Every year in October, the UK charity Film Education produces National Schools Film Week. This offers children all across the UK the opportunity to view and study movies which are based in subjects within the curriculum, both in class and at their local cinemas, and with consideration and support given even to those who have some sensory disabilities so that everyone can enjoy the experience.
The project is free to join, and only charges a minimal fee if a class fails to turn up to an event. It's a chance for teachers to explore the subject and issues raised in a movie in class both before and after viewing, and also serves to encourage children and older students to take a longer-term interest in cinema, beyond their home TV screens.
The project has met with mixed fortunes, internet-wise, since due to an unfortunate choice the acronym "NSFW" is also short for "not safe for work" and is much more widely known in that context as a both a description of, and a venue for, pornographic materials. On the other hand, it has probably provided this site with much more traffic than expected, some of whom might even possibly be teachers, who knows? In any case, please be sure to get the "dot org" part right, or if you don't mind typing it out in full, find the same content at http://www.nationalschoolsfilmweek.org.
