In the case of type 2 diabetes, there is resistance of the tissues to insulin and decreased response to glucose by the pancreas. The circulating endogenous insulin is sufficient to prevent ketosis. There is often excessive insulin secretion and excessive activity of the beta cells in the pancreas.

Diabetes is a very widespread metabolic disorder. Studies have estimated that in 2003 there were 194 million people infected with the disease worldwide and according to several estimations the number will reach 330 million by 2025.
