Members get cool stuff like members only items and animals as a reward for buying a membership. Otherwise, no one would buy a membership, so AJHQ wouldn't have any money and they wouldn't be able to keep running the game. However, there are some cool things for non-members as well; you might just have to look a little harder.

Because "cool things" require funding. Games dont just come to be. It takes a large team of skilled designers who need to eat, too.

Young kids believe this game is EVIL and that naive thinking makes me sad because this is just the FIRST experience kids will have will "money makes the world go around". Life works the same as animal jam's membership policy. Nothing is free and thats how it HAS to be. There simply isnt another way. We all give a little to get a little! :)
