I recently reactived a long-dormant account, and now I remember why I never really did any work for them. After going through a lengthy proposal process for a job that pays way less than minimum wage, and then not landing a project, I'm disinclined to waste my time. Clients who want the absolute lowest price And Pulitzer Prize-winning content may need to rethink their priorities.

The copy editors are very inconsistent when evaulating work. You're never quite sure what kind of reaction you're going to get, even though you've written a couple of hundred articles and you are pretty sure about how things are supposed to be done. At least they've gotten rid of the really rude and arrogant ones. CEs can no longer hide behind a cloud of anonymity when they insult you. The site supposedly pays twice per week, but there is often a lag time of three or four days for article acceptance. I've been writing for them off and on since late 2008. It used to be a good site to write for. Now, it's barely worth my time.

I've written off and on for Textbroker since 2008. The company pays on time every week. For the most part, the editors are okay. Once in a while I've run into an overbearing one, but they don't last long. I've had some terrific clients and I've had some really bad ones. With some experience, it's easy to spot the ones who will insist on revision after revision and still reject an article -- which has happened to me three times in six years.The pay scale is way below pathetic, one or two cents per word, so complaints about the quality of the writing fail to move me to wailing and gnashing my teeth. I've been a writer and editor for more than 20 years. Take a tip from the military. "You can have it fast, you can have it cheap, or you can have it good. Pick any two."
