  • Therapy Shoppe

12/21/09

I couldn't bring myself to trust or buy from another online therapy store. The Therapy Shoppe came recommended to me by a friend/colleague. The materials are as affordable as you can find them anywhere else, online or in store. (And if you find them anywhere else for cheaper, chances are they won't last you for very long). The 10 things I purchased were shipped within 2 days of my purchase, and they arrived on time and as promised.

  • Newegg

12/21/09

I was a Newegg virgin up until a week ago when I placed an order for four cameras for my school. Of course I'd heard that Newegg was unbeatable in terms of its selection of new and refurbished goods as well as in its service. So it was no surprise that I also had an easy shopping experience. The cameras came in tip top condition.

  • Funny Or Die

10/25/09

Everytime I remember to visit this website, whether it's to get my fill of Will Arnett, to see what happens when Matthew McConaughey can't get his shirt off, or to watch James Franco (underratedly funny) impersonate Justin Bobby from the Hills, I end up completely worshipping it. Most things here are hits rather than misses.

  • Austin City Limits

10/23/09

Austin has a great music scene, and Austin City Limits, the show, for years and years has been featuring the amazing artists that come through the city. Whether or not it's a band that you're normally into or not, ACL turns any band into your favorite.

  • ADDitude

10/20/09

Attitude Mag online is a nice website for parents and professionals who are new to learning about and living/working with children/adults with attention deficits and learning disabilities. It offers easy to access articles and tips for life, school and work. You can find out more about treatments, medicine and behavioral interventions which are all pretty well-updated.

  • Stuff on my Cat

10/12/09

I really couldn't tell you what makes Stuff on my Cat so appealing to me. I love cats because they're easy-going enough to let you pile just about anything on top of them but they're also irritable enough to make sure you know they're not enjoying it. With almost 4000 posts, you can find cats covered by almost anything - remote controls (a popular one), beer cans, costumes, dishes, etc.

  • Enchanted Learning

10/11/09

For educators, Enchanted Learning is much like Edhelper but even less organized, if that's even possible. The subscription is $20 a year for downloads of worksheets, mini-books, units, etc., but if you already have Edhelper (which seems much more extensive), Enchanted Learning is basically unnecessary.

  • Raz-kids

10/11/09

Raz-kids allows teachers to easily create homework and an incentive for reading. Linked to Readingatoz.com (they share some of the same books also), Raz-kids allows you and students to see/hear the book read out loud, to record yourself reading (with vocabulary and pronunciation help), to print some worksheets linked to the book and to take an online quiz. As a teacher, you can see your students' progress charts, quiz scores, etc. When the students complete all their tasks, they get points which can be used to "buy" things for their "raz rocket".

Assigning the work can be tricky, as there's a lot of clicking around to be done (you choose the sequence, which can be time-consuming if you individualize instruction like we do). And at about $80 a year, this is also expensive but worth it if you want to encourage reading and help kids learn that homework can be fun too.

  • Reading A-Z

10/11/09

Reading A to Z is a pretty indispensable website that helps teachers plan their reading lessons. The website has hundreds of leveled reading books and phonics lessons (which I have used successfully). Each book comes with the whole set of lesson plans, making it super easy for a teacher to plan and implement reading classes. The subscription price is $80 per year, which sounds pricey but may be worth it, especially if you are lacking real books in your school. Reading A to Z has a bunch of sister websites too (Vocabulary A to Z, Science A to Z, etc.) but each comes with its own price, so that can get expensive.

  • edHelper

10/11/09

Edhelper is full of ready-made worksheets, mini-books, activities, whole units etc. for levels from pre-k to high school. Teachers love Edhelper because they can supplement their activities and create homework easily. The subscription is $20 a year and $40 a year for all levels, up to high school. It's pretty worthwhile. I only wish the website was better presented (cleaner, better organized).

  • BulkNutrition

10/11/09

This place looks sketchy, but it's actually a good place to get your vitamins and supplements. You can find nearly any kind of supplement you're looking for, and for cheaper prices than GNC. Shipping prices are reasonable. The most impressive aspect of this company is in its dedicated customer service. If there's a problem, they'll call you, and when you call them, there's always someone available to respond. One warning: this is not the place to go to research products. Every product description will boast of making you into Hulk Hogan. But if you already know what you need, the prices are good and the customer service is excellent.

  • Michel Thomas Method

10/10/09

When I moved to Guatemala for my job, I needed to learn Spanish quickly. Rosetta Stone was way too repetitive, dull and tedious. Pimsleur as well. I came across Michel Thomas's method, by chance, and cannot think of any other way to learn a language. Known as the language teacher to the stars, Michel Thomas has a method that I connected to instantly - one could say it's kind of based on fuzzy logic at times. Generally, though, the method breaks up a language into pieces, and through seemingly real lessons with real folks, Thomas presents those pieces to you in a way that builds on your previous knowledge. By the end of a track, you've learned something new and can apply it in everyday conversation. I still have yet to get through my advanced lessons, but it's clear there's a sequence (present tense, basic sentences to past/past participle sentences with varying structures, etc.) and any repetition is deliberate and purposefully layered on things previously learned in the course.

  • Colorincolorado

10/5/09

Colorincolorado.org is an excellent resource for Spanish-speaking families and teachers of English Language Learners. It has a wealth of articles, resources, guides, etc. for parents and for teachers to communicate with Spanish-speaking parents. It was created/funded by the American Federation of Teachers and has the most up-to-date research on reading instruction for ELLs. I often go to this website first if I need to find Spanish articles on testing, reading as a family, etc. to send home to my families. Everything is in English and in Spanish.

  • Minnesota State University,

10/4/09

The speech therapy section of the Minnesota State University website (http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster2/sptherapy.html) has a more than extensive list of speech and language therapy ideas. The list is so extensive that it can be overwhelming at times, but it covers every area of speech and language therapy of that you can think of: articulation, fluency, speech sounds, prosody, etc. It provides websites for more information about various speech/language difficulties, activities and interactive websites that can support your interventions. Really nice collection of sites that just could be organized to make it more manageable for teachers and therapists.

  • Zamzar

9/19/09

Zamzar's a great place to convert documents from one application to another. I don't have Publisher on my computer so when I received a document with the *. Pub extension, I used Zamzar to convert it into a word document. The problem was the formatting, but at least I was able to retrieve the content.

  • Iguama

9/15/09

Okay, I have no idea how many folks here need to use a website that is exclusive to Guatemala but I wanted to give this website the props it deserves. Getting things shipped from the U.S. to here is not easy; the taxes that must be paid, the pick-up process, the high probability that you might not really get it, etc. can make it a hassle. Iguama has been a godsend. You can order anything and get it brought to your doorstep for some extra dollars more. I got a book I ordered within a week of buying it. Really nice service for those of us here!

  • Audible

8/31/09

I was desperate to find an audio copy of Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything and didn't want to take the risk of downloading it from one of the many sites that are likely to be scams. So I decided to try Audible.com. With the "free 30-day trial", the $40 book would be free, and that I believe. However, when I discovered I would have to download an Audible manager and that would be the only way to listen to the book on my computer, I decided to bust out of that popsicle stand. To their credit, I was able to cancel my subscription easily. It should also be noted that there are other ways to listen to, on your phone, IPOD, etc., but as well, you have to download special audible software.

  • Scribd

8/30/09

Scribd.com used to be a great website when you could download books and resources. Enter the New York Times, which called the website out in May in an article about books' being illegally uploaded. Since then, the site has become a dumping ground for college essays and second-rate novels. However, for my educator purposes, I can sometimes find good materials like activity books for the kids or resources about autism for Spanish-speaking parents.

  • 4AD.com

8/25/09

4AD is a British independent record label that represents bands like blonde redhead, beirut, camera obscura, mountain goats, m. Ward, etc. (some only in europe). The website has some great songs to download usually, especially because the label represents some stellar bands. For news and updates, though, I'd use Pitchfork. 4AD's blog/journal at journal.4ad.com features some mouth-watering acoustic performances, interviews and band updates.

  • Songza.fm

8/23/09

I'm devoted to last.fm but decided to give songza.fm a try. There's something I like about it but I can't pinpoint just what that is. The interface is super simple and some of the songs come with the appropriate, accompanying Youtube video. There are basically no frills, and if you just want to hear your favorite bands streaming, then songza may be a good resource.

T Has Received 1 Thank You

Leigh Roberts T. thanked you for your review of DO Lectures

“Thanks t. It all looks very nice until you realise they are selling a tent in a field and a talk in a tatty old barn for thousands. And chance to buy their jeans. Very clever, that. Is it worth the money? Or is it all a bit smug and clever clever?”
