Literally hundreds of image generators are listed here, enough, I should think, to meet anyone's needs.
So what's an image generator? It's a browser-based application that puts your text into or over a pre-existing photograph, so that the end result looks as if your text was there all the time. Examples include road and warning signs, the banners held by protesters, writing on hands, covers of books, newspaper headlines, store signs, pretty much anywhere you would see text in real life situations. You can even write your name as a tattoo on someone's back, or other more interesting body areas.
You can then do whatever you like with the result, which for many people will be posting it to their MySpace or Facebook pages or their blogs or websites, where it will give their friends a jolly laugh. Alternatively you could use the image as a greetings or postcard. You get the idea.
Some of these generators are excellent and some are not, the best providing results that look entirely authentic. I found a tattoo generator that looked particularly good with a choice of fonts and colors, but I also came across a badge generator in which the text missed the empty space completely. Still, it's fun and free, and a bit compulsive too. A good coffee-break waster.
