  • Minecraft

I recently read a review about Minecraft which you can get from minecraft.net. I had seen several people on sitejabber review Lego or block type of games and never really understood what the hype was all about. Here is a link to the IGN video: Minecraft: I don't get it. http://pc.ign.com/articles/116/*******p1.html
If you ever played with legos in your childhood, you owe it to yourself to watch this video and see if it is worth a quick download to relive the lego days. Parents with children who play with lego should also take a look at the video and see if it might appeal to your children.

The best part seems to be that people can share their minecraft/lego creations with each other. This guy created a Call of Duty FPS in the minecraft world.

Great indie game that deserves a full heart for managing to amass such a following (700,000 facebook likes to date) in an era of big budget gaming.

It has been a long time since I built my own pc but I do remember it being significantly cheaper than buying online. Currently when you configure your system through a major company you are seemingly paying much more than if you just bought it off the shelf. This company is located around the corner from where I grew up and has a real address/phone etc which is rare these days for internet companies. I took a look at their prices and they were far below what is currently being sold at retail for the same specifications. If you are looking to buy a new computer, I would recommend seeing what your money will get you at a larger internet retailer such as Dell, gateway, sony, HP and then compare the specs to what you can get here. You might be able get some significant upgrades for not much more money. Often times upgrading a HD will cost you hundreds extra... here an upgrade to 1.5TB cost an additional $26 from what I saw... Just try finding that deal on other more commercial sites.

  • Voice123

This website is like a search engine for voice over talent and it does attract some great voice over artists. You can hear samples of their work online and get quotes for projects fairly easily. If you are looking exclusively for voice over work, I think going to sites like this is better than some of the sites that have a combination of acting/voice overs.

  • Slidebomb

4/20/11

I was doing a search for Zooey Deschanel and somehow came across Slidebomb.com. Very interesting way to share information around a given subject. You can compile throughout the web images, videos and links around a given topic and easily share it with others. Clearly designed to be viral I hope their efforts pay off and people start using this site.

  • Logitech

Going to give logitech big props and a full heart for their move to dominate the webcam/video conferencing market. Their Vid HD consumer service which is free and works with their inexpensive HD webcams or google TV really is quite impressive at their 720p resolution. The significantly more expensive offerings from other companies such as cisco can do 1080p, but I'm not sure that most will even notice it and not every one has a 1080p display (1920 x 1080) or a webcam that can support that resolution. The Vid HD service will work with other webcams that are not made by logitech too. They have a very simple interface and I think their partnership with googleTV should help them grow. Skype also has 720p as their "HD" version. I do wonder which company will be the first to offer true 1080p resolution for free. See lazy link below for more info

Anyone who remembers playing games on those floppy disks on a Commodore 64 will love the revival of this brand. I remember that commodore was the big rival of apple back in the day. Of course they include an emulator to play all of the old c64 games. If playing labyrinth doesn't bring back some memories then this is probably not the system for you...
Labyrinth video for your viewing enjoyment.

  • XFINITY TV Go

4/7/11

I had been considering saving some money and cutting out cable tv (specifically comcast) and instead getting a subscription to netflix/hulu/amazon for my movie and tv shows. It was about a combination of cutting costs and being able to watch shows at work, while commuting, and even at starbucks. The deal changer was comcast releasing their xfinity streaming service that works on any pc and my ipad. Now, I can access HBO/MAX/Starz premium shows, network television and on demand movies all because I have a subscription to comcast... and I can access their content anywhere I have an internet connection. This means instead of cancelling comcast and going to the net for my media, I am considering upgrading my comcast and adding premium channels so I can take it on the go with me and probably will no longer be renting dvds. Nice move comcast. The only negative part is their site is still a little buggy especially on chrome, but I have faith they will soon fix those issues.

I ate at Nobu in vegas and the black cod miso was probably one of the most amazing dishes I have ever had a chance to taste. I did some research online on how to make it and came across this food blog. Vienna who writes this blog lets both her charisma and love of food show through and they have some great recipes including what I was looking for... black cod miso. I'm going to be waiting for her to start doing some video blogging so we can all watch her prepare some of these tasty dishes.

  • Tablo TV

JetstreamHD is just the device I have been waiting for that allows you to view any media (movies, music, photos, etc) that you have stored on your hard drives at home to be view on your ipad anywhere you go. It connects to your router and then instantly finds the media. Instant access to your media without any upfront work is pretty much what we all want. I will admit I do not own this yet and it is still on pre order but the concept alone makes me give it a full heart and I will follow up with more details once I have this device at home. The main concern will be how you can find all of the media at home and how easy it is to search through it all.

  • Kickstarter

The basic concept of this site is creative artists getting funding for their projects through pledges. I found some really interesting projects where people had pledged thousands of dollars to help the artist achieve their dream. Great concept and I do hope sites like this succeed and give artists their shot at creating their projects.

With all of the coupon craziness out there on the internet these days and daily deal sites popping up like weeds, it is refreshing to see a site like this which just simply aggregates together all of the coupon needs you may have on groceries. For just a few minutes of time, you could easily be saving a few bucks on things you buy every week.

I first saw this artist on a video while looking at my facebook page. I highly recommend watching his video

Pretty funny stuff with a great voice and Only Won has some really clever lyrics in there as well.

Very useful suite of services to protect your kids and family. The most useful application is the one where your kids just have to push a button to check in and then you know their GPS location. Great value and I highly recommend this site.

  • The American Academy of Audiology

1/21/11

For those experiencing hearing loss, it is easy to get overwhelmed with information. Many sites are out to just make a buck selling hearing aids to those who are in need. This website is by the American Academy of Audiology and serves as a great information resource for both patients and healthcare professionals. They can help you find an audiologist and have information on hearing aids and implants.

  • Amazon

1. Video On Demand: they are trying to compete with netflix/itunes/etc, but here is the problem... while they do have a great selection and reasonable prices the quality of the video cannot even begin to compare to that of netflix or itunes right now. Plus they somehow lack the ability to buffer the video, so if your connection slows during playback the entire video stops. This never has happened to me on netflix or itunes. Did I mention this was on a T1 line? They give you the option to download the movie to your PC if the connection is too slow, but here is the catch, if you started watching the video already you have to pay AGAIN to download the video. So make sure you test out their connection before you pay for their VOD services, my T1 line was too slow for them. I give them a meh rating as of 12/2010 but hope in the future they get their act together. They clearly rolled this out before it was ready in hopes to gain market share of the VOD services.

2. Kindle: here I give amazon a full heart, for books they are doing it right. Very seemless and easy to use. Almost magical in the way you can be reading a book within minutes.

3. books/DVDs: here again they deserve a full heart. Fast service and I do much of my xmas shopping here.

I have personally ordered from Claflin many times for office medical equipment and they have an excellent customer service department and fast and reliable shipping. They have products for both medical offices as well as products for patients such as scooters. Prices are extremely competitive and often lower than what I have found else where. They have been in business since 1817 and are one of the most well recognized medical supply companies in the healthcare sector.

  • National Association for Home Care & Hospice

11/23/10

Since 1982 the NAHC (national association for home care and hospice) is a trade association for business that provide healthcare and medical supplies to patients. While it is geared mostly for the business, it also serves as a great consumer resource as well. They have a catalog of resources they can mail to interested consumers and well as provide guidance to people who are looking for home care. Here is a link to that section of the website
http://www.nahc.org/consumer/home.html

If you are looking for a local provider they have a page for that as well

http://www.nahcagencylocator.com/

They also will give you access to their magazine called Caring, which has useful information for those people interested in home care and hospice

  • Nordic Naturals

11/20/10

There has been overwhelming evidence for people of all ages, but especially seniors to be taking some sort of omega 3 supplementation if people are not consuming it naturally through foods such as fish. People often ask which omega 3 is the best and what it really comes down to is which ones has the least amount of toxins in them. Heavy metals, dioxins, PCBs, etc all contaminate fish oil supplements. Nordic Naturals is a well respected company among physicians and often recommended as a good brand to use.

  • HealthDay

11/19/10

Healthday.com is a news site for the latest medical news for both consumers as well as physicians through their http://www.physiciansbriefing.com/ website. They syndicate their news to other sources including government websites. I like going directly to this site to get the latest evidence based healthcare news and the site is well organized by speciality. It is a great resource for consumers who have a particular concern or disease as they can sign up to receive updates on that particular concern so when there is new information available or a new study, they can read about it.

  • Vaccine Information You Need

11/19/10

Vaccination has been the subject of debate for many new parents as well as seniors who wonder if they should be getting flu and pneumonia vaccines. On the internet people can find evidence to support pretty much anything as many sites exist that will tell people to avoid vaccines because of their potential side effects. Yet at the same time, vaccines today saves lives but because people cannot tangibly see the lives being saved, it makes it more difficult to support the cause for vaccination.

This website gives solid medical information to the public regarding vaccination and is a valuable resource for people researching almost any vaccine. The have a database of photos, case histories, legit references, etc.
