  • Kids Bowl Free

1/12/13

www.kidsbowlfree.com is part of the AMF Bowling Lanes family. The website and summer prgram are for real! You register your kids with your (Parent) email address and you get emails/coupons/codes for free bowling games.

The site advertises -- and fulfills! -- 2 free games of bowling each day during the summer. The nice thing is you also get lots of coupons and specials during the rest of the year. Now, realize that 2 free games of bowling does not include shoe rental. Other specials include a set price for all you can bowl during a set period of time, discounts on birthday parties, food/bowling packages, etc.

This was a really great thing when my kids were smaller and we needed indoor things to do! Of course the caveat is you have to have an AMF Bowling alley around you!

  • CafePress

8/30/12

Just found cafepress and am so IMPRESSED with the huge selection of t's in hard to find topics. My example - one kid plays the tuba/sousaphone in band/marching band and you can find a million t's for the trumpet, piano or violin. A 'tuba' search got me a 2000+ item hit on cafepress. Then found another 1000+ for my writer kid!

Love it, fast shipping but always use a coupon code!

  • Edmund Scientific

12/12/11

Edmunds Scientifics is a site for science stuff -- kits, pieces and parts for microscopes, telescopes, magnets, prisms, root beer kits, etc. Lots of variety.

Love the vast array of stuff. Some is pricey but it is a great source!

  • GreatNonProfits

12/12/11

greatnonprofits.org was recommended by a magazine if you want to check out a charity before you donate to them. I was pretty underwhelmed by this site.

Once you put in the name of your charity/non-profit there is some basic info provided. The majority of the infor is comments via bulletin board posts made by anyone. You are asked to say if you are a volunteer, board member, chair person, etc. Well sorry, I can say anything I want about a charity but that doesn't make it true.

I recommend givewell.org instead as it provides facts and sources for its info.

  • GiveWell

12/12/11

givewell.org is a site to go to and see how a charity rates in terms of where its money goes.

LOVE the pie charts that show where money goes for any organization. There is a clear layout of activities, spending, and a bottom line recomendation for the charity, and it sites its sources.

Family Circle magazine recommended it as a place to go to and check on any charity you are thinkind of supporting. I am glad I did -- was planning on giving to a new and highly advertised charity. The article referening givewell.com was very timely in that I found out the charity was paying it's president and CEO more that $650,000! AND there was 30% of their donations that were unaccounted for. My charity $ should be spent better than that. I was also glad to see my other charities get a thumbs up on the recomendations!

  • Target

10/12/11

Overall, I really like Target the store. It is where I prefer to do my home/book/cleaning/toy etc. shopping. The prices are reasonable and the selection quite large and diverse. The stores are well laid out, look good and you don't feel like your in a discount-building.

That being said, one thing the_stores_ need to fix is their supposed price matching. It is advertised in huge banners that they will match any ad price (and you have to bring the ad). Ok, bringing the ad is easy. I have_never_ had Target actually honor this policy. What it doesn't state is that the ad cannot have a quantity limit, date limit, be a 'special 'buy' -- there is always *something* that prevents them from actually matching a price. POOR service and misleading advertising especially when other stores WILL match the same ad.

The website is ok. Lots and lots of stuff but the search engine needs work. You get hundreds of results that don't match the search criteria. I especially hate having to search multiple areas for the same stuff: I shouldn't have to go search KIds and Games and Leisure and Clearance to find some puzzles!

But, the on line clearance items are amazing! WOW on the bargains.

I do like the wedding registry on Target.com but think that if I'm buying off the registry it should be sent to the bride/broom for free. I only buy items that are shipped free or I go to another store that ships wedding gifts without charging me. I also wish ALL the items in the registry were available for purchase through the website. If I/gift-givers don't have a Target in our town, I can't give those items. Frustrating.

Lots of good, some bad, hence the 3 out of 5.

  • UncommonGoods

10/12/11

Uncommon goods has some really unique and interesting products: laser pointers, recycled items made into jewelry, pill cases, baby items, wallets & bags, decorations, games, crafts, plates & bowls, glasses, & lots more. This really is my 'go to' spot for the really-hard-to-buy for people in my life!

I think some of the prices are on the high side, but I love the sales!

Fun, quirky, unique! Very good customer service, too!

  • Bank of America

9/27/11

We have been BOA customers for years with little to no problems. We always go to the smaller branch office near our home and know the tellers and personal bankers and they recognize us. We are also good customers -- we don't bounce checks, don't miss cc payments, don't demand unrealistic perks, come informed and prepared for discussions. We also have concentrated our accounts (and let them know it) so we don't pay a single dollar in fees.

Regarding the website -- I am very, very pleased with the online transfer and bill pay features. The bill pay is by far the best feature of the website, imho, as you can select a larger-well known company and have all the mailing info provided or you can enter your own pay-to person/company. We have never had a payment go missing or late and they guarantee the payments -- if something happens on their end that causes a late payment, they will cover any penalty fees.
Been using online bill pay for_years_ and have not found a better or more comprehensive bill paying service. Though I do recommend keeping all tracking numbers, we have never had a problem.

Check out all the banks and find what fits your needs. We personally recommend Bank of America.

[Just a quick story about knowing the tellers and them recognizing us -- my kids were collecting state quarters for a 50-state quarter map and I mentioned to the teller that we were missing 7 of the 100 quarters. She wrote down the 7 missing ones, gave it to all the tellers, and they collected the quarters for us over the next 2 weeks! Asked me at the drive thru if I could come into the bank because they had a surprise for us! I took a picture of my kids with their completed maps and sent it as a thank you! It IS about customer service and our branch is amazing!]

  • FileHippo

9/27/11

Excellent site! Agian, like other reviewers I thought it was too good to be true.

My father pointed me at this site -- he runs a pc update and fix-it business! He recommended I remove an older program that cleans up the system (deleted cookies, tracking software, etc.) He not only recommended certain programs but highly recommend to get them through filehippo.

Free, dependable, and no registering! 100% recommended!

  • ThriftBooks

9/27/11

Love, love, love thirftbooks.com This site links a number of used bookstores and all their inventory. The listed prices_include shipping_ so you know exactly what you are paying with no nasty surprises at checkout. I am sick and tired of finding an older/used book and getting to the check out page to find the shipping costs are 3x the book cost!

You can navigate their menu tree by book genre or search by author or title. A search result shows you all the available copies of the book. From that search you can narrow down by hard/paperback, price, book condition. Excellent search capabilities.

Another nice surprise is if you order 2 books from the same location (listed in all search results) you get an additional $. 50 off per book. Nice.

I've purchased from here for years, from sites all over the country and have always been pleased that the items showed up on time (or earlier) and have been in the condition as described.

Highly recommended.

  • Filters Fast

9/27/11

This is a website that sells filters: water filters, furnace filers, humidifer filters, etc. LOTS and lots of brands and models. Best part of the site is the search engine and the prices!

The searche engine is great -- you can put in brand name, model number, part number, or search via their menu trees to get to where you need.

The prices are amazing. Found this site by accident when our furnace company considered our furnace filters "non-standard" and started charging a way-above-standard price! I found the same filters for 1/3 of the cost! I also found our humidifier filters and refrigerator water filters here so it's all one stop (inexpensive) shopping.

Fast shipping, never any problems after 5 years!

  • Rugs Direct

2/21/11

Mixed review on this site. They sell area rugs and lots of them. They have all the name brands and all available colors and sizes. We found the rugs we wanted and looked them up by manufacterer and name.

Very good on the prices. If your order goes without a hitch this website is a fantastic find.

Medium to low on the customer service. If you have a little problem, prepare to invest some time to get it fixed.

Example: We placed an order and they shipped us the wrong rug. It had the tag on it for the rug we ordered but it was the wrong rug (wooo - some ugly seashell thing!). We took pictures of the tag and the pattern and sent them with our order # and what went wrong. It took 11 emails before I had my husband call and talk to a person (who wanted us to wait 3 days to talk to our e-mail contact) and then a supervisor. The supervisor was great and ordered a return kit and ordered our correct rug. It shouldn't take that many communications to get problems fixed.

  • Overstock.com

2/21/11

Never had a problem. We have bought DVDs, CDs, patio umbrellas, storage bins, rolling closet racks, leather coat, and earrings. We were never in a hurry for anything but also never had any order that was long on ship time. I do check here for comparison pricing -- sometimes great, sometimes not. Always worth a look around though.

  • Nintendo

2/21/11

LOVE this website. Got referred to it from our Wii gaming system(!) which gave us an error code and this website name. We actually used the owner's manual and followed all their steps to get things set up/connected. But life is always more complicated than the owners manual.

This site has an option for chat help that actually features REAL PEOPLE! Been greatly ticked off at sites that use (supposed) artificial intelligence chat interactions. Nintendo even used a temporary software download to control my pc and speed up the identify-the-problem-process.

Excellent site for troubleshooting with lookup possible by error codes. But, a real person beats an error code lookup any day!

  • Feet Relief

9/17/10

Excellent selection of shoes, inserts, and insoles. Lots of varieties of shoes for those with feet problems and those without!

If you have a shoe/foot problem there are tons of options available through this site. The prices are very reasonable for the items - still expensive for the specialty stuff, but less expensive than usual. I had to go to a specialty store and get measured for some insoles -- $78 for one pair in the store. I found the exact same brand, style, size for $38 at feet relief.

Excellent products, fast shipping, and good customer service.

  • Coldwater Creek

9/17/10

Love it, love it, love it. The clothing from Coldwater Creek is first rate -- excellent quality and size range. There is no upcharge in prices for petite, women's, or tall clothing. The organization of the website is very good and so are the search criteria (you can search by size, color, just pants, only casual dresses, etc) -- it makes navigating and specific item searhes very easy.

I love the website a little more than the regular catalogues and stores due to the selection. Coldwater Creek tends to take a color palate and use it for a season. So if their palate is red/black/white and you love those colors, you will find the majority of the clothing to your liking for that season. However, if the color palate is orange/green/tan and you don't like that, there isn't much else available. This is where the website comes in. It is great to be able to look at styles and colors from the previous season(s) in addition to the current season's merchandise.

The customer service at Coldwater Creek is amazing! They obviously take their customer's satisfaction seriously -- and they work at making the customer happy. The telephone reps are wonderfully informed and can and will search not only warehouse but store inventories to find the right size/color for particular items that you want.

An amazing but true story, I purchased a very fancy evening dress for a charity event that didn't fit. When I called to order a different size, there were none left in the warehouse. The customer service rep took down my name, phone number, item number and size and said she'd check store inventories every now and then to see if someone returned this dress in my size. 3 weeks later I got a call from that rep that a dress in my size had turned up in a store in another time zone! Did I want it? YES! The other store called me, took my credit card number and shipped the dress to me the next day!

One last thing about the website, sign up for e-mail alerts! E-mail alert customers often get 1 day notice before the general public about sales (for example take 50% off everything on the website!), free shipping, and clearance markdowns.

Excellent company, excellent website.

  • MayoClinic

8/16/10

mayoclinic.com is a great website for information from REAL doctors (most of which are or were on staff at mayo).

Dependable information for regular people written (mostly) in regular English. The symptom checker is quite good, but like the previous reviewer, needs to be taken as suggestion and not fact! The symptom checker has you focus in on a single area of the body and then select potential symptoms. A list of possible conditions are presented for further consideration. Not guaranteed -- but a good place to start for questions.

The information listed for known condition names is great. I was pointed to this website from a pulmonologist who didn't want me out searching crappy websites on my own! He knew I wanted information and wanted to be sure I was looking into medical facts and not junk-info posted by any joker with a computer. There is a lot of scary false info on the web and no-one wants or needs to be oncered by false info. The information on coniditions/diseases is factual, listed in "chapters" so you can to directly to where you need, and often does refer to you see a doctor!

The symptom checker gets a B+, the condition/disease info gets an A.

  • eBags

8/11/10

Updated review from June 2022. I have to change my review from 5 * to 1*. Ebags seems to have been purchased by Samsonite. The site and service has suffered! The site still have ebags products and Samsonite products.
BUT with 3 orders (1 as a guest and 2 thru my account) NOT ORDER CONFIRMATION email is sent. You have no order number, no confirmation of order, and no way to check status. There is now NO CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE NUMBER available on the website. Btw, to to google and type in "ebags customer service phone number" and you will get it. I emailed customer service twice with no response.

This one amazing company is now a big Don't Order. Sad.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ebags is an amazing place for luggage, bags and backpacks. Biggest names in luggage are out there in sets and individually. If you compare prices this site is a must!

I personally have to recommend ebags own brand of luggage, rolling duffels, and backpacks. Amazing quality, fantastic design, durable and sturdy construction and most of the pieces come with a lifetime warranty! We ordered 4 rolling suitcases for an extended air trip (where we each got one and only bag to bring). Ebags cases were so brilliantly set up and came with inserts to divide the larger storage areas if needed. Incredible strong wheels and pull handles! Can't recommend them highly enough.

This is the site I use for all my luggage purchases. I am a big comparison shopper and will look at deals from local brick stores and every online site I trust. I come back to ebags every time!

  • Walgreens

8/11/10

Love it! Lots of everyday products, health items, cosmetics, and odd things that are fabulously priced. Lots and lots of selection!

Our family has ordered cosmetics, eye drops that were no longer carried by our local stores, facial massagers, pillow chilling inserts, vitamins, lotions, and (believe it or not) mashmallow shooters! (Found those by accident but really cheap compared to other sites!)

FAST shipping, excellent, service, great selection, personal items come wrapped so no embarassing box-opening scenarios!

  • HerRoom

8/11/10

HerRoom specializes in women's lingerie, bras, undergarments, and sleepwear. In addition to well known name brands for women they offer a very limited amount of men's underwear. My best use of this website was to come in with a brand or style I was trying to find and price compare. They often have great sales, too.

I was a little surprised at some of the racier lingerie that was out there, but since it's been out there for years, they obviously have filled a need.

One service note that surprised the heck out of me was, I returned an item and left a not-so-great review of it. A website rep left a comment after mine telling me that based on my needs/requirements that this was the wrong garment and I should try item #123.

Pretty impressive response.
