  • Geni

Geni doesn't protect its users' privacy - it will broadcast your family on Google - I created a family tree on Geni thinking it would be neat to share with my family, but Geni published it online. Now it shows my entire family tree on Google, and there is no way to turn it off or delete it.

Geni is trying to make money off your family information and they do not respect your privacy. Don't let them do it.

New torrent search engine. But what makes it better? - I currently use www.torrentz.com to find music and files to download. It works pretty well. Honestly, I'm not sure what Speckly's angle is. Check out the results pages for Radiohead:

http://www.torrentz.com/search?q=radiohead
http://www.speckly.com/s?q=Radiohead&f=exact

Speckly, I don't get it. Why are you better?

  • Mr. Skin

7/12/08

Mr. Skin - useful for finding naked girls when watching on demand cable - I've never used the pay version of Mr. Skin which includes naked celeb pics and movies (anyone with a password pls PM me!), but the free service gives the precise time of nudity in movies. This is particularly great when I'm watching On Demand cable. I look up the movie on Mr. Skin and then fast forward my movies to the good parts. Thank you Mr. Skin... you have saved me countless hours of watching $#*!ty romantic comedies just to see 3 seconds of Marisa Tomei's boobies.

  • Facebook

6/12/08

Facebook good for posting cheap job listings (if you belong to the right networks) - If you want to post jobs online, you could use LinkedIn, Craigslist, Monster, and any number of more specialized job boards. They typically cost $75 and up if they are any good. On Facebook, however, you can spam your networks (school, city, etc.) basically for free.

  • GoDaddy

6/9/08

Don't use the domain buying service - I wanted to buy a domain that someone else owned, so I sucked it up and paid GoDaddy $60 to negotiate a purchase. Firstly, using the domain buying service is really tricky. They send you to some other website where you have to get a new log in (can't use your normal GoDaddy one), and it's impossible to navigate. GoDaddy also tried to sell you like 100 other products in the process.

So I finally get the process going - GoDaddy then "appraises" the domain you're trying to buy (it seems arbitrary, but they say it's based on the length, popularity, etc.) and then you decide how much you want to offer and then GoDaddy is supposed to contact the website owner and negotiate the purchase.

I took GoDaddy's advice and had them offer the website owner the appraisal amount. But then GoDaddy spent and entire month trying to contact the website owner and NOTHING. No response. $60 completely wasted.

The worst part is, I decided I would try to email the website owner myself. Sure enough the guy gets right back to me and said he thought the GoDaddy offer was just SPAM. So I would advise anyone considering the GoDaddy domain buying service to avoid using it. And if you must, it's probably worth trying to contact the website yourself before wasting your money with GoDaddy.

  • Zivity

Good quality artistic (sexy) naked pictures (and I've got some beta invites) - Zivity is a collection of sexy naked and half-naked pictures of attractive women. The picture quality is good, but they are still in beta so there is not a ton of content. The site is trying to mesh web 2.0 style and features with soft-core porn - not sure if that really works (why do I want to be "friends" with these people?) and the site is a little hard to navigate. But it is worth checking out for the pics. I've got some beta invites if people need them - just PM me.

Underrated SEO blog out of the UK - BlogStorm contains a lot of very practical SEO information for website owners. For example, he recent wrote a great post on how to take advantage of Google's Query Deserves Freshness model: http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/using-google-query-deserves-freshness-model/

  • Stuntdubl

Todd Malicoat is an SEO stud - Todd really gets SEO, and is a funny dude on top of that. If you need someone who is an A+ to improve your site's traffic, I would consider Todd Malicoat near the top of any list. Other A listers would have to include:

Rand Fishkin at www.seomoz.org
Aaron Matthew Wall at www.seobook.com
Barry Schwartz at www.seoroundtable.com
Matt Cutts at www.mattcutts.com

Am I missing anyone?

This site's got to be a hoax... but she's so hot! - I have no idea how to prove I have been defending net neutrality, but this girl promises to sleep with whomever can convince ISPs that it's a bad idea to preferentially allocate bandwidth... terms include:

"# condom must be used, except if the applicant prefers to release his semen upon Tania's body without any oral or vaginal contact
# Anal sex is negotiable, although Tania will cease the performance immediately if any form of 'surprise buttsex' occurs

Awesome. Love the faux broken English.

  • Hulu

4/21/08

Awesome free site for watching shows and clips from NBC and FOX - This site is f*cking great. You can watch full episodes for free of Arrested Development, SNL, Family Guy, 30 Rock, and tons of other shows and clips. The site is clean, fast and the videos are high quality. There are some ads before shows, but they're not bad.

  • Witch's Rock Surf Camp

4/21/08

Sweet surf camp in Costa Rica - I went here last year, and it was awesome. I suck at surfing, but I got a lot better after I spent a week here with a few of my friends. Everyone is super laid back, the instructors are good, and waves are awesome (there are good spots for beginners and more advanced surfers). You also meet a lot of other cool people from all over... all in, Witches Rock is a great experience I would recommend to anyone.

Side note: Costa Rica is a great country... very friendly people, easy to get around, but just rugged enough you feel like you're on an adventure.

  • Synonym

4/16/08

Crappy site can't even give you synonyms - You would think that a site called synonyms.com would at the very least give you decent synonyms. But no. This site sucks -- I was looking for a synonym for "explorer" -- pretty simple word. What do I get? Nothing. But then I go to http://vancouver-webpages.com/synonyms.html -- some ghetto-$#*! Canadian open source thesaurus and bingo -- 5 synonyms! Sites like synonym.com make me mad because they are the #1 Google search result --come on Google, give me better results!

Jeremy Grantham provides thoughful commentary on markets - GMO is Jeremy Grantham's $152 billion asset management vehicle. While the fund has had mixed results in recent years https :// www.gmo. Com/America/CMSAttachmentDownload. Aspx? Target=JUBRxi51IID4jPJK9qdDlbdL2Y3GnEUlc9EtDr5X83kpvYKRBXl08KSXamjFWDrbKh2MtHAAE%2bM%2btDnAZlU8q2BB7p86ep%2fC, Grantham has earned the reputation of one of the world's top money managers. He has also been credited with starting the trend of timber investing that has provided billions in high uncorrelated returns for the Harvard and Yale Endowments, among others.

Recently, Grantham predicted the market's decline (although he had been saying it for years and by his own admission didn't really make much money off of it) and usually has thoughtful opions on the state of markets and the economy. You can read his letters and articles for free here:

  • The Hype Machine

2/20/08

Good for listening to full length songs without downloading, but hard to find good new music - Hype Machine aggregates music blogs. Maybe I'm not using the site properly. But personally, I find Hype Machine a bit too noisy and hard to separate the good from the bad (blogs and songs) so I don't use it to discover new music. If someone has some tips on how to use the site better, I'd be interested to hear them.

However, I do use Hype Machine to search for specific songs or artists I want to listen to, because you're able to listen to songs in their entirety on the site, which is often better than downloading or using some paid service. It's also possible to find some live tracks which aren't widely available.

Great selection of Genesis games you can play in your browser - This site has almost every Genesis game, all available to play in your browser. It also has a ton of Nintendo games (with save support) as well as a bunch of other pirated $#*! like movies. Great site to waste time on.

  • Nintendo8

Play sweet old-school Nintendo games in your browser - Sitting at work and got a hankering for some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action? Wait no longer. No need to download anything--you can play these great 8 bit games right in your browser. Booyah.

  • Friendster

12/15/07

Friendster mostly porn - I've had my Friendster account for 3 years. I have 112 friends from childhood, high school and college. However, the only messages I ever get are porn advertisements and random notes (I think uR CUTE) from girls in Manila with frighteningly provocative profile pictures. Friendster owned social networking. How far they have fallen.

  • Bebo

12/15/07

Why would anyone use Bebo? - Unless you are British, I am unclear why anyone would use Bebo. In the long-run, I feel like there is zero room for any generalist social networks with perhaps the exception of My Space and Facebook. Can anyone fill me into as to why Bebo will be around in the future?

  • PrintCountry

12/13/07

Good prices and service for printer ink - I ordered a really cheap refurbished printer cartridge from these guys, but when I got it, it didn't work. However, I called them and without any fuss, they overnighted me another printer cartridge that worked fine. Overall--good value and excellent service.
