value, 24-karat (\(0.9999\) fine) gold coin with a diameter of\(32.7\) mm, a thickness of\(2.95\) mm, and a reeded edge. Its purity, weight, and content are guaranteed by the U.S. government. There are fake non numismatic coins being sold, and as long as those coins are clearly stamped with the word "COPY" ON THEM, YOU WILL KNOW THEY ARE REPLICAS WITH NO PRECIOUS METALS.
