  • Stanford Center on Longevity

11/24/14

The Stanford Center on Longevity is one of the best resources for both older adults as well as health care providers wanting to be on the cutting edge of longevity studies. The information is always up to date and cover a wide range of topic from brain stimulating programs to mobility and even financial problems encountered in longevity.

  • Oakworks

6/24/14

I have purchased many medical examination beds, spa beds and chairs from oakworks and all of them have lasted me for years without a problem. The quality of their materials is excellent and in many cases superior to other beds costing far more. Aesthetically I like them more than some of the traditional type of examination beds. I find it best to just call them directly and their customer service has always been excellent. The cost of their beds are typically less than what you may find from other vendors of equivalent materials.

  • Frida

2/21/14

Infants with nasal congestion have a hard time feeding and sleeping because they breathe mostly through their nose, especially when they are under 2-3 months old. The Nose Frida is one of the most amazing little devices ever invented and for a mere $15 you can clear out your baby's nose. It may seem a little disgusting at first because you are personally sucking out the snot of your baby through a tube with your mouth. The happy baby you will have afterwards is more than worth the trouble. We found that after awhile our baby got used to the Nose Frida and didn't cry as much when he got his nose sucked out. It also help to spray his nose first with saline to loosen up the mucous. Make sure to buy extra filters as we found ourselves going through them fairly rapidly.

  • MyPurMist

2/21/14

I paid about $150 for the mypuremist personal humidifier and it really did work quite well. The website also does say that the mypurmist will work with distilled water as well as their own branded water for sale on the site. I found it easier to just buy arrowhead distilled water. The only concern I had with it was the little red light did not light up when I turned it off. The mist was really warm and it did help my sinuses. I wish it was battery powered and more portable so I could take it with me. I think one of the key features of this device is that the water itself is never too hot and therefore can be used safely on children. That is a rare feature in personal steam humidifiers.

  • Exergen

2/21/14

Exergen temporal artery thermometers are the ones that physicians and nurses often use in the hospital setting to swipe a patients forehead and get an immediate temperature reading. They are great for children and infants who hate rectal thermometers. The other type of thermometers where you just place the thermometer on forehead and the temporal artery temp is not measured are not typically as accurate as this thermometer. I have one for my home and personal use and it was one of the best $30 I ever spent to help take care of my baby. It does take a little while to learn how to use it properly and they have a video you can watch to see how it is done. http://www.exergen.com//virtualclassroom/index.htm

  • Cribs for Kids

2/21/14

Cribsforkids.org is a website full of educational information on sleep safety for infants including information on how to avoid SIDS. They even sell Pack N plays for $49. Many parents think a pack n play is not as good as a "soft" crib, however many pediatricians often cite the dangers of a crib mattress that is too soft and state that a Pack N Play meets or exceeds all of the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for safe sleeping. http://www.cribsforkids.org/ask-the-pediatrician-faqs/cribsplay-yards/

They also sell a great DVD on safe sleeping that parents should watch before taking their baby home from the hospital.

  • Sharps Inc

4/29/13

Disposing of medical waste can be a very expensive process. Medical waste disposal has to be properly shipped, stored, and disposed according to a number of rules and regulations to protect against blood borne diseases. Having a local pick up of your medical waste can be expensive, but this online company called sharpsinc or sharpsinc.com has simplified the entire experience and made it much cheaper. They provide you with mail labels and the packaging material to ship off your medical waste for a fraction of the price (about 20% of what it could cost to have a local pick up). Highly recommend the website and service.

  • ThePortableCIO

5/14/12

I have used The Portable CIO for years and have always had a great experience with them. They evaluate your situation and make recommendations that are best practices and never oversell you. When working with an IT team, you want a company that has both integrity and the technical skills to get the job done, and the portable cio has consistently delivered for me. Highly recommend them. Ask to speak to Evan when you call.

  • Scribus

5/10/12

Great site for page layout and design for websites and print. Open source and FREE.

  • TaskRabbit

1/19/12

Great site for hiring just about anyone to do anything. I like their heavy lifting section to assist in getting rid of large pieces of furniture. I once just used craigslist for a junk removal service and got 2 small girls attempting to carry a couch out of my house. They couldn't do it alone so I had to help. I like how taskrabbit vets the service providers.

  • Skill share

1/11/12

Each one, Teach one, was the mantra used in my medical training years ago and basically it meant that everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn. This company skillshare.com has taken that concept and is allowing everyone to become a teacher and a student. There have been other websites and companies with similar ideas throughout the years, but this one seems to have hit a home run with their efforts and understands how to motivate people to become either a teacher or a student. Now, I just need to decide if I want to learn to become a bartender or play Settlers of Catan first...

  • Codecademy

1/11/12

Taking a class and learning something new is typically a boring process and while many people have tried to make educational games in the past, very few companies have truly succeeded in this market. Wouldn't it be great to learn to learn a new skill by playing a game? codecademy.com is making learning how to code into a gaming experience and from the nearly 100K users they have signed up, they are doing a great job. If you are looking to learn javascript, I highly recommend checking it out. Makes me think of rosetta stone for the coding world.

  • Lumineyes

11/4/11

Interesting concept where a laser which when turned to a very specific frequency can eliminate brown pigment in the eye and turn brown eyes to blue. It is similar in concept to laser hair removal, which also selectively eliminates tissue. Their website is still under development but you can watch a video of it here.

  • Newlookplumbing.us

8/2/11

I ordered a sink from New Look Plumbing through amazon.com and needed to make a return. While I did have to pay for return shipping, they did refund my credit card and the return process went very smoothly. I commend them for having such great customer service and providing an expedited refund to my credit card. One of hallmarks of a great company is how they deal with returns and this company I feel did a remarkable job.

ZAM
  • ZAM

6/8/11

I have been following and using the zam network of sites for the past 10 years and they are a valuable resource for any MMO gamer. Their sites include Wowhead, Thottbot, and MMOUI. Each of their sites is a respectably run entity where they carefully monitor both spam and advertisements. Content is always original and the community in the forums is always helpful. If you are playing any of the MMOs out there including WOW or Rift you should check out this website and their network of sites.

  • Thehpvtest

5/13/11

Great site for basic information on the HPV test for women and explaining the relationship between HPV testing and PAP smears. Everyone should know about these types of tests and especially women who are sexually active and might be interested in the HPV vaccine. I would also recommend going to the CDC for information on guidelines on when to get the HPV test done. Links here

  • Minecraft

5/2/11

I recently read a review about Minecraft which you can get from minecraft.net. I had seen several people on sitejabber review Lego or block type of games and never really understood what the hype was all about. Here is a link to the IGN video: Minecraft: I don't get it. http://pc.ign.com/articles/116/*******p1.html
If you ever played with legos in your childhood, you owe it to yourself to watch this video and see if it is worth a quick download to relive the lego days. Parents with children who play with lego should also take a look at the video and see if it might appeal to your children.

The best part seems to be that people can share their minecraft/lego creations with each other. This guy created a Call of Duty FPS in the minecraft world.
http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/01/31/minecraft-black-ops-nuketown-remake-tehtoolebox

Great indie game that deserves a full heart for managing to amass such a following (700,000 facebook likes to date) in an era of big budget gaming.

  • SuperBiiz

It has been a long time since I built my own pc but I do remember it being significantly cheaper than buying online. Currently when you configure your system through a major company you are seemingly paying much more than if you just bought it off the shelf. This company is located around the corner from where I grew up and has a real address/phone etc which is rare these days for internet companies. I took a look at their prices and they were far below what is currently being sold at retail for the same specifications. If you are looking to buy a new computer, I would recommend seeing what your money will get you at a larger internet retailer such as Dell, gateway, sony, HP and then compare the specs to what you can get here. You might be able get some significant upgrades for not much more money. Often times upgrading a HD will cost you hundreds extra... here an upgrade to 1.5TB cost an additional $26 from what I saw... Just try finding that deal on other more commercial sites.

  • Voice123

4/21/11

This website is like a search engine for voice over talent and it does attract some great voice over artists. You can hear samples of their work online and get quotes for projects fairly easily. If you are looking exclusively for voice over work, I think going to sites like this is better than some of the sites that have a combination of acting/voice overs.
