“Mysterious players”

I started a multiple player game on this site. As I reviewed the status, I was pleased to see the final joiner... until that joiner disappeared. WTF... A new player joined and beat me. It made me question the fairness of this site. I had seen this before but questioned my memory. Now that it's happened again, I smell a rat.
