I only just saw a segment on CNN about this website. I love the idea - trade in your old electronic items for cash so that these guys can refurbish them or reuse the parts. You wouldn't get much for these items (I found my Canon Powershot S50 which is still in good condition would receive $5; the newer the models, the more you get, though) but at least you're recycling and finding something to do with this stuff. If your item isn't worth anything to them, they'll still recycle it for free. Not bad either. And shipping is always free. Who doesn't have that stash of old electronic items that you feel too bad to trash but also aren't sure what to do with?

If you like Chuck Norris facts or are all about Ron Paul, you may like Ron Paul Facts. Most of them are pretty meh, but there are occasional winners. Did you know that the Declaration of Independence is printed with Ron Paul's blood? Or that Ron Paul is so fast he can steal home plate, but his conscious won't let him do it? If you want to know more, check out the website.

What a great find, thanks to Stacy T! I bought some Zoobies for my little nieces at a great price. I signed up for the alerts, which I wish Woot would have, and soon there will be kidsteals.com too. Can't wait...

  • KandleKidsWear

I'm not gonna lie, my friend/former college roommate is one of the two women behind this business of creating adorable organic cotton t-shirts and onesies with original felt designs. I bought 2 onesies and a shirt from Kandle Kidswear recently for some friends' kids, and although these clothes are admittedly not my personal style (I don't do onesies anymore), I was really pleased by how well-made and very cute these pieces are. More importantly, my friends loved these gifts. I'd definitely buy more of them in the future. Kim and Laura, the owners, are great to interactive with and responsive. As well, you can tell they put a lot of care into each piece.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch

8/7/09

I'm not an Abercrombie shopper at all. However, I love good, well-fitted pants that last, and Abercrombie has those. My favorite pair of pants was actually a pair of Abercrombie ones that lasted from 2002 until 2009. But it's just a hole that I have to fix and then it'll be back on the streets for another 8 years. This is another place where you definitely want to know what your size is there before purchasing, though. Don't trust the size chart, venture into that obnoxious store first and then you're good to go online. Shipping is fast and returns are free by mail or in-store.

  • Anthropologie

8/6/09

Anthropologie is definitely a girl's store. It's filled with patterns and chiffons and all things pretty. I'm more of an Urban Outfitters girl (both are owned by the same folks) but I'm obsessed with good sturdy pants, and Anthropologie's got the goods! Shopping at anthropologie.com is nice because you don't have to deal with suburban socialites knocking you over to get to the tube tops. The only thing to be careful about is, just as with Urban, sizes run differently according to each brand. So it's a good idea to know what size you are in this or that brand before getting it online. Both stores have a great new reviews feature, however. So be sure to read the other customers' reviews to find out if the sizes run big or small, if something feels cheaper than you think, etc.

  • SideReel

8/5/09

Sidereel.com is the only place that I could find and actually watch episodes of Top Chef and Weeds. While other websites didn't allow me to access shows in Guatemala, good ole Sidereel came through for me. It's great to be able to choose from a variety of links that are available and working as well.

  • Knock Knock

8/5/09

I've bought a lot of items from Knock Knock in the past. This place is full of novelty items that are fun and completely useless, such as pre-printed post-it notes that start with "Just Thought You Should Know: (checkboxes for something smells, this sucks, check your teeth, you're too loud, everybody knows, you rock) and a space to elaborate". There are other things like large checklists for beer rating, paper voodoo pads, labeled file folders (to check off whether it is something to be done "in the near future, when I feel like it, against my will, by somebody else or never"), slang flashcards, etc. Completely useless but a lot of fun to have around in case the occasion arises that you might need to give your boyfriend a "things you must do to make me happy" checklist. The website gives free shipping on orders over $50 and is completely reliable.

  • Muxtape

8/3/09

Muxtape has ceased to be what it once was. Due to RIAA issues, it is not longer where you can find random strangers' mixtapes. Instead it's now a platform for new artists looking for a place to be heard. You can hear new tracks from mostly relatively obscure bands (except for a couple). I really like the simple design but wish there were more descriptions of the bands (what kind of music it is, who their influences are, something). However, I also appreciate the website's forcing me to go beyond my musical comfort zone. Here's where to find all the bands: http://muxtape.com/directory

  • Ze's Page

8/2/09

Ze Frank is one of those guys who likes to sit in the middle of technology and art to see what he can do to combine both. On his website zefrank.com, he explores all sorts of ideas and shares them all through his creations of programs, games, "educational" videos, etc. Some products are really interesting/entertaining. A lot is interactive. He asks for participation, and this can lead to really varied and interesting perspectives. One of his innovations is the scribbler, which turns anyone's crappy scribblings into "art": http://www.zefrank.com/scribbler/

I love TED (stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design but has moved beyond just those perspectives). TED believes in "Ideas Worth Spreading" and presents various talks, all available online, by geniuses and leaders on different topics. Every speaker has an idea, invention or innovation to share, and I find each one utterly fascinating, even if they come from perspectives I've never even considered. If you like Charlie Rose, Democracy Now, NPR, etc you might like TED. An excellent and engaging talk (and one of my favorites) is one by Sir Ken Robinson on how schools kill creativity in children: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html

  • Usable Knowledge

7/31/09

Usable Knowledge is a website designed by Harvard's Graduate School of Education to link practice with research by presenting research in more appetizing ways. Being out of school prevents me from being able to access educational journals as easily as I'd like to. Usable Knowledge is a great site to not only be able to read about the latest breakthroughs and findings in education by some pretty smart folks, but it gives me research in a shorter and friendlier way.

  • Pandora

7/30/09

I like the simplicity of Pandora's design while also offering more technical information about recommended music. However, two things: 1) Pandora doesn't work outside of the United States and 2) It has a fairly limited range, as compared to last.fm. Last.fm seems to offer more variety across all genres. Perhaps I've developed a devotion to last.fm already but I rarely find new bands on Pandora.

  • Aldaily

7/30/09

Arts & Letters Daily gathers interesting news stories; reviews of art, music and film; editorials and opinions from various print and web sources like the NYTimes, Guardian, weblogs, The Onion, Slate, etc. and puts it all onto one website. It looks scholarly and bland, but It's actually a nice overview of the world and worth exploring if you have interest in what's going on in all sorts of places.

  • Tudou

7/30/09

Tudou is a Chinese video sharing website, the Chinese Youtube, if you will. When I can't access episodes of Project Runway or Top Chef anywhere due to networks' restrictions, I can find it on Tudou. What's even better is that sometimes the episodes are loaded on one video rather than on several videos. They also have full-length feature films.

  • Poketo

7/29/09

Poketo.com has a lot of adorably hip t-shirts, bags, houseware that look like they come straight from Japan (but are actually made in the U.S.). Some of the tees (100% cotton) are pricey and others are pricier; the designs of the shirts are actually taken from original artwork At first touch, the t-shirts are as soft as a baby's bottom, but after several washings, the design fades, and the shirt itself gets pilly and is not so soft anymore. The company does well with website purchases, is responsive and ships the next day.

  • Isokinetics inc

7/29/09

Isokineticsinc.com is a place to get products for exercise, rehabilitation, or in my case, for children with special needs. They have great things like therabands, balance boards, hand exercisers, easier to catch slow-motion balls, etc. I bought 6 balance cushions (at an extremely reasonable price) for my school. The company sent me several emails to update me on the status of my order, and the 6 cushions came 3 business days later by FedEx. The cushions are of excellent quality and Isokinetics will be a company I use in the future for procuring equipment for my kids' sensory needs.

  • FailBlog

7/28/09

If you like ICanHasCheezburger and are also fond of stamping things with your "PWNED" stamp, then you might like the Failblog (by the makers of ICan). It's a collection of photos, videos, news clippings that depict failures or soon-to-be failures. Many aren't laugh out loud funny, but some are just amusing enough to make that break from work worthwhile.

  • Queens Library

7/28/09

The Queens Library website looks like it would be a great resource for those folks who can physically visit it. The best part about the website is that it offers the Tumblebooks service (normally a couple hundred bucks) for free. Tumblebooks are e-books for children, and the site also has some books for adolescents. However, the e-books are wonderful for little ones up to age 13 or so, as all the illustrations are shown and usually the readers are quite good. My students love Tumblebooks, and I love the Queens Library for providing this service for free! Tumblebooks are here: http://www.queenslibrary.org/index.aspx?section_id=16&page_id=314

  • Honolulu Cookie

7/28/09

Cookies from Honolulu Cookie Company are delicious and make great gifts. I was introduced to them through a family member who gave a gift box to my then boyfriend and I for some reason that I can't remember now. Either way, I love shortbread cookies, and these are supreme (the company refers to them as "gourmet"). They come in different flavors (coconut, mango, different coffee flavors, hazelnut, etc.), and the little pieces of coffee bean or mango in the center of the cookie are an added delight. I would say these are kind of pricey cookies, but they are really excellent. Each cookie is individually wrapped and all come in very pretty boxes that can be reused for storing old cards, pencils, etc. Ordering from the website is easy, and even though they're shipped from Hawaii, they come fast, ready to be consumed!

Leigh Roberts T. thanked you for your review of DO Lectures

“Thanks t. It all looks very nice until you realise they are selling a tent in a field and a talk in a tatty old barn for thousands. And chance to buy their jeans. Very clever, that. Is it worth the money? Or is it all a bit smug and clever clever?”
